From: Todd Johansson Subject: 3.0 H/G and some front end problems
To: Toyota 4x4 Mail listings Two questions for anyone out there. A friend of mine has a '92 Toyota PU
with the 3.0 V6. His headgasket is going out and a local dea;ership told
him that his engine was covered under the recall. Is that true? I didn't
know the 3.0 was covered also.
Next, my problem. I have a '84 PU. I have been getting a pretty bad
shimmy from the front end. It only happens at around 45mph. Anyhting
over that and it's gone. I have also started noticing my steering getting
really sensitive. At slow speeds you can crank the wheel and the truck
barely turns. But at freeway speeds, any little movment of the steering
wheel makes the truck want to do a u-turn. All suspension is stock. I am
planning on replacing the bicycle air pump Toyota calls a steering
stabilizer soon. Can the steering box be adjusted? I have not been able
to find the bolt/screw. Any help would be great. Thanks!

 To: "Toy4x4@tlca.org" I've got an 89 22re Extra Cab with 31 BFG's. I have been running 4.10's
with my 31 BFG's for about 6 months. My rear diff decided to go so I
decided to go ahead and install 4.56's (yes, in both ends thank you) and
I love it. I commute about 1000 miles a week in my Toy and I never
realized what a DOG it was before. Now I can pull the big hills on the
highway without downshifting and losing speed. My gas mileage has
improved slightly as well ,which defies traditional logic. The mileage
is still poor but, that is probably a separate issue. Check engine
light, code 25 (lean) and code 26 (rich). O2 sensor??
I have officially joined the side of "you do not NEED to regear with
31's but, you will be very happy if you do".

 To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" Here's the story:
 1. 88 4Runner 4cyl 130,000 miles
 2. Had belts changed, and oil changed
 3. 2 weeks later, leaking radiator fluid
 4. noticed oil level a bit lower than full level - will monitor
 5. water pump went bad, belt change might have helped failure occur
sooner. (shop said that pump looked like original - love those toyota
 parts).
 6. after water pump fixed, new thermostat, and new radiator fluid,
 checked oil level,
much lower than a few days ago (took 1 quart to get it back to
 correct level).
 7. I am going to monitor for a couple of weeks.
Any suggestions about why the level would go down so much, could this be
from the work the shop did with the water pump, or am I burning oil?
What causes oil to burn??? ( age of vehicle, etc)
Thanks for the help in advance...

Is your vehicle an automatic or manual?
Also, is it a truck or 4Runner?
I thought that since 4Runners are "lighter duty" than the trucks
because of the lower payload and lower towing capacities, that
the possibility exists that the turbo trucks have the 4 pinion
axle while the turbo 4Runners have the 2 pinion. Just a guess.

To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" You have to consider the cost for changing the computer and wiring since
they are completely different than the V6 engine. Go with 3.4 instead since
you might get the engine cheaper (not much replacement demand yet)
I think ATK sells a complete replacement Turbo engine and it does not cost
much more than standard 22RE. You don't have to refund the core to this
company and they will deliver for $100. You got to use the original fuel
 induction though.

No, it doesn't sound right. (The ones I have done fire right up...). If
the mechanic failed to connect connectors to the cold-start injector or
time switch, this would be a possible cause. Other reasons could be:
 Loose air intake hose
 Incorrect valve timing
 Loose fuel lines (gasoline smell)
Loose intake manifold bolts (also poor idling)
Bad or loose connection at the battery
Bad or loose connection at the airflow meter
Give the mechanic a break. With the number of HG jobs some of the
dealers are performing, a mistake is bound to happen.

My '88 130k mi 4 Runner started having a slight vibration up at 75 MPH+
(mostly under power, not as bad w/o). Wheels have been rebalanced twice -
I wanted a second opinion and found out the first time they installed a bit
too much weight. I've recently replaced the u-joints due to the infamous
clunk - that's gone. But now the vibration is worse. I'm thinking of
doing these steps to get it back to smooth (testing after each to see if
 there's a fix):
1> take the driveshaft off again, have it balanced (age + new joints = out
 of balance?)
2> replace my outer bearings in the rear - they're starting to sound rough
(with 31's, I have no doubt that they could be getting dry & worn).
3> replace the transmission mount - new padding down there can help.
 .. getting wilder..
4> replace the pilot bearing on the differential - could be worn, possibly
rebuild the differential - replace the inner bearings as well (?). This
seems extreme though since oil's changed every year or more.
Any other things I could consider?
 thanks, scott

I have had a problem like you describe since the day I bought my truck.
After 2 years and having the tires balanced at 4 different shops I found
that one of the wheels was bent (more than the rest ) I put new american
wheels on and my vibration is gone. All the balance machines would
balance the tires fine and not give any indication of a problem but the
last time I went in to get tires the guy balancing said hey look at
this, the wheel goes up and down on the balancer, you must have a bent
rim here! Look at your wheels.

 Yes....
You just simply shell out $1600.00 for gears and lockers like I just did last
week and wah lah, the speedo is right where it should be:-)
Actually I think you can just change the plastic gear in the transfer case but,
my approach was much more exciting yet somehow very painful $$$$.

stock springs I'll bet they are getting tired, especially with a 4 Runner and all that extra weight in the rear. I have
found stock rear Toy springs to be very soft even when new and prone to wrap. When they they get tired they will wrap even
 more!
Start with a tired Toy rear spring ( or some aftermarket units, my Downey units lasted exactly 3 months.) add say a rear
brake drum that is barely rubbing throw in some speed the you get a jiggling rear end, WALA there you have it a stuttering
 sensation..
I had much the same problem with my 83 lot's of bucking when under acceleration but not any during take off or slow stuff.
I solved it by making some 6 leaf packs out of various springs around the garage then rebuilding my rear brakes cleared it
 right up.
As an experiment have a buddy drive your truck at a speed where this is happening then follow him and watch the rear axle
see if it seems to be doing any kind of a dance, I actually had someone follow a friend of mine in my truck and video taped
it so I could zoom in. I bet you'll be amazed at how much it will wrap under acceleration try to get up beside it where you
can watch the pinion that is where movement will be most noticeable.
 Ramblings :)

It was the + cable. The lousy techs at Steven's Creek Toyota didn't
screw it down tight. I found the loose wing nut today.

From: "Craig Blanchette" Subject: V6 or V8 in an '80 Toy
To: Five friends and I have all done the V8 conversion, some using advance
adaptors, others using chevy transfercase. The swap is very easy as long as
you make sure everything lines up and is mounted where you want. Most of us
went with the V8 instead of the V6 because of cost. V8's are very cheap to
buy and fix. While being overkill in the power department. Two of my friends
went the advance adaptor route. Spending huge amounts of money. While making
the initial install easier, both trucks have over heating problems and are
wearing out the transfercase. One went with the bellhousing route and blows
tranny's all the time. The trucks that are all chevy with no advanced
adaptors at all (4 trucks including mine) haven't had any problems
whatsoever. All use camaro or landcruser V8 conversion rads, 4 have manual
fans and one uses electric's only. two have 4 speed manual tranny's, 2 have
 turbo 350's. 3 are using 205 transfercase's and mine uses a rockwell 2.5 ton
military transfercase. All the trucks are keeping ujoints and 3rd members
just fine. Tranny crossmember must be custom made to clear front
driveshafts. Either by modifying a toy crossmember or making a new one all
 together. Hope this helps

C'mon David....you KNOW the answer to that......
 Which is cheaper?
Depends a lot on the cost of your engine and how much you
wanna saw away and how big a hammer you have.....Engine cost
will probably be the biggest factor overall.>4.3 or Buick?
The Buick will probably be a little cheaper depending on
what you can actually find. The Buick is a little easier
to install due to the smaller overall width.>We are planning on skipping the adapter stuff and just using 700R4 or T350>with 203 (I think) X-fer case. Anything other than making whole new>crossmember? (I know new drive shafts)
That'll work if the front driveshaft output is on the right side.....
I don't know much about the 203. You will sacrifice the possibility
of using a Marlin. You may not have to scrap the driveshafts
completely.....maybe just change the ends as needed. You'll need
to come up with a speedo drive.>Any thoughts on this or any other tips? like I said, we are trying to avoid>the $$$$$$ adapters.
Figure your complete cost carefully. It won't be cheap. Also consider
your $$ savings avoiding the adapter vs. the other implications
of doing the 203 or similar setup. I'll be glad to answer other
 specific questions you may have.

V6 is a much nicer fit with less mods, plus I have seen a few use the stock exhaust manifolds with the Buick swaps.> Which is cheaper?
Can't get cheaper than a 350, although after watching many V8 toys run down here in Fla I can tell you the truck becomes way
nose heavy and tends to dig in while 4 poppers kinda float over the goo.> 4.3 or Buick?> I looked for 4.3's for a while found a few, some shot the good ones always cost too much. A good rebuild of a 4.3 I believe
will cost you a bit more than a 231. On the other hand I found a plethora of late 80's Buick cars complete and running for
what some wanted for a decent 4.3.I think the 4.3 has the performance advantage out of the box but with a little coaxing the
Buicks can make "I believe" more than enough power for a Toy; Toy axles are tuff but a 350 will bust stuff for sure if you do
any kind of pedal to the floor wheeling. You can get a Buick 231 to GM 700R or TH350 adapter for about 150.00 bucks from
Downey or Advance, not too hard to find a GM tranny and transfer and 231's are way common ( something to contemplate, you might
spend less getting the Buick motor with GM tranny Transfer combo and buying the adapter).
Dunno if you can somehow hook up a Buick TH350 to a GM transfer. I have seen a few V8 Toys and can tell you they are awesome
but I live in Flat Swamp land with only mud and sand to deal with. I really think that a V8 version in say a Tellico-esk type
area would be asking for some breakage.> We are planning on skipping the adapter stuff and just using 700R4 or T350> with 203 (I think) X-fer case.
60 bucks for a part-time kit for a 203 a nice item to have.> Anything other than making whole new> crossmember? (I know new drive shafts)> I have an old Toy drive shaft that the guy had a GM style end welded on the axle side, better than a whole new one.> Any thoughts on this or any other tips? like I said, we are trying to avoid> the $$$$$$ adapters.> thanks
HEI ignition cheap and simple. I think the 6 will be much easier to cool and keep you from having to bang or cut a lot of sheet
metal.btw did you get the pic?

From: jen and chris keeling Subject: wood beds
 To: toy4x4@tlca.org
This is in reply to Pete's question about the wood beds. I built one on
my 1987 Std cab truck without too much difficulty. I did my mine pretty
much all by scratch since I had no real idea how to do it. I'm
currently in the process of "planning" how I'm going to rebuild it in
the near future (have to get another car running first before the truck
can sit). Some helpful hints to make the job easier:
 - - Try to use the stock t/l lens if possible (I didn't...wiring ordeal
is easier if you use the stock lens/connectors)
 - - With the bed off, you have much easier access to the fuel
filter/fuel tank...good time to replace the filter.
 - - I used 3" blocks from my body lift so the bed floor would be higher
& more space between the tire.
Oh, and don't forget about all the redneck, termite and "Do you have
your Home Depot receipts for the ins. company " jokes you'll soon be
 hearing!
