They do sell soft ride and regular add a leafs now, regulars are stiff. I
installed the whole kit at first and gained almost 3 1/2" of lift in the rear,
more than I wanted. I then (according to instructions) removed the factory 3rd
leaf and my lift dropped to 2" , which was what I was looking for. Excellent
 ride, (with Rancho RS9000's)
better articulation than stock, and my butt wasn't dragging when I tow my boat or
haul firewood in the bed. Cost was about $120 local with tax, and with 32x11.50's
I am able to stuff the tires all the way into the fender well with no rubbing. (no
 I didn't drop my bumpstops)

The second cheapest is to add large blocks under the bumpstops to limitupward
travel. Is this guy planning to put something in the diffs or is he making
a show truck (like everybody else these days). If he is looking for off-road
performance the first step is to put a locker into the rear diff. Then if there
 is
money go for the lift and tires. A locker will do more for offroad traction.
You can fit 33" tires on it with a 3" body lift. Has he thought about changing
the gears? 35" tires will put the gearing way to high, forget about ever using
5th gear and it will be hard to start out in 1st, lots of clutch slipping to get
started. To put 35" tires on (and be able to use it offroad) your are going to
need a 4" lift along with the body lift.

I've got 35's and let me say there is no cheap way and there is no easy way, new
things will wear out and the problems are endless. If he is looking for cheap and
easy forget it but if he wants to put in the time and patience 35's can do
 miraculous things ;)

Just in case he's willing to give up the idea of building a show truck,
(is that what the 35's are for??), he could always go with 31's, which
fit much better and generally don't require expensive gearing changes,
etc, etc... Relatively cheap and easy, just like the man wanted.

General info about your vehicle, self, etc.: My dad bought the truck when
it was brand new and I've wanted it since then. It was actually the first
vehicle I ever drove on the road. I finally got it about a month ago. It's
 got the V6, 4.56 gears, factory 31's, 5 spd. tranny & sunroof. It's
basically stock right now, but I haven't even started yet.

Hey Ryan! Good to see you again! How's like been treating you? Good I
hope, I see you've got a new truck...change your mind on the 4Runner?
Things haven't changed much with me...still in school. I'll be an old,
dying man before I graduate. :-) My 'Runner is doing good except its
costing me a large fortune this month. I just had the tranny rebuilt
when the engine starts making a bad noise. I ended up having Toy
replace my head gasket, but I'm gonna pay them an additional $1500 to do
a complete rebuild of the engine. So...I'll be very VERY poor for
awhile, but the truck should just purrrr along. (It BETTER just purrrr
 along!)
Back to the HTML...I'm trying to get a new page up for Off-Road.Com
before bed... You can see the new Product Review section I created, and
this new page (Torsion Bar page), by going to the main Toy page at
Off-Road.com and the new pages will be the 1st two listed under "Hot

To: "Toy4x4@tlca.org" I have a 1990 V-6, when I am going down the freeway the engine will quit
and then it will start again. The "check engine light" does not come on,
all of the gages are still working. It feels like it runs out of gas. It
does not do it all of the time and I am not getting any codes when I
check. I have been told that it could be the EFI relay, or the module in
the distributor, or the fuel filter. Any Ideas.

 It's at:

I was thinking sunday if snow falls saturday. Gorman is at the
top of the grapevine (about just under 4000') hwy5.
In gorman is an offroad park called hungry valley.
I really want to take my sun up to play in the snow, last time
I went (last weekend) the snow was like ice and not much
of it at all. I will check the weather saturday afternoon and
post to the list if there is snow. I think it's only about 2 - 3
 hourn from san deigo.

 Hey All,
I have a problem with my current radiator. The top tank seem has
come appart and needs to get fixed. It is not to bad yet and I check
it once a week just to make sure. My truck is an 88 with 135,000
miles. What I am wondering is if I should by a new radiator or have
my present one cleaned out and repaired? I was told by a reputable
radiator shop that it is best to just by a new one for $160 and
change. I think though that he may just be trying to sell one to me.
I haven't been able to fully check out the condition of my present
radiator. I don't see the need to spend $160 on a new raditor if mine
will last, but then I don't want to spend $60 to fix it only to break
it again. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
 Thanx,
 Kev

If I were you, I would buy 31x13.5 Super Swamper TSL SX's and 15x10 rims, my
friend just got these for his 94 reg. cab with no lift, and now his truck is
unstopable. I have 33x12.5 Goodyear MT's and a 4" ProComp lift and his truck
will easily go anyplace mine will, including huge mud holes. The key to good
mud performance with a featherweight truck like a Toyota, is to float. Only
tanks like Chevy's and Ford's need skinny tires. We were out at our local
creek on Sat. and ended up pulling out a 91 Blazer with 44's. (It took both
of our trucks!) He was stuck in a pit we had just floated across many times in
a row. This is just my opinion, and I am in Northern California, so I don't
know what your mud is like, but I can guaruntee one thing, you will not be
let down by the way these tires look, they are awesome!!!!

Toyota dealers (Stevens Creek Toyota in particular)by

This is legit. As a TLCA member you get discounts at MANY places all
over the US. There is a list of places to use the discount on the back
 of the bi-monthly newsletter.
The membership is only $20 year. It saved me over $400 is 1997. :-)
It will save me $500 just this week, since I'm having Steven's Creek do
all that work to my engine right now.

The 'parts suppliers' page on off-road.com lists a few toyota dealerships
who offer off-road.com readers discounts on toyota parts.
www.toyotaworld.com is one of those places.

http://www.tlca.org is the place to go to learn more, and to become a
 member.
TLCA - Toyota Land Cruiser Assoc.
I don't have the newsletter in front of me...but I'll try to remember to
look for Phoenix when I get home tonight. Some of the places that give
discounts are NWOR (not that you'll ever catch me buying from them
again), Downey (I'm not sure about them anymore though...I heard they
stopped), and Steven's Creek Toyota. There's probably 20 more on the
 list though.
I've also found that a lot of stores that don't officially give
discounts will, if you ask. Recently I was in a Speed Merchant buying
an Optima battery...I asked if they gave any club discounts...he asked,
'Which clubs are you in?'...I said TLCA, and CA4WDC....whammo, saved
 $15.

I just got the TRD catalog, and was checking out the low to mid-range cam they
offer. all that duration & lift stuff is Greek to me, but they say it offers
a smooth idle and works with the factory EFI. RPM range: idle to 4800. Is
this just the factory cam? (had to ask...) price is only $129.
How does this compare to other cams? I figured a Toyota part would be the
best, and the price is not bad. How hard is it to install a cam?
 Thanks

 2. Tow strap for hooking to the truck that's stuck (if the chain won't fit)
 3. Length of hardened steel chain and clevis with at least a 10,000 lb + load
rating - the hi-lift pin is designed to break (stop lifting) at 7000 lb.
 4. an old carpet scrap - to put on the chain during winching or to lay on to
fix what 'ya broke ;-) A heavy coat or other cloth will do.
 5. leather gloves & safety goggles (yeah, I hardly wear mine too, but it's
 probably a good safety idea)
 6. Something to bury in the sand or dirt if you don't have a tree or another
truck to anchor to. (pull-pal's also work but cost $$$, and this is supposed
to be the cheap way to do it...)
That should get you going Did I miss anything??

Use as much chain as possible and as little tow strap as possible, because
tow straps stretch, and since a 48" hilift only has 37" of travel,
sometimes all you can do is crank out the stretch in the strap. This can
be reduced by doubling up the strap and keeping it short. Using a hilift
as a winch>worksslow Subject: What basic accesories are needed to use a HiLift as a winch ??
 To: Specilizd@aol.com
You wrote:>> I do not yet have one of those expensive battery burners we call a winch.
However I do have a HiLift jack. The question is what are the basic
accesories needed to use it as a winch.
 Here's a start:
 1. Tree saver
<<2. A good chain or cable to hook to your anchor. You need something that won't
stretch, since you have such a short pull distance with the jack. Stretchy tow
straps won't work, you'll most likely use up your full jack taking the stretch
 out of one.
 3. Possibly a shackle to bolt to the top of the jack to hook on to with the
above. My jack has a bracket bolted on top that your probably work in a pinch.
You can also re-position that bracket 90 degrees (to make an L) which might be
 useful in certain applications.
 4. Possibly another short chain/cable to hook the jack to the vehicle.
Then with the top of the jack hooked to an anchor and the part that moves
hooked to the vehicle, you make pull the vehicle towards the anchor until you
run out of jack, then disconnect, reset, and start again.

Hope you can do better than this. Toy transfer cases rarely go out
and are generally pretty easy to find. The last two I bought....I got
one for $50 (pulled it from vehicle, though transmission was already
gone) and one for $65 (off-the-shelf). These were each from a reputable
