 To: toy4x4@tlca.org
I got a call from South Coast Toyota (Costa Mesa, CA) last night about
the headgasket recall. They said they would replace the headgasket
and give me a rental car....all paid for. They also mentioned that
the work would take about day and a half (about a 12 hour job).
I mentioned that I only had 72,000 miles and I had no problems now.
They said that Toyota is going to be changing the policy of paying for
everything (work, rental car, etc.) very soon and that I should have
 it done now.
 Does this sound right?
I saw Jim Brink's recent post about what else to have them do. I just
had the water pump and thermostat replaced with the timing belt. I
will have them do the camshaft and crank seals and the timing belt
 tensioner.
Also, I'm running Mobil 1. Is it OK to run synthetic with the brand
new head gasket or should I run conventional oil for a while?
 Thanks,
 -tom

thanks everyone for the advice on the srpings
I went with Downey 2" springs (i know they suck but I had to do
something ) just because I have no time before I leave for Rhode
 Island winter treking
Anyway has anybody dealt with replacing the track(s) for the rear
 window ?
I went to put down the window and I look back to see half the window
hanging down sideways. Further investigation revealed that the right
 track has rusted into non-existance.
In the shop manual I see two tracks that attach to the window, are
 these replaceable ?
Is it a easy job ?
 thanx

The shackle is fine and works good you will probably need to use shims in front get get the pinion up but it's no biggie. My only problem was the Soft ride springs have a short second
leaf ; with the 3" shackle it caused the main leaf to kink slightly where the second leaf ended. I got a pair of Toy rear springs from the junkyard last weekend and am planning on using a leaf inserting into the soft ride spring pack, I'm hopeful that this will cure the problem for now.
I never took out the overload leaf with the soft rides. I'm guessing that if I had my springs would never had kinked at all but would probably have sagged a lot quicker.
 Hope this helps

I will be going down the Freeway and my engine will quit (V-6, 5-speed, no mods to the engine other then a drop-in K&N filter). Does not give me any warning. I coast along for a while and it will start back up. The check engine light does not come on, all of the gages are still working, tach, electric oil pressure, fuel and temp. It only seems to do it when I am going about 55 to 65 MPH. and the tach is reading 2900 to 3200 RPM ( I have 4:88 gears with 31" tires).
I have checked all the obvious things (wires loose, ground connections are good, checked the computer-no codes).Does anyone out there have any ideas? What to look at, what to check.

Go to synthetics like Mobil 1.
I would also recomend Millitec additive. The only additive I would ever
add to andy olie. It works.
Fill up to, or close to, the fill-hole. Between 2 and 3 liters for the
diffs if I remeber right (but If I where you I wouldn't depend on it...)

All the capacities are in your owner's guide. Off the top of my head, I
seem to recall 2.3 qts for the rear pumpkin and 1.7 for the front.

I didn't read the whole thread - but isn't it just obvious that you take
the capacity of the tank, and when the light comes on, fill it up and
subtract the amount it took to fill? Some of the questions people post on
the various boards crack me up... "Sure, its on the owner's manual, but I
don't want to take the cellophane off of it - I'd rather bother y'all" :)

 Should be 4.10
Look for a metal plate on either the engine firewall or
inside the driver's side door jamb. There will be a long
number like the VIN # you provided, there should be a line
in there that reads G292. That would indicate an 8" ring
gear, 4.10 axle ratio, and a 2 pinion case. Let me know
 if it reads anything different.

The chart for japanese-built rigs has so far been absolutely accurate.
I've gotten a few conflicting reports about the chart for US-built
vehicles like yours, but if you have the normal 225/75 tires and a
standard tranny you're almost certainly 4.10.

Its gonna be something different. His VIN began with a "4T" meaning its a
US-built vehicle; wich uses a different set of codes :( "JT" is for
 japanese built rigs.

Had truck in for water pump replacemet, shop gave me some other things
and quotes to fix. Looking for ideas, or suggestions from the list about
 your experiences..
 1. Right rear gas shock is leaking. I currently have Monroe Magnum Plus
Road sensors, worked good for my occasional off-road use. Shop gave me a
quote for replacements: Gas Ryder w/VST 40.95 each. Not sure what type
of shock this is, anyone know?? I think I can replace the shocks for
the entire truck myself, seems pretty straight forward. I am looking for
advice on replacements, someone mentioned Bilsteins, are there others
 comparable to the Monroe's. I don't do a lot of off-roading, so I don't
 need anything hardcore.
 2. Master Cylinder is leaking. Shop quote of 200.00 for replacement, not
including labor. Does anyone know what a Toyota Master Cylinder costs? I
would like to replace this myself also. I read the Cliton's manual, and
it seems pretty straight forward, but I know with alot of things in the
world, there is the between the lines reading. If I following the book,
and replace master cylinder and bleed brake system, what other things do
I have to look for or do that they do not mention in the manual???
 Thanks

I don't have it for the Toy, but got it for my VW Bug MANY years ago (I
think the bug was the first Idiot's Guide book out). I found it to be TOO
simple for me. I'm rather mechanically inclined and the really hard stuff
was listed as basically "take it to the shop." I ended up using the
official Volkswagen service book for years.
As for Toys, I just priced the 2 volume offical service books for my truck
and will try to buy them asap. While I don't have shop space to pull an
engine or tranny, the official guide will undoubtedly help in many areas.
They're a bit more expensive than my VW days (uh, what isn't? My bug was
under $2K NEW....the soon to be released new version VW Bug will start at
$15K!). About $75 per book for the Toy.

I don't think I'll pick up the Owens book then - I've got chiltons,
Ludel's book, AND the factory manual. I was just curious about the Owen's
book, since its nice to learn new way to do things, but it sounds a little
 simplistic for my purposes.

We found a yard with 2 different 4.3L engines. They wanted $450 for one
(needed to be checked out, but included EFI intake), the other was $500 -
pulled with 40k in good shape .>>We are planning on skipping the adapter stuff and just using 700R4 or T350>>with 203 (I think) X-fer case. Anything other than making whole new>>crossmember? Actually, the 203 was a blurb on my part - we will stay away from the full
 time case.
Speedo? Who needs a speedo? This may end up a trailer/trail only vehicle.>>Any thoughts on this or any other tips? like I said, we are trying to> avoid>>the $$$$$$ adapters.>> Figure your complete cost carefully. It won't be cheap. Also consider> your $$ savings avoiding the adapter vs. the other implications> of doing the 203 or similar setup. I'll be glad to answer other> specific questions you may have.
As to cost, we already have lots of parts laying around. I think we have a
4.3 somewhere from a van, & it has a 4 bbl carb & intake on it. We have a
coulpe of 350 trannys, and I think we have a T350 & 205 already hooked
together. I know we will be giving up the Marlin, but around here a marlin is
 not the most important mod.
Our main idea is to put this together with as little money as possible, using
what we have on hand. I will get back to you Jay off the list for some more
 info.
 Thanks!

I had a similar thing happen to me. Wrong lights would come on in the rear when I pressed the brakes or turn signal. After I got a $100 ticket (No rear lights, no mudflaps, "unapproved" rear bumper and I was COMPLTETELY covered in mud, with small view holes wiped out on the windows- no points though! Cops seem to like my German Shepherd co-pilot) I finally took it to the car wash, hosed out under the bed, and found a bundle of wires had gotten rubbed to the point that some wires were missing insulation and
cross-shorting each other. Seperated them, wrapped em with tape, wrapped the whole bundle with a LOT of tape and tied everything up and as out of the way as possible. They've worked fine ever since!
