Just take the spray nozzle off and clean it with a toothpick... it's
probably just clogged.

Thanks for responding Kevin, I was wondering about that clamp. How do you like
the Rancho add a leaf? How much was it? How much lift did it give? I decided
on the Downey one because it had the same anti-friction pads as the stockers
and I have always liked their products. I once had a Rancho add a leaf in a
1987 4wd Toy and it rode terrible so I took it out. A few years down the road
I bought a 88 runner and it had the classic rear end sag. I still had the leaf
lying around from the pickup so I threw it in and the ride was exelent,
probally because of the extra weight. I do not think that was a softride leaf
though, I didnt even know they had different ones.

Well, the early Buick Regals probably are the biggest source for the 231,
Olds did use them in the cutlass, I think even pontiac used them in their
cars?? Have you looked at the early 4.3L? it's essentially a small-block
350 (5.7liter) with 2 less cylinders - they have a lot more torque, and were
available in s-10's, blazers, jimmy's, chevy caprice, caprice wagons, etc. a
lot of them were backed by the TH-350, TH-200R4 (no good), or the TH-700R4
>How much will a rebuild kit run me?
Depends on what you need - a basic kit for the 231 will run around $200
(rings, bearings, gaskets, etc.) Figure $500-600 for a set with oversize
pistons. Don't forget a good performance camshaft! The 4.3 is actually
cheaper, since the pistons and rings are common with the 5.7L.
>tranny next...what model vehicle do i wanna pull this out of?
This will HAVE to be out of a matching car, since the chevy version has a
different belhousing Most are referred to as a BOP pattern (Buick, Olds,
Pontiac) - the 4.3l shares the same bolt pattern as - you guessed it the 350
chevy - dime-a-dozen
> Will the stock radiator with a duel electric fan setup be enough?
NO, not for slow trail use, or anything over light cruising... a v-6 radiator
might be enough, or get a HD replacement from Modine or the like - I think
they have them in 2 & 3 row cores.
>Will the coil have to be modified to run the v6 ignition?
Get a HEI distributor from a non-computer controlled car - 1 wire hook-up.
As for the toyota coil - you'll need some type of distributor with a pick-up
coil in it - never seen a factory unit - there are aftermarket units that
will fire the toyota coil. Otherwise it's points & a standard coil - probaby
easiest to scavange what's already in the car that you'll use for a donor.
>Ive also been advised to go with a very low stall tourque converter...just
>how low?
Get a good RV/Motorhome/towing converter - that should be heavy enough, and
if I haven't already mentioned it - one for the 4.3 L will be cheaper due to
the fact that a LOT of RV's & Vans have the 305/350 chevy engine.
Have fun either way.

I seem to remember reading in the latest Advance Adapters catalog that
the latest transverse-mounted 3100, 3800 V6 engines are not adaptable to

I have an EZ Locker in the front of my '89 XCab. It is a great compliment
to the rear Soft Locker. It with the rear locker combined provides extreme
traction in rocks, ruts, steep hill climbs, etc. IMHO the pros heavily out
weigh the cons. I've had mine 1 1/2 years without any problems. It cost
$259.95 at 4WPW.
My first trip with my lockers had snow drifts at the start of the trail.
Since then I haven't seen a lot of snow. I do remember a couple of times
the inside wheel pushing the truck forward rather than making the turn. I
have heard but haven't tried yet to unlock the inside hub temporarily when
you can't make the turn.
Other cons include increased turning radius on the trail. You'll have to
make more 3 point turns. When the hubs are engaged you'll also get some
popping or banging. Sometimes it banged so loud I swore I broke something.
I think the inconviences are minor compared to the add'l traction you get.

David, I have EZ Lockers front and rear in my 87 Pickup. I crawl the rock
in the Central Sierra Nevadas and haven't had any problem. The only thing
I've had happen is one of my hubs is sometime difficult to disengage. I
believe that's due to the cold more than anything else. I'll be taking it
apart in the next week or so to check. I haven't broken any thing but I
only run 30" tall tires (but they are Swamper SX's). I got both lockers
from Hick's 4X4 Specialists out of Pomona CA. Their number is 909-865-7170
or 800-999-POSI if you're not in CA. I paid $540 two years ago and they
threw in the shipping. The only wheeling problem is digging straight to the
bottom of the snow but that's the tires. All in all, very impressed with
performance, durability and ease of installation. Any other questions, just
ask.

In addition to a run-out set up with a dial indicator, a good torque
wrench is useful for torquing the ring gear bolts and bearing caps.
A spanner wrench that fits into the bearing adjuster nuts is nice too.
(This is not a "ring spanner" as our Aussie friends call an open end
wrench, BTW).

I have been going to the Jamboree in Vermont for three years now.
There is also a bigger Jamboree in Bloomsburg, PA that is put on by the
same people. I have been to seven of the Bloomsburg, PA shows out of the
last ten. If you can only make it to one Jamboree, make it to the
Bloomsburg show.
The bulk of the Jamboree's are show-n-shine / daily drivers. About 900
4X4's entered at VT and about 2700 in PA. There is also Monster Truck
Drags, Tough-Truck Competition and multi-class Mud Drags as seen on TNN.
The events run all weekend long. The shows are set up so you can come
and go as you please. You will not be able to go wheeling. It takes
place on a fairground, so basically you drive in (4X4's only), park and
check out some cool rides. If your lucky, you might see a nasty crash in
the mud pits.
You can visit the site below, for all the information that you will
need.

Since you brought up the subject, has anyone else been to Bloomsburg?

I just got my truck back from the muffler shop, and boy am I happy!!
Thanks to Nick Krest and Scott Wilson, who in earlier posts recommended
Custom Muffler in Mountain View, CA. For anyone who's looking for custom
exhaust work in the Bay Area, this shop does *great* work.
Len Mullin, the owner, fabricated a 2.5" system for my 1986 R-TE using a
Random Technologies cat and a DynoMax Super Turbo muffler.
I am REALLY happy with the results: the turbo spools up much more
quickly, and there is a very noticeable increase in power throughout the
engine's range. Since the stock wastegate setting is a rather low 8 psi,
I am now building full boost at around 2500 RPM (as opposed to 3800 RPM
with the stock exhaust). Yee-haw!
Anyway, thanks to everyone who offered advice. With this system in place,
the stage is set for some interesting future projects: an intercooler,
big bore throttle body, and variable boost controller.

Subject: O/D Off Light Flashing
To: Toy
Okay another transmission question for you guys:
I had my new (to me) transmission put in last wednesday. Been
driving it around a lot and all is well. Monday, I leave
Mississippi to drive back up to North Carolina for school. I
drove through a monsoon or two but I got here and everything ran
well...except: After filling up with gas, I would start up and
put it in gear. Instantly, my OD OFF light would start to flash.
So I turned OD off and cruised down the interstate at 55
(2700rpms okay). Then I tried turning OD on and it worked fine
and the light went off. This happened two or three times. Any
ideas? Is this like the check engine light where I can jump some
terminals and count the flashes or something? There's no mention
of it in the owners manual nor in the haynes manual. Another
thing that happened was I heard a very short, high pitched whine
for a second. Kind of like someone zipping up a really long
zipper very fast. I figured that is one of my front wheel
bearings (water, then highway speeds, then it fried). Oh well, I
plan on taking my truck in to a dealer soon (about getting valve
cover gaskets replaced) so I guess they can look at it then but I
figured if I can do some simple diagnostics on my tranny myself
it would be good. FWIW, the transmission work fine.
Thanks,
Richard

I purchased the "free flow cat" from Performance Products approx. 2 & 1/4

school from home on the interstate it had a problem. Just behind the front
mounting flange & ahead of the body of the cat the tube broke clean in half.
Not sure why, ir how long it has been stressed/cracked (no sound evidence
before this), but I just wanted to put this out there to anyone who might be
interested in this product.
By the way, $20 at Midas fixed me up, but makes me mad I could have done it

I have been considering these tires. Can you answer a few questions:
1) where did you get appropriate wheels?
NG-> (Look at http://www.dunloptire.com/tires/ltruck_cp.html)
|From Les Schwab (a big chain) in Portland, OR. They were takeoffs, meaning
they were removed from a new 4Runner that was upgrading to wider or mag wheels.
They were hard to find. Look for a tire dealer which deals regularly with a
local Toyota dealer, upgrading the stock wheels on their inventory.
Since I'm mounting narrow tires, factory "styled steel" 16X7 rims are fine.
The bolt pattern is the same but you may need different lug nuts.
2) I was concerned the load rating might be too high for a Toy, and hence give
a really rough ride. Is this a problem?
NG-> Too soon to tell. Since the tire is overkill for sturdiness I'm thinking
I can run lower pressure if necessary. The dealer put in 40 PSI, already below
max, and said to try it. One on the one trip I've taken they seemed a little
firmer than the stock 31" with alloys but you had to be interested to notice.
3) Did you need a lift to fit them?
NG-> No, they look OK for 3-4 inches of suspension travel anyway. I'm thinking
they may rub at the bump stops but I mostly drive snow covered roads where
that's rare. If you've got any lift it will help.
Can you keep us informed about how you like these? Thanks
NG-> At least they seem to be quiet.
The other option I'm considering is a Swamper TSL radial 31x9.5x15
(if I can find somewhere to get them siped)
- --- end of quote ---
NG-> I found a Les Schwab store near Portland that would do it. (This was when
I was looking at BFG MTs). He suggested siping only 1/3 the tread depth to
start, then redoing it every time they were rotated, to minimize chunking of
the lugs. I had first been discouraged by Sears, who said it's only for semi
trucks. It does void the tire warranty.

side) and only added two inches of lift (one inch straight out from the
hub), then there's only about a 1/2 inch decrease in lock to lock
space. With a 2" lift, thre shouldn't be any rubbing.
Am I wrong here?

you'll used BFG 33X9.5 MT ? Will they fit w/ only 2" of lift?

I tried these on a stock '97 Tacoma extra cab; it was no go with too
tight
clearance in the fender wells at 30-degree turns.

Sounds good enough but you are not making the wheel well larger all the way
around, just bringing it up, so the effect isn't quite like you said.

What got confused in our combined messages, is the other guy had the lift,
while my truck is stock. He may very well do all right with the 33s and a 2"
lift. I was throwing in a perhaps off-topic data point.

Subject: Whining T-Case
To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
The T-Case on my '89 4Runner (154,000 miles) occasionally whines when in
2H. So far I've been able to stop it by putting it in 4H and then back
into 2H (while stopped). There is also a slight vibration, but I'm not
sure if it is the T-case or the new 4.88 gears. I know it's not the
drive line or U-joints, since I just had the joints replaced and the
driveline balanced.
Is this something I should be concerned about? What would be causing it
and is it an easy fix?
Thanks for the input.
