 To: Toyota 4x4 Digest-posting John M. Smith,
 Here's the mods I've done to my 3.0L V6 1990 4Runner 5spd:
 - K&N Filtercharger (eliminates restrictive
 factory air box)
 - 4mm over bored throttle body
 - Downey headers (eliminates restrictive
 factory crossover pipe
 and manifolds)
 - 2-1/4" exhaust
 - J.E.T. computer chip
 - MSD 8.5mm wires
 - MSD-6 Off Road ignition module
 - Flex-A-Lite Black Magic electric cooling fan (replaces
 factory belt driven fan)
Results: The truck's throttle response is "jumpy" compared to
 stock,
much more low end power, and can still get 18-20 mpg at legal highway
speeds with 33" Bridgestone Mud Duelers and 4.88's!

Where did you get the MSD setup? How much did it cost? Do you like it?

Check and see if your brakes are working and don't panic, I have 150K+ miles on
my truck and my front brakes are about 50% and my rears are about 30% . Never have
replaced them yet, and they work great.

 To: toy4x4@tlca.org
Here is the problem. I just bought and mounted dual 5' Firestick
antennas behind the cab on my p/u. I drilled holes through the lip of
the bed rail directly behind the cab and bought mounts that basically
just screwed in above/below the holes. It worked fine for one day but
after a few trips on the highway at 70+ and one trip through the mall
parking garage (stupid move on my part) they are bending the lip back.
I've taken them off for the time being as too not bend the lip back far
enough so it can't be bent back into shape. I'm curious how other have
their antennas mounted. I do want them behind the cab, not on hood or
back towards tail gate. I know the CB guy showed me a mount that most
people use for mounting antennas behind the cab. Guess I may have to
look at it again. Appreciate any help. Hopefully my SWR problem in
related. Guess I won't know until I remount the antennas, which will
 most likely be 3-4 days.

Just want to ask for some help from those of you who have installed CB's
in your trucks. I know this is off topic so please reply via Email so
others don't have to be bothered with it. Just the other day I
purchased a new Cobra 75 WX ST CB and dual 5' Firestick II Antennas.
I've mounted everything and am in the process of tuning my antennas. My
I test any channel I am getting a reading of 3-4 off the SWR meter. I
know it has to be under 2 to be effective. I've tried making major
changes in the antenna tunings but the SWR doesn't move. I've read that
a reading in red zone for all channels means possible shirt or something
like that. Not sure how to test this seeing I'm not too smart when it
comes to electronics. Appreciate any help or referral to any pages on
the web that may help me.

Technically, you rally need to have duals a quarter wavelength (about 8
feet) apart to gain the advntage of giong dual. You might want to try it
single first.> I've mounted everything and am in the process of tuning my antennas. My> I test any channel I am getting a reading of 3-4 off the SWR meter. Is the SWR meter calibrated? maybe its reading high everywhere. On what
channel do you get your lowest SWR readings? this will help us narrow
down your tuning troubles. I get under 2.0 across the board with a single
 3' antenna.

Well, one thig I heard is that dual antennas are more bad than good due to the
fact that is is next to impossible to get them far enough apart on a Toy. Any
 more info on this?
I say take the whole setup to a good CB shop and have them match everything
 up.

Every Firestick install that I have ever seen that had ifinite SWR was because
the threaded portion or the base was touching ground. Those little white
nylon spacers are absolutely necessary. That type of mount should NOT touch
metal to metal on the chassis. According to those on the list (Wiley Davis),
I am a "Radio Nerd" so e-mail direct if you want for specific questions or we
can keep it on this forum if nobody minds.

else that is not a Semi Truck for that matter). If the radiating elements are
closer than nine feet then they will become directional. Everyone to the left and
right of you will hear you very well and your front and rear coverage will
suffer. For a truly great antenna, the Wilson 1000, hard mounted (this means go
ahead and cut a hole) on the roof is very difficult to top. This is the optimum
 location for good omni-directional coverage.
Perhaps a good shop is the solution if the spacers are not the issue. You can
smoke the radio if you keep trying and it is not tuning down.

If you like to try some desert running, there are a bunch of great roads
off of hiway 15 at/near Barstow. It's about two hrs away from metro Los
Angeles and halfway to Las Vegas. Great fireroads and lots of land to
play on....but it gets kinda hot during the summer months. Some listers
are travelling to Gorman this coming weekend.....'bout an hour and a half
away from Los Angeles -- to the north. I'll be going to Azusa Canyon this
Sunday for the first time......about 45 minutes to an hour away from
 downtown L.A.

I have been using a eagle accutrail for several years and love it. The
only disadvantage is that you can not take it hiking with you because of
the size. It is in the same housing as a fish finder. But, this is
also an advantage over the hand helds in the truck. The screen is much
larger and the buttons are easy to find while driving. I have mine
mounted on the dash in front of the passenger's seat. I have the
antenna permanently mounted on my roll bar. I believe the new version
of the one I have is called the accuview and I think it can be connected
to a PC. You can find out more information at www.eaglegps.com.

It is a second starter solinoid on the positive wire that runs to the
starter motor. I used a Ford solinoid and attached it near the starter
out of obvious view. Unless both solinoids are engaged, no power can go
to the starter. I suppose you could also do something with a relay on

Why not hook a switch to the fuel pump? The person might turn the
motor over, and it might fire a little wire but it will run out of gas
and they certainly don't want to try find the problem stuck in the

Part of the problem might be that it isn't designed to be in "all other
gears while going down the highway at about 75." Stick to 5th and
 possibly 4th gears. :)
Sorry, I couldn't resist the cheap shot. I'm no expert on transmissions,
but it sounds like a bearing that whines only under a load. I'm sure

I started my 96 tacoma up tonight and instantly heard some type of
grinding noise. It's rpm related, definitely in the engine, but I
couldn't find anything. Sounded maybe like something was rubbing on one
of the belts or belt wheels. I decided to drive it around the block,
and as soon as I touched my steering wheel I got a new symphony of
sound. Kind of a whale mating call, grinding sound when I turn the
steering wheel (not like gears grinding, though). Obviously something
in the steering. So two different new sounds, and I don't like either
one of them. Anybody have an idea on a good place to look first?

My> question is, In a comparo between the two, which would you( the list> members) choose. What's the difference in off-road ability, and> Rock-crawl ability between the 2. Any advice would be appreciated.
I've had both (well they were IFS) and they're both good rigs, but
here's some of the things I noticed:
 - -The x-cab always seemed just a *little* long. I always went 4xing with
friends with standard cabs, and it always seemed like mine was just a
little bit too long to make it around a corner or over a bump that they
didn't have as much trouble with. Then again, maybe I'm just not as
 good a driver..
 - -The length (on the highway) was nice, and to me noticable. I'd get out
of mine, and try out my friend's standard cabs, and they always fealt a
little less stable--kinda like they were more likely to swap ends. The
difference was real small though, and only really noticable above say
 70mph.
 - -The x-cab is nice, because you've got just barely enough space for
speakers, to recline the seat, and carry some soft bags in it.
The 4runner is better in a lot of ways--you've got room for five people
plus gear AND it's shorter. You can also sleep in them if you want to.
They don't have the 'rusty bed' problem like a lot of the p/u's do.
But they're a lot more expensive (most I looked at were about 2000 more
than a comperable p/u), insurance is slightly higher, and because of all
the plastic interior panels and removable top, they tend to have a lot
 more squeaks and rattles.
I dunno, when I had my extra-cab, I always hated having all that
'wasted' space (the bed) and the long wheelbase, but now that I have the
4runner, I miss the simplicity of the x-cab. I'm also broke!

To: Toy4x4 You might try calling Marlin for this answer. I talked to him one time
and he blew a seal on his box (a seal he normally carried because it has
 happened before).
I am just not sure if it was that seal or one behind the pully.
 Tony.

I didn't know that ProZap was a chain. I only know of
 one, Sonora, California.

Not sure where you are, but I had Play Ruff 4x4 in Knoxville TN do my rear
diff. They are certified by ARB. On that note, you need to call ARB and ask
for the nearest shop that they have listed to do their work - I always feel
 safer that way.

 To: toy4x4@tlca.org
The transfer case in my 96 Tacoma is making me crazy.
It has failed twice in the last six weeks. The problem
seems to be with the shift fork which has been on back order since
tuesday. The dealer said I may get the truck back by next wednesday.
 The problem occurs when
shifting into 4hi while driving on snow covered roads.
It grinds pretty bad while shifting and stays in 2wd.
Anyone else had transfer case problems with their Tacoma? Mine is a 4
 cylinder with ADD.

dont quote me on this but I would say that your add is not engaging and
that your front and rear drive shafts are not spinning equal and the
 gears cannot mesh.
