 John,
I am not sure what year truck you have, but if it is an IFS model I have
some 4.56 gears that was going to sell this summer at a swap meet. They are
from a '91 4runner and when I pulled them out had about 40.000 miles on them
I have since gone to 5.29's. If you are interested or for that matter if
anyone else would like them call me or e-mail me I would like to get $225.00
for them you pay shipping. I live in Denver, so it is some what central. I
will be in Moab for the CRUISE MOAB '98 event so if some one was going I
 could take them and deliver
 Thanks

This question is mostly directed at Jim Brinkman.
I have an 81 4X4. The carb is supposed to keep a high idle speed while the
engine warms up. The it is supposed to drop of to the low idle speed. My
truck is not consistantly dropping to the low idle. This is the stock carb.
I've sprayed cleaner and lubricant on the linkage with no help. Is there an
adjustment? You can refer to page numbers in the Toyota manual if that helps.
Oh? and this is a California smog equipped truck.

Sorry, I can't point out the exact page numbers in the manual but I can
direct you to the "EC", emissions control section. This will outline the
 various secondary carburetor systems.
First off, has the choke housing been adjusted? If the choke is set too
rich, it will not pull off, even in the warmest weather.
I seem to remember the early 20/22R had the choke housing heated by
coolant. Not totally sure though as this varied by engine calibration.
If not, the choke heater is supplied voltage from the alternator. If the
alternator is unable to supply this voltage and the choke heater is not
coming on, this too will keep the choke set.
Are the vacuum lines intact to the choke pull-off and/or choke breaker
system? If the vacuum lines are missing or the diaphram bad in the choke
breaker/pull off, the choke will stay on. In addition, if the VSV,
vacuum switching valve, is not working, adequate vacuum is not getting
to these systems cuasing the choke to stay on.

Pretty underpowered but the engine/trans. combo. is very reliable. Keep
the trans. serviced at specified intervals and it won't let you down.

In response to several posts yesterday,
I was just in the market for a new battery, my winch/lights killed mine.
( it still started the truck but winching was out of the question)
I wanted the optima yellow top for winching, I was told by several
distributors that optima does not recomend the yellow top as a starting
battery. They said using the yellow top as a starting battery would kill it.
I ended up with a preditor battery, dry cell but not spiral, small battery,
brass terminals(dual mount) and same dollars as the yellow top $189 over the
counter. I was told that this manafucturer says it is ok to both deep cycle
and start with the same battery. I have only had it a week but plan to due
some test winching this weekend to test it out.
You could easly fit two of these preditor batterys in the battery area of a
Toyota. Can you say $$$$$. I only bought one.
Last weekend I saw a guy who had moved his battery to the front of the bed
of his toy P/U. He used a remote mounting kit that he got at a speed
shop(wire, terminals, plactic enclosure box.). His reason was rust but it
would also make sense to mount a second battery there.
Starting battery under the hood and deep cycle battery in the back.
Ps my experience is that optima does not answer thier 800 number it was busy
 all day. off the hook?

In my 81 toy,i had a huge catterpillar starting battery in the box.I
made my own cradle and cover for it and wired it directly to the stock
system.I used the stock battery tray for a place to put my tools and
winch solenoids. These batteries have a huge reserve capacity and a
 1100cca rating.Once i drowned the engine out in a swamp,so i had to
winch myself out with no alternator. The pull used all the cable on the
winch(110')and after i got everything dried up it spun the engine over
just like it was a freshly charged battery. When it was really cold up
here(40 C.)my truck was the only thing around that would start.
These batteries can be had for around $220(canadian).If you're
thinking about a bed mounted battery this might be a cheap alternative
 to an expensive Optima.

To: "Toyota, Mailing" My 91 Runner was equipped with Bridgestone Mud Duelers when I
purchased it. It was so loud that on the test drive my wife thought I
had killed the engine at a stop sign because the tires were not moving
and therefore had stopped making noise. The previous owner never
bothered to rotate the tires, and they had worn unevenly. Every other
lug was raised about a 1/4 of an inch from the previous lug. It may
have been her not rotating the tires, but those mud tires where not
worth the NVH in my opinoin. I now run BFG All Terrains, and I am the
local GO TO guy for retrieving stuck 4by's. The AT's are nearly silent
on the street and perform as well as the Bubba Mud tires did off road.

I've been running Bridgestone dueler MT's for 6-7 months now and I've
eaten (on rocks mostly)(and of course pavement) plenty of tread off
already, so I can speak of wear. They're wearing evenly (I watch the
pressure, and rotate at regular intervals) They're not outrageously
loud either. I wouldn't write the Dueler MT off yet...sounds like yours
were screwed up royally before you ever got to drive on them. I talked
to many people that had both brands of MT and all of them said they got
many more miles outta the Duelers...that was the deciding factor for
 me. :-)

I dented my tailgate on my last 4by trip, and I've heard that you can
use toilet plungers to pull some dents out (the metal is not creased,
and there is no chipped paint). Is this true?
I've also heard that there are special suction cup designed exactly for
this purpose (with some sort of vacuum plunger?). If so, where can I
 get/use on?
BTW, the Los Coyote Indian Reservation just does NOT like me!

Saw one recently with a custom battery mount that made use of the space
where the AC compressor would be if you had one. I didn't notice
if it was attached to the frame or the wheel well but it wasn't attached
 to the engine.
Personally I would contemplate running battery #2 in a 'delta box' type
 deal in the
bed... And then I'd ask on the list if I should do it, and then someone
 would call
me an idiot and tell me a better way of doing it...

From: Eric Johnson Ok, what kind of success have you all had with squeezing dual
batteries in the toy engine bay with a 22RE? I'd love to go duals
since I hope to get a winch soon, but I'm having trouble figuring
out how/where to mount a second battery. The best I can figure with
my '87 is to relocate the washer reservoir and squeeze two
 batteries in that area...
funny you should mention this... just came back winter CES in vegas. and
like when this topic came up for stereos in the first gen 4runners, i told
you about a winning system in one. and the car was there and i took tons of
digital pixs. so as soon as i develop the pictures, i'll post or send them
and this guy has a great setup for dual yellow top optimas. one on the OEM
spot and the other is right next to it. he has a 22r so there were tons of
rooms to stuff these gigantic guys into it. also, he custom made the second
platform for the other batt with a cool holder for the fuse. each terminal
on the battery housed dual terminal that had 2/0 gauge power cable on it.
really cool. too bad i couldn't listen to it...
other option that you may not know about is that the red top optimas
WERE sold as a 6v version. how does this look like? take the regular 12v
sucker, slice it in half so each half has 3 'cells' in it. then you can
wired them in series so you get 12 volts. the cool part is that you can
mount these where normal size one wouldn't go and still have that optima batt.

 Dan,
I just redid the exhaust on my 1986 22R-TE P/U last week. One of the
pieces I used was a Random Technologies free flow cat. There was an
article on them in "Turbo" a couple of months ago.
The part number was #822500, 2.5" weld-in style cat. The cost, including
shipping, was $187. Their phone number is (770) 978-0264.
I re-did everything from the headpipe back, increasing the tubing
diameter to 2.5" and putting in a Walker DynoMax Super Turbo muffler.
I'm really happy with the results, but since I changed three things at
once (tubing size, muffler and cat) it's really hard to say how much any
single component contributed to the overall effect.
I asked around a little before I bought the cat, and Random Technologies
seems to have a pretty good rep, FWIW.
 Jeff
BTW, Random warranties the unit's core for 2 yrs/25k miles, and the
stainless steel casing for 5 yrs/50k miles...

 I got mine from Performance Products ( 1-800-553-2840 ). I posted this a few
days ago.>>>I purchased the "free flow cat" from Performance Products approx. 2 & 1/4

school from home on the interstate it had a problem. Just behind the front
mounting flange & ahead of the body of the cat the tube broke clean in half.
Not sure why, ir how long it has been stressed/cracked (no sound evidence
before this), but I just wanted to put this out there to anyone who might be

By the way, $20 at Midas fixed me up, but makes me mad I could have done it

 Hi John...
Sure that's okay, and anyone else wanting to tag along please feel free
to do so. We're meeting at the Carl's Jr. in Gorman (there's only one
exit to Gorman, and it's off of the 5 freeway) at 9:30am on Sat. Jan.
17th. If you have a snow sled or disk, bring 'em too. This run will be
suitable for stock-type vehicles also, but tow hooks front and back
don't hurt a bit (as you might well have to be pulled or do the pulling)
and also a CB tuned to channel 17 is preferred.
 See you there!

 John,
Like Mike said, this is primarily a snow run for the kids (aren't all of
us though?) so don't be disappointed if we don't see a lot of heavy
trail time. There is a neat obsticle course/driver's training area in
Hungry Valley, similar to the one at Hollister Hills and I'm sure you
won't be the only one left playing there at the end of the day.
 See ya!

Perhaps you never killed the corrosion that the first battery started?
I know when I put in my Optima I cleaned everything VERY thoroughly to
STOP the corrosion. Many wires I completely replaced, but some just
cleaned. With a wire brush I removed as much corrosion as possible then
I soaked the wire in a Water/baking soda mixture to neutralize the
acid. I had to let my + battery cable soad for 30 minutes (!) before
 the bubbling would stop!
Perhaps you should clean 'em again and soak 'em in baking soda Leo...

CCA rated at 0 degrees while CA rated at room temp if I am not mistaken.
Three years ago when I got my optima it cost me $129+shipping which is not
 cheap considering the weight.
At that time the optima stand from the crowd since the average battery have
a much less CCA for the same size but now the gap are narrowing and the
price of optima should go down.

For what it is worth I installed a panther batterry in my 4runner
for several reasons; first of I like the fact of acid incase of a crash.
Second I am planning on running duals this spring and you know how cramped
the runners engine bay is but two bp 800's or one bp800 and one bp 1000 fit
in the origenal bat. tray. Third I really like the brass post they use I
have yet to find corrosion or have a loose connection. And last but not
least the steel cases around the body just makes them tougher in case of a
mishap. They do cost more than a normal unit but compared to the optima the
price is actualy cheaper. I have had mine for about 1yr. and will be buying
another soon. As for the optima some of my friends run them and they
perform just as good, if you do get one get the yellow top it is better also
the dual post allow you to mount accesories easier. That is my opinion hope
 it helps

I've asked this question before and I still have the problem of an '88
4Runner SR5 V6 Pulling to the left. It is not tire related I have 2
sets of tires mounted up always for winter and non-winter driving.
Trust me, I've eliminated a tire problem. This is a brake system
 problem.
My question to the list is: (those of you working in Toyota shops please
 respond)
What is the most common resolution to pull when braking hard? I've had
a lot of work done on the brakes and nothing has ever made a difference.
Basically I'm a bit confused as to what the reason could be and I'd like
to know what the no. 1 cause is.
I've driven several other toy4x4 trucks that had the same problem. I
think it must be a bit common.
Thanks in advance for any info. or comments.

well, it has happened again. Sometime between midnight and 8 this morning, my
truck was broken into, and this time the head unit was ripped out. Get this:
they took out the MTX truck boxes (you know, the ones I bought last Christmas
when my last set was stolen) and set them under the truck. I assume they were
going to come back... I guess I have something to be thankful for.
They got in through the rear slider - pryed it open. So, anyone have any
suggestions to secure the slider better for the future?
By the way, the speaker boxes are now attached to the truck via eye bolts, 1/4
coated-cable, and a pad lock. It may not be perfect, but slowing them down is
the best anyone can hope for.

I've got a magnetic switch installed with my alarm on my rear slider.
It was somewhere around ten bucks. Another good thing to go for is an
electronic hood lock (around fifty), which is just a solenoid with a
cable attached to it, that is opposite and stronger than the oem hood
latch cable, so no one can get into the engine bay to rip out the alarm.
None of that would stop anyone from breaking your windows, grabbing your
stuff and running, but maybe if you slow them down enough and then scare
them too, they'd leave you alone.

I added two of those home window locks to each side of the sliding rear
window. They are the notched-type that sit in the rails of the window
and screw to the frame with a wing nut. I did this because the rear
window was rattling (cheap after-market slider). It takes an extra 2
seconds to open the rear window now, but I rarely open the rear window.

I've considered briefly the possibility of installing a high powered
stun gun (one of the ones with projectile electrodes) either under the
driver seat or maybe on a tripod mounted between the seats. It would be
armed/disarmed with the alarm, and I'm not sure what type of targeting
system should be used, but if one could make it work, it'd be an awesome
 theft deterrent...

What will leak? The head gasket? The timing chain cover? Not true if you
use care and follow the manual's recomendation on where to seal the
timing cover, cylinder head, and block.> I don't know too much myself about how engines work so I> was going to have someone help me with the job. What parts will I>> need to replace other than the timing chain? Where other than a>> dealer can I go to buy these parts?
You can usually find the chain and related parts in a kit form. This kit
includes the chain, guides, tensioner, seals, and gaskets. The
aftermarket brand sold by most Toyota dealers (because the kit is quite
a bit less expensive than the piecing the parts together from Toyota) is
made by Bryco. It is a good quality kit that contains all of the needed
parts. I have heard of many auto parts stores that carry Bryco as well.
Be sure to replace the o-ring seal on the oil pump to timing cover
flange too. Odds are, if you fail to replace it, that it will leak 15
minutes after you fininsh the timing chain job.

 I've got a 90 Toy 4x4 SR5 with a V6. It has about 85k miles on it and is
in pretty good shape. The guy who had it before me removed the muffler
and ran dual pipes out the back. The truck is really loud. I want to
get more low end grunt out of it and thought about Downey headers. I
wanted to replace the exhaust with 2.5" stainless 16ga pipe and add a
new free flowing cat, a Borla racing muffler and route it back to the
stock location. Have you heard anything about the North West Off Road
headers they just came out with? I'm not too familiar with headers and I
want to get a quality set that won't warp or split. Also is it worth it
to have them coated as with Jet Hott Coatings to increase their live
span? I also thought about adding either a K&N filtercharger kit or a
 Downey intake kit.
I would appreciate any info you could give me.
 Thanx.

3.4s are under a recall status (please don't flame me personally). Most
3.4s however are still covered under the powertrain warranty.
No other problems that I can mention at the moment.

DX models can be found with the full gauges as they were available as an
option in a package with other items. Look for a DX with variable
 intermittent wipers and tilt wheel.
