To: Well, I wasn't careful the other weekend and got water in my differential.
I knew that I should have put on some of those diff breathers! Oh well,
since my gears burnt up this gives me an excuse to go to 4:88's. But when
I started checking prices, I found that changing both front and rear gears
would cost me at least $1000. I wanted to go ahead and put in some lockers
while I was at it, but I don't have the $$$ to do it all. So, I have to
make a decision. Should I buy 4:88's for the front and rear, or just
replace the burnt up gears and get a locker with it.

Do it yourself for half the price.

Get a loan an do the gears & lockers, front & rear! Then eat cup o soup until
 it's
paid for. 4WPW has credit right in the shop. If you do the rear only you kill
 both
the front and rear diff if you put the truck in 4WD, You must do both.
It's allways the same question food and shelter or wheeling?

I Still do the same thing with my '86 Toyota 4Runner with manual hubs.
 I Definately Agree with Jeff!
ADD is a major improvement, [w/ my '97 Tacoma (for me)]
 over manual hubs.
No getting out to check/lock the hubs when I need 4wd.
Just flip the lever and go.
I'm not sure how much you'd have to pay me to go
back to manual hubs, but I know it would be far more than $100. :)> Jeff Delzer> '94 SR5 V6 XtraCab with ADD hubs
I Agree It Would be Alot More! :-)

Thanks, Dee! I was starting to feel like the Lone Ranger out here. :)
I'm glad someone else appreciates their ADD hubs as much as I do!

From: Scott Rowin Subject: Heater in 1st Gen 4 Runner
 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
Had a unfortunate flood in my 4 Runner today.. looks like the heater
core is leaking, filled up the passenger side pretty good - nothing like
hot antifreeze smells in the morning (thankfully there's a floor drain plug
 there).
So looking around, the leak is over on the rear of the passenger
side, and I'm wondering how the heater core was ever designed to be removed.
The "bucket" containing the core & fan/ducting is pretty well jammed in
there, and no book I've come across on the newer dash style 1st gen ('88)
shows anything. I'm guessing that the evaporator for the A/C will have to
come out to let the heater unit be removed. Getting it out the drivers side
looks like a real jam - doubtful it'd come out.
Anyone have to mess with this yet, and how did you get it out?
 thanks, Scott

And if you see a black 94 reg cab with a black shell (uh, no winch, stock
front bumper but tube rear)...that's me! Stop by and say hi, by all means!
I'm also staying at the Econolodge, and I'm bringing the Nat'l Georgraphic
"Trails Illustrated" map along with 6 or 8 (I fergit) USGS "official"
 quadrangles.
I plan on leaving the South Bay Area around 10am, and haven't decided yet
on my route to Hwy 5; I may go 25 to Coalinga and connect through there
just for the ride. Anyway....those going, post times, routes and CB
channels and maybe we can rendezvous along the road...otherwise see ya at
 Ridgecrest *;)

To engage auto hub (like manual hub) you have to come to complete = stop.=20 Change position of the TC. shift stick to 4H and take off (of course on = manual=20 hubs you go out side and change position on the hubs), after that you = can go=20 between 2H and 4H on-the-fly, as long as you do no backwards travelling = in 2H,=20 because that is the way the auto hubs disengages, (not a problem on the = manual=20 ones).
A normal position on a manual or auto hub for the most of us should = bee=20 FREE, (or disengaged).
It should be in LOCKED or engaged position when we expect a need = for 4x4=20 capability.

To: I got your message on the digest and thought I would share a little with you... I have poly EVERYWHERE. :-) Mine was actually set up by the guys at Energy (I used to work with the R&D guys wife). They even used my '90 as a prototype for the cab mount bushings they developed. Anyway, I thought that was pretty nice of 'em... Pros: Stiffer parts. Less of that "loose feeling". You can gain just a little more control on the road. No need to worry about parts deteriorating too fast, although they can be cut up if you're not careful. And they are resistant to soaps and solvents. Choice of colors... They're sold just about anywhere. Cons: They do get noisy and squeaky after a while. If you have a zerk fitting on your control arms, spring eyes, then you can just use some white moly grease to lubricate them (I don't have those). Stiffer parts (I know I put them under Pros as well). You might get a little less (not much though) travel and the ride might be a little bouncier. My overall impression is that I am happy with the setup I have. So far, the only real complaint is the squeaking, but I've just been too lazy to do anything with them. I like doing a little desert pre-running, so the stiffness actually helps me in the long run. I don't generally like the twisty stuff or good trails that are very technically challenging. That stuff is up to you. My .0005 after taxes worth. Replace the check valve and hose from the intake manifold to the booster. There was a TSB many years ago in regards to this. First a few days ago I had my tires rotated. Now my truck seems to pull a little bit harder to the right. However it has done this since I got in last august. And it seems that the tread is wearing evenly. I've heard people talking about this and would like to know if this is hard to fix. Second, on the same day I rotated my tires by ignition lock decided not to accept my key. I could get the key in but it would not turn. I have got it to work for the moment, but now there is a trick to getting the lock to rotate. Should I replace the ignition lock? Is that hard to do?
