I just blown the headgasket (97 4Runner Limited 4WD) after driving
23000 mi. Sent it to the dealer to get it fixed. It's going
to take 3 days.
The funny thing is that I asked them 3 months ago if the new 3.4 L V6
would have the same problem as the 3.0L V6's, and they told me "No"

We've hashed the pros and cons out in this forum a few times - check the
archives. In short, the auto is great, though it does eat a few horses
from an already under-powered rig. Its the same tranny they use in Jeep
Cherokees I believe. I'm pleased with mine - 155K so far, no problems at
all.

playing in a sand pit down by the river (next to the man living in his van).
Actually what happened was the outlet pipe from the rear of the muffler came
out. Seems it was rather small too. That contributed to the ffffffffft sound
when accellerating. I may just reweld it but I'm thinking about a new
muffler if the price is right and rewelding isn't practical. So all you
folks who've figured out the best muffler, let us know. Dynomax seems to be
winning the bang for the buck war. Any reason to install a stainless Borla
besides it's longevity?

To: Toyota 4x4 mailing list With all this talk about 4 Wheel Parts, I'll add this....
Maybe I'm better off having a major store of theirs right near by...I
haven't had much trouble, and the guys are pretty friendly to deal with.
When I got my low profile bump stops, though I ended up going back 3 times.
They had one pair in stock, but I needed two more. They ordered them and
the next time I was in they didn't know where the order was, but had one
more pair on the shelf. I got those, and when I came back next time they
had found my original order buried under a bunch of stuff, so I finally got
the last set. No big deal, but 3 trips for such little parts was crazy. Oh,
and I also rescheduled (3 or 4 times) a CB antenna modification they were
going to do for me...guys were sick, they were too busy, etc etc....finally
rather than a verbal "just bring it in tomorrow" I had them pit me on the
schedule and we got it done. Again, this was basically a little job, and I
suppose they were more tied up doing major mods for guys.
As for guys who've ordered stuff and been charged while it's backorded, I
think they should change that policy. I've dealt with companies
(non-wheelin' stuff) that don't charge till they ship!!
Meanwhile,
Terry Johnson will provide the official write up, but let me say the recent
trip to Death Valley was awesome! For a newbie like myself, I held my own
in Surprise Canyon (with a little spotting...thanks, guys!), and the rest
of the trails we hit were no problem. Having lunch at Barker Ranch, where
Charles Manson was captured, was cool....

It's not the timing belt, when it goes the engine will shutoff, or if it
slips the engine will run bad until it's fixed. It sould like you have a
tranny problem, take it to a shop and have them drop the pan, change the
filter and fluid.

From: Cartman Subject: HG & Free Rental Car
To: Toyota4x4Digest I have a question to all that have had their Headgasket's replaced and
were supplied with a free rental car.
Did you have a problem with the amount of money Toyota would pay per day
for a rent-a-car? I had a car for 10 days and the bill came to $330.05.
Toyota would only pay $285.46... Supposedly, there's a cap on
rent-a-car's or something.
I talked to the dealership that did mine and they said that Toyota put a
cap on how much they would pay per day. So after many calls to the
dealership, I got sick of talking to them and went ahead and called
Customer Service in CA. They said that Toyota doesn't provide rentals at
all and must have footed the bill partly because of the HG.
Something I'm failing to understand is... the dealership never said
anything about a cap on the rent-a-car but said they would pay for it, and
then Toyota (USA) says that they don't even reimburse for rental cars -
???
Somebody please make some sense outta this.... I already spent like $900+
on the truck when it was in the shop getting the HG replaced for free, and
this extra $45 isn't just pocket change, ya know?
It's more of the principle of the thing. First they tell me they'll pay
for it, then they tell me they can't reimburse me for all of it, and then
Toyota (USA) tells me that they don't even provide rental cars? Are
private dealerships just screwing Toyota (USA) or something?

If they never said you'd have to pay any of the rental car UP
FRONT...you are not responsible for it. Stick it to them. They can't
pull this 'after the fact' stuff. Did you sign anything that
specifically said you'd pay $XX per day for the rental car or did they
just give it to you saying that they'd be taking care of it?

I had the HG work done before the "extended" warranty notice was mailed. I
submitted all receipts to Toyota Customer Service in CA. and a check for
the full amount was sent to me, including towing and rental car. Toyota
also paid for a rental car when the block was subsequently replaced due to
the blown HG (and the idiots at Lynch Toyota in CT.) So they definitely
paid twice in my case. I don't remember the amounts, but the first rental
was for ~2-3 weeks (minimally)

I talked to Customer Service in CA and they said they don't pay for rental
cars. I keep telling these people (dealership & Customer Service) that I
know of lots of people who have been completely reimbursed for all
services... PLUS more. Of course none of those claims helpe me because
they always tell me that it's a case by case basis. I had my truck towed
free because I have AAA. Toyota didn't even have to pay for that.
Any suggestions? How did you talk Customer Service into paying for your
rental car? They keep saying that they don't pay for 'em... or that
they'll pay like $25 a day... which is a contradiction anyway.
I think that's B.S. if one person can just send in receipts and get
reimbursed... when I have to go through all this crap. No offense
to you ... just to Toyota.

Leo,
My guess is that your auto tranny is going in and out of torque
converter lock-up; another term for it is overdrive. I'm not sure
what exactly would cause that, possibly a tranny kick-down cable
out of adjustment, a throttle position sensor going wacko and
fooling the transmission? It sounds like a question for our
Toyota tech guru, Jim Brink.... Jim?

Regarding the conversation about dual antennas. I am in the process of replacing my Radio Shack antenna with a "real" antenna.
I went to the Firestik site (http://www.firestick.com) to see what they have to offer. I found this in their tech docs area.
HIH - particularly #32
|From "Things Every CB'er Should Know" copyright Firestik Antenna Company - used without permission.
30.If you are installing a single antenna on one side or the other of your vehicle, best on-the-road performance will be
realized if the antenna is on the passenger side of the vehicle.
31.Co-phased (dual) antenna installations create a radiation pattern that favors communication directly in front and back of
the vehicle. This is why co-phase systems are popular with people who do a lot of highway driving. Co-phase antennas must be
center or top loaded. Top loaded antennas are the best.
32.Some people believe that co-phased antennas must be separated by a minimum of nine (9) feet. We have successfully used
co-phase antenna systems with spacing as little as four (4) feet. Space alters the pattern and not always negatively. Each
vehicle will be different.
****** My comment ******
Without installing and testing, how does one know that it will work on 'positively' for their setup?
33.Co-phase antennas can improve performance on vehicles that lack good ground plane characteristics (fiberglass motorhomes,
trucks, etc.). Instead of using available metal to reflect the radiated energy, the antennas use each others field.
34.When tuning co-phased antennas (dual), it is best to adjust both antennas an equal amount to maintain equality in their
individual resonant frequency.
35.On a co-phase system, if you try to tune each antenna independently using RG-58 type coax and then connect them to the
co-phasing harness, you will almost always find that they will appear electrically short as a set. We recommend that you first
assemble the entire system. Take all measurements and make all adjustments with both antennas in place.

The recommendation to co-phase will sell twice as many antennas:) I always take fire-sticks advice with a minimum of 10 lbs. of
salt because they also recommend 18 feet of coax for any installation. This is in technical RF Engineering terms "Malarkey".
Wilson makes "real" antennas. The Wilson "Silver Load" is an excellent alternative to the fire-stick.

OK, this might sound like a dumb question to some of you, but I just swapped
a SR-5 insturment cluster (tach, oil press, etc) into my '85 4Runner with the
standard speedo only guage. My truck had 209xxx miles on it and the new
cluster shows 148xxx miles. I need to adjust this mileage to reflect the
true mileage of the truck. How can I do it? I know I can hook a drill up to
the speedometer and spin it at 85mph (max on the speedo) for 50K miles (That
would take 588 hours!) , but I'd rather disassembe the odo, and set the
mileage. The trouble I'm having is that it looks like the speedometer needle
has to come off to get to the odometer gears. How does the needle come
off???
Anyone???

I can't help with the fix, but I have a related story. We just did the same
swap with the SR5 guages from an 87 truck into an 84 truck. It just happended
that both trucks were at 125xxx miles, within 800 miles of each other.
Anyway, the connections were a little different but the swap went fairly easy.

It would be nice to see the true milege, besides the law, to make it
easier to schedule maintenance and see how far he can drive it before the
engine goes. :-)

SEE - I told everyone it would be a dumb question that would get some
responses like this, but all the maintenance records for the truck show the
mileage that the PO did stuff, and my records note the mileage - it's really
not that bad, but the truck looks and runs fantastic for 209k - most people
can't believe it runs as good as it does with no oil burning or leaking! My
parents couldn't believe that I'd drive it to chicago from KC with 209K on it
(i.e. the it's not reliable after 120K mindset!). IF it's hard to do or
requires replacement of the needle, then it will stay 51,003 miles off, and
I'll just have to add that factor in when figuring mileage. (I know it's more
than that, since the orig owner put 31's on sometime around the 100k mark, so
it could be 10% off for the last 100k or so.

Well, after reading this, I had to calm down before I composed my reply to
this....
I take that response personally since I'm the one that was asking the
question. If I were you, I wouldn't jump to conclusions before you know the
facts.
I knew that I'd get someone making comments like this. If I wanted to roll
my speedo back, there's a dozen ways to do it and there are probably some
unscrupulous (sp?) shops that would gladly do it for some $$$ also I
could have simply bought a cluster with less mileage (easy to get since it's
really got 209K, and the highest mileage one the junk yard had was 148k -
they also had one that had 107k - could have got that if I was worried about
mileage). I surely wouldn't be asking on the net for advice on how to do it!
It's Illegal and I'd never want to have anything like that come back on me
- - it's not worth it (jail time and all). I've known people that have rolled
theirs back, or have disconnected their speedometer for years while racking
up 100K or so miles on a car while keeping it under 20K for warranty
purposes, then sold it as a low mileage car - It's basically stealing from
someone that pays good money for the 'low-mileage' car, and the car
manufacturers that pay for warranty repairs. I have also know people that
had purchased cars only to have me take one look at it and have them find out
that they had over 100K MORE than the odometer stated. With a few calls to
pull some records, and a call to the owner I helped get their money back, and
am dam proud of it.
My wife and I drive about 25K miles/year, and our 2.5 yr old avalon
has 62K on it already - I could have disconnected the speedometer, but I
intend to drive it until it's not worth a whole lot (10 years/300K miles) and
I know how it's been taken care of - I have all the records, and I look for
the same when buying a used car wether it's 20K miles or 200K miles.
I want the mileage to match the maintenance records so there is no
question *IF* I ever want to sell the 4 Runner - and that's a mighty big IF,
since I just bought it a couple of months ago, sank almost $2500 into mods in
the last 3 months, and I'm selling my only other 4x4. Te origional owner
took exceptionally good care of it and I also intend to do the same. I have
all the origional paperwork from the purchase, the warrany slips, the
manuals, etc... I've been told to just leave it, which I might do if no one
wil give me a straight answer, but if I decide to sell I'll have to disclose
that it's got the NON-origional mileage - then what is someone to think -
they might think it has 300K or that I'm lying about other things since the
mileage is off.... I invite anyone that cares to come out and look at both
the insturment clusers, and you'll see what I want to do is actually what the
law intends that you do when replacing speedometers. If someone does truely
know how to get the needle off, tehn they can e-mail me direct if they're
worried about others rolling the speedometer back.
So now who is the scum-bag that jumps to conclusions?

Hi to All,
Here is the current dilema for the 85 4runner.
I have Alcan springs with 1 inch lift in front (after reading I should
have gone to 2 or 3) anyway
the rear is now sagging as a result of the front lift.
my question has to do with the vehicle height
Currently the front fenders are riding a height of 3 feet and the back
is running at 2'9" (3 inch diff)
i do know that the back is cut lower but what would be the correct
lift of the new spring to get the vehicle height right ?
I really don't want to spend the 300 again on alcan !!
downey has the 3" spring but do I need that much height ?
Any other good spring manufacturers ?
Will the spring settle to a lower ride height once ridden on ?
thanx for the help

Jack up the rear with your hi-lift until it looks right, then subtract the
non-jacked height from the jacked-up height and that is the amount of
lift.> I really don't want to spend the 300 again on alcan !!
How about $40 for a set of blocks or shackles?

I drove a 95 v6 4runner Sunday and it had a very noticable high-pitched
whining only in 3rd gear under no load. You would hear it as soon as
you shifted in with the clutch in (no load) and any time you weren't
pulling or holding back. As soon as you loaded it, the noise went away.
Only 3rd gear! Any ideas? Is this a potentially terminal condition?
The vehicle had 65k miles.
