 Subject: cams+headers
 Advice needed:
I recently upsized from stock size tires to 31x10.5 Pirelli Scorpions AT's.
With the change in tire size my 89 4runner, 22RE, 5spd, seems even more
sluggish than before. I have Moses Ludel's "Toyota Owners Bible" and in it
he says the place to start any power upgrades to the 4 cyl. is with a
 camshaft.
Now, I know that the best thing to do would be to change R+P ratios, but
changing the cam is got to be WAY cheaper.
So my question is: Anyone out there using an aftermarket cam that is
designed to give more low end torque? Would installing a header be of any
help, or would this tend to only help top end?
In talking to guys at the local Toyota dealership, they weren't much help.
The closest "off-road" shop to me is in Vancouver. (North Shore off road) I
had them send me a catalogue which turned out to be a Dick Cepek.
 Thanks pending,

I belive the Rocky engine is an OLD Toyota design, not the newer ones.
Or at lest it used to be that way around.
I have a 2L-T engine in my toy, and it was suposed to go to Canada.
Those engines have no problems as far as I know of. The Turbine need
rebuilding every 150.000 km. From oz I've head they had few droping
 valves or something like that...
I say, those babes have just as relianble drivetrain as the LC, but like
other Hiluxes the body ain't as strong. The Diesels are also a bit
heavier, and without a Turbo they are lasy.

Hi All, my 1989 4runner has a loud knocking from the front drive
shafts (I assume!) when manoevering on full left lock. The guy I
bought the truck from (2 months ago) said it was just that they
needed greasing -- Is this true or do I need to get something
replaced? I've had a look for grease points and can't see anything.
I can avoid it making the noise by using just slightly less than full
lock, so its not a big problem, but is something gonna break soon?
The truck has done about 85k miles and I don't think its had a
 particularly hard life.
 Any input appreciated.

On my '92 4R, I'm having trouble getting the rear window to raise when
it's cold. It will lower just fine, every time, whether I use the key
or rocker switch. It just won't go up, no matter which switch I use.
And it works fine each and every time when the weather is warm.
Any ideas on what might be causing this? I suspect there's a relay or
something that's sticking when it's cold. Also, anybody got any ideas

Yep, them damn heep and heepers Jamboree is closing the rubicon trail
during our planned trip. I guess there will be so many broken down Jeeps
littering the trail that they need to close it to remove all the broken
 parts!
As you may know about 25 people on the list were planning to run the
Rubicon trail July 30-Aug1, now wee need to choose a new trip date or
crash there little party, I hope to find a date that everyone can make.
The Rubicon will be closed July 23-26, July 31-Aug 2, Aug 7-9, Aug
 21-23.
Personally I think this is a big crock of S***, closing the trail fly's
in the face of the freedom we 4Wheelers live for!
What next a 4 lane highway with stoplights through the Rubicon so they
 can run tour buss's through?
 Some possible dates are:
July 2-4 This will be a busy time with lots of traffic, and backing up
 to let others past.
July 9-11 I went this time last year and there was very little
 traffic.
July 23-25 This could be a goo time
July 26-28 This is close to the same time we were planning, but just
 before the Jamborees
 Other dates?
It would be better to go before the Jamboree come to town as they will
have lots of stock jeeps and will be paving the trails with rocks so the
stockers will make it with out a scratch.
Thanks to Darrell Creeks for noticing the conflict.
Please reply with what dates will or will not work for you, I will sort
through the responses and post the results.

have kits for the samuri's. Lift and so forth.

My father just bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee with all options last year. I
asked him if it was a left over 1996 model or a 1997 model. He didn't know
;-). I had to check the invoice to make sure it was 1997.

 Well,
I've spent the last 3.5 days scrambling to get a 1975 IH scout ready
for the local 'tuff-truck' competition (it's at Kemper for those of you near
KC) I've gotten the cage together, the thing stripped, tuned up and
generally Ok shape (it's a brown, rusty rolling doo-doo ;-)
Well in talking to a couple of people the weak links are the spring
mounts (shackles really need to be reversed) and the front axles - I'm
building a truss, and need to weld it to the cast center of the Dana 44 front
end. any welding tips for cast?? What kind of rod do I need to use? What
kind of current? (I have a small MIG and access to a 220 amp?? 'stick'
welder) I know there are a couple of you that weld a lot that hopefully
 answer this....
I'm hoping I can get it to hold together long enough to finish the
weekend! Should make for some good video or pics on the old web page (if I
can talk them in to letting me film/take pics - darn rules...)
Only reason this isn't a toy is that I couldn't bare to thrash one,
and the scout was a friends that was free!

Brian,go to your local library, and get a book on welding. This would be a
lot easier than typing it out.You will need to preheat the housing with
a tiger torch, and post heat/stress relieve it.If you could get away
without welding to the cast housing,it would be a lot easier.Mig welding
it is out of the question.Try making a bracket that runs off the cover.
D44 covers are usually very thick and would standup better with a good
weld, than a housing would with a poor weld.If the tie-rod and drag link
are in the way, build a box all the way around them,or whatever is
appropriate.Or you could drill the housing and bolt it(in a pinch).
If the truss is mild steel and the housing is cast,it is best to lay a
few beads(with preheat at 200*) with small diameter(3/32")NI-CI
electrode, then weld over top of those with the final welds to be
 done(with 1/8" E7018).
This controls how much carbon will be transferred into the weld, and you
have a better chance of a succesful weld with less chance of cracking.
Hope this helps.Check the book though.
