From: Tony Bartlett Subject: 14" travel IFS suspension for sale
To: Toy4x4 A friend of mine has a 14" travel IFS suspension for sale, includes
everything from the 26mm (i think) torsion bars, Porshe CV joints, rear
suspension, and everything else that deals with the suspension.
He is selling it because he is getting more into rock crawling and going
with the solid axle conversion. I hear it works really well for
 prerunning but not for crawling
I have some pictures of it on my web page. If interested please check
 it out.

I thought I saw someone talking about "Legal" headers for the 3.0
4Runners? I want some headers that are 50 state legal as I may be
transfered to Los Angeles next year. Any input on headers would be
appreciated. What is the best set up for a daily driven vehicle? I am
also going to get the throttle body bored out to go with my K&N
 filtercharger.

As far as I know Downey V6 headers are the only ones legal in CA...and
that only happened a few months back.

What's the general consenus regarding automatics in the older 4Runners? Are
they as bulletproof as the 5-speeds? I'm looking for a solid-axle SR5 that
my wife can use. The main use would be daily driver/family car with some
"family" 4-wheeling (no radical hard-core stuff).
Any opinions or experience with this setup?

To: Got back from Death Valley tonight. I added 1,400 miles to my odometer
since Friday. (Equivalent to approx. 1,260 miles with corrections to my
gears.) We had a total of 5 vehicles. The weekend was a blast. I'll be
putting together a trip report soon.
Good people + good trails + good weather = Good times
I'd like to thank Don West, Roger Brown, Bob and Tim Stucky from the "list"
and James Fisher from the Gettin Off club for participating. Roger
sacrificed a nut and washer from one of his dual steering stabilizers for a
quick field repair. I lost the nut and washer on my front left shock in
 Titus Canyon. Thanks, Roger.
I don't have a web page so I'll probably attach a text file to a future

So other than being a whipped dog of a used car buyer, I
bought this beautiful red two door to drive everyday. 57 miles one way
is my daily commute, 30 freeway, twenty urban pavement, seven unimproved
backroad. I require snow go ability, 80 mph up long grades, capacity to
carry dogs and/or tools, as well as truck chassis for light
trailering. Except for the last, I would have bought a Subaru.
Offroad demand is low, but the ability is required at times
I would have been happier with a V-6, though all ready the 2.4
liter ' Runner is a better performer than my 2.8 liter S-10. More top
end, and lighter steering. The ride is not as nice, but the rear
 suspension is toast.

I have the cat-back bolt-on 2" mandrel bent Dynomax with the Super Turbo muffler. The sound is just right. It's not too loud.
I did notice an improvement in throttle response off the line and in the powerband.
The Ultraflow is suppose to be one of the least restrictive but it's expensive and loud.

Also, LA isn't that far from Panamint Valley or Death Valley. In Panamint
besides the winching exercise of Surprise Canyon there is Stone Canyon which
is an excellent trail for modified rigs. There is also the Pleasant
Canyon/South Park Canyon loop which is fun for any stock vehicle. There are
also many trails in Death Valley.
BTW was anyone aware that "Ballarat" Don is no longer the caretaker of the

 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org, toyota@btoy1.rochester.ny.us
for the past two weeks or so, i've been having this problem. first i
thought it was cruise control problems but even with the CC off, i
 still experience it.
while cruising at a stable speed, the RPM would jump about 200-300
for a couple seconds then drop back down to 'normal'. then once in a
while, it would jump an extra 1000, then hunt around to normal and
back up 1000 to 500 to 1000 and then back to normal.
so it's something like this: cruising around 2100, then jump to 2500
for a couple seconds, then back to 2100 rpm. then while at around
2100, it would jump to 3100, stay here for about a second, drop down
to 2500, back to 3100, then back to 2100. this drove me nuts when i
had to drive to vegas for about 1000 miles round trip...
 btw, it's a 90 4runner with 101k. it's a v6 and auto tranny. had a
tune up recently and had the cap and rotor changed. around 42k, my
timing belt was changed due to a procedure that was a warranty job.
so, the current belt is around the 'magic' point where it needs to
be changed. has anyone experienced this?

 June,
I mean one type of vehicle, I am not going to drive all the way out to where my
dad lives from California and have him not be able to go on the run! It is such
a long drive for me and such a short drive for my dad I'd like to see his 53'
M38A-1 tackle the trails. The fun of four wheeling is seeing all of the different
types of 4by's. I play with my Toyota enough, well its never enough but...
I like this discussion group because it allows me to find out more about my truck
but if the only 4by's were toyotas things just wouldn't be as fun, diversity is
the best thing about wheelin. I see all types of jeeps, samarai's, datsuns,
fords, chevys, and everything else imaginable and I love it. There is a reason I
am not in a club, they taylor to one vehicle too much, I prefer to wheel with
friends from all the local clubs and that is the reason I wouldn't go on Cruise
 98. Sounds cool but it singles out too many nice rigs. As far as I know the
safari is open to everyone and thats the one I'll be on, if it isn't I'll form my
own group. Does that make sense?
One more thing, I am not afraid of being the only one on the trail. If you come
to the Rubicon you just might find me cruising the trail solo looking to meet
 other wheelers.

Because the citizens don't keep informed and get involved early on. I
did a quick search on the web to check the facts, especially in light
of the fact the governor of NJ, Christine Whitman, is a WOMAN, not a
MAN as implied below. From what could ascertain, this is the phase-in
of a law which was passed back in 1994, I couldn't find when the gov.
actually signed it. Also the governor of any state does not pass any
laws. They must be passed in the state legislature, prior to
signature or veto by the gov. If vetoed then the legislature has an
 opportunity to override.
I'm not saying I agree with this law. What I am saying is government
only works when citizens make the effort to keep informed and to
participate in the normal process of government. Doing so in real
time is always easier than as a reactionary measure. This law has
been on the books for 3 yrs. Why weren't these folks helping the
fight back BEFORE it was passed?
Case in point, how many of you know where your locale stands in
regard to the findings of the required EPA air pollution surveys?
Depending on the results of such surveys the ramifications could be
of GREAT consequence, ie EMISSIONS TESTING! Do you know the trends or
better yet questions in the reliability of these surveys?
We just came very close to having emissions inspections mandated on
us here in the Tidewater area of VA. One of the over the limit ozone
readings was quite suspect. It took much work and research to bring
the scientific data together for presentation to the EPA. But that
work together with clean results from more recent tests have help
stay the testing requirements. Luckily, I happen to work with a
member of the air pollution board at NASA LaRC.
So whether its bumper height, suspension mod, or emissions laws GET
 INVOLVED!
If we stand idly by while politicians do something stupid, just what
 does that say of us?

To: There are two types of defaltors out there.
The $10 ones screw on to the stems and just let out the air. You have to
take them off when you think the tires are where you want them. They don't
shut off so you have to watch them.
Then there are the $45 ones that shut off at a pressure you set by turning
the nut inside. One turn is one pound of pressure. These shut off when you
want them too. You can also put them on and start driving for a bit. They'll
still shut off at the right time. Stop after a few minutes and take them
off. The only place I know that sells them is Oasis Off road Mfg in Lake
 Forest, Ca. (888) 96OASIS. They're $45+/- for 4 deflators, adjustment tool,
a low pressure guage (1-20lbs), and a leather carrying case. I'm really hapy
with mine. You can see a picture of one at http://members.home.com/aj7/ .

tell ya which ones are slower... slower than the one you have now. You

From: Agustinus Gunawan Subject: WHY??? Easter Safari in Moab???
To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" About 10 years ago when Toyota start making faces around the toughest trail
in USA many Toyota owner were not allowed to participate. Many Toyota
owners could only curse them saying they are stupid, ego maniac, arrogant
 SOB etc.
Now we are a force they reckon with. But should we do the same thing that
 we use to curse????
I think we should welcome other brand of vehicle and show them the Toyota
 way.
If you would ban other brand then you should ban any Toyotas that have non
Toyota part, such as V8 engine, NV4500 trans and Dana axles.

Toyota's are great man, but all Toyoya's would bore me to death. I
 personally
like to see a wide variety of 4x4's on the trail, and see how each one
 performs.
I would cry if I had to watch 20 Toyota trucks go over the same obstacle,
