Keep in mind if you plan to do any mods they are very limited to
non-existant. There are a couple of suspension lifts available but as of
yet no gear options. Has anyone heard if a locker or LSD is available for
the front? I haven't heard of any.

 Jason,
<> A neighbor and I replace the cluch on my '90 4Runner about a month ago. I
was kind of apprehensive about doing the work, but my neighbor (ex-GM
mechanic) was pretty confident. We did it in his garage (he has a tank and
air tools). It was actually surprisingly easy, just time consuming. For the
most part, we followed the directions in the Chilton's Manual. Since we
didn't have a lift, we put the truck up on 4 jack stands (highest setting to
give us enough clearance to move around underneath). We undid all the
required bolts and disconnected all the appropriate lines and wires. We put
two floor jacks under the tranny (front and back) and used them to raise and
lower the tranny. Once the tranny is off, changing the clutch and TO bearing
was easy. The hardest parts were getting to the bolts on the starter and the
two at the top of the bell housing.
By the way, we put on a Downey SuperClutch. My old clutch (86,000) was
just about completely smooth! Wow, what a difference. The SC has twice the
clamping power of the stock clutch (when it was new!). My truck felt like it
actually had more power. I can actually lay rubber on a standing start (I
mean SCREEEECH!). I didn't know the ole V6 had it in her!!!
If you want more detailed info, drop me a line!

 Hey all,
 I'm looking into getting a 4x4 in about 18 months and I'm
interested in the older 4Runner (pre-'89 hardtop convertible). I was
wondering if anyone could give me a quick rundown of the models made
 before '89.
 Thanks,

To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" I got M Dynomax Super Turbo from local muffler shop (speedy muffler) for
$116 installed ( Meineke wants $176 installed). They special ordered the
item for me. Well worth it since the Generic non performance replacement is
 also around $100 installed.
If I remember it correctly Ken Emmanuel has a custom system made around
 that price.
As for tornado engine management I have experience with the old corolla 4K
engine and the 4AG engine. In the 4K engine it make a noticeable
improvement but in the 4AG it doesn't make any difference.
It seems if the engine have a low intake efficiency it will help but with
modern engine I doubt it. If the salesman say this will make the same
effect as K&N filter I agree with him since that was also what I felt in my
 experience.
I don't have any experience with 22R engine but I would expect more
noticeable difference in 22R than in 22RE engine.

It's not really a fan, It's just there to put turbulence in the air
 charge
entering the intake manifold. I'm not sure how/why/if it works but you
could Fabricate one yourself for a lot cheaper.

 - --- end of quote ---
Yes, I posted this a couple of weeks ago. From the picture it appears to be a
bevel-gear type, the same engineering approach as the TrueTrac, though they
didn't state the torque transfer characteristics. Not to ignore the
possibility it's a repackaged True-Trac. There was some vague statement about
installation being straightforward. Clearly it at least involves replacing the
"spider gears" and carrier, and resetting the R&P clearance.

no idea how to fix rear springs are so soft if you craw under the truck
and twist the drive shaft the rear end moves up and down that where most
of the free play in the drive train is coming from.talked to the dealer

Charles, unfortunately it is true that the great state of Colorado is
working on a bill that will in effect outlaw _any_ suspension
changes. From what I read about the bill's initial draft version,
any change is against the new law _period_. This bill affects not
only modified 4bys, but low-riders, street rods, street machines and
even the poor rancher that adds a set of "add a leafs" to his work
 truck.
A few years ago CSP decided to cite me for driving an illegal
vehicle. I decided to fight the ticket and hired a lawyer. After
inspecting my vehicle, "they" found that my Toy pickup had a 5"
lift (springs front and back with no blocks), modified steering,
double shocks, dual steering stabilizer, and 35" tires (all of which
will be illegal under the proposed law).
Common Sense prevailed, the truck was pronounced legal and the ticket
thrown out. We can only hope that common sense prevails again and if
the bill becomes law it is modified.

I happened to have an old spare on a stock chrome rim sitting next to the
scale in my garage. The aired-up combo weighs 54 lbs. Dunlops web site
doesn't list a weight for their tires, but I found a firestone tire in that
size weighs 25 lbs, so figure in the neighborhood of 30 lbs for the wheel,
 give or take a couple.

 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
OK, guys, it occurs to me that I might be confusing a couple of these
 transmissions.
The original 81-83 5-speed trans was the bad one; weak bearings, problems
with fifth gear, maybe some weak synchros? Don't remember completely..
Toyota made major mods in 1983-1/2 to solve this problem. I thought this
was when they came out with the trans with the separate bellhousing.
Sounds like you guys are saying that all they did was remachine the old
one-piece case for a larger input bearing and maybe some other changes.
Is this correct, that they only changed the one-pice case in 83-1/2?
If so, when did they come out with the two-piece case like the '86 trans
I put into my '81 truck? I have been told that the '86 trans was
designed to hold up to V6 power; therefore much stronger than the older
 one.

Decided that this was a good idea, so the next morning after I got back in
town I called my local toy dealer Mike

this guy couldnt give me info on nothing. After explaining to him for 20
min. that its the first bearing inside the bellhousing he told me id have
to come in and show him on the microfish. Im gonna pull the old one and try
to get it from a bearing house.
