 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
I'm looking for some opinions from 1998 Tacoma 4x4 owners. I currently
own a 1993 Toyota 4x4 Extended Cab V6. It currently has 50k miles on it
and the head gasket and timing chain were replaced at 45k. This was done
free of charge after I received a notice from my dealer.
I am thinking of selling this truck and buying a new 1998 Limited Tacoma.
Trucks like mine are selling in Phoenix from 12,500 - 15,000 (according
to Truck Trader). Edmunds retail is $14,410. My truck has 31" tires, A/C,
CC, CD player, tint, auto locking hubs, and is an automatic. This truck
 is rock solid.
I've looked at the 1998 Limited and really like this truck. The problem
is, I've read some negative things concerning tranny shifting problems
(I'm thinking of getting a 5 speed), dashboard rattles, and vibration
problems. On the other hand Four Wheeler magazine awarded it their truck
 of the year.
I realize that owners with problems are more vocal than owners without. I
also take magazine reviews with a grain of salt. I would ask my dealer to
let me have a 1998 for a couple of days to test drive. I've bought
several autos from him and I don't think this would be a problem. So what
do the 1998 Tacoma owners suggest I do. Keep the 1993 or buy the 1998?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

 To: Mark,
I have a 97 V6 Xtra Cab 4x4 Tacoma and it has been great! Not the greatest
on gas.. but lately I have been getting 19.5 mpg. which I think is pretty
good. I have had NO problems with my Tacoma. BUT, I also had a 81 and a 89
that I beat the hell out of and had zero problems with them too.
 Good Luck!

without biasing that I prefer the style truck you have to the Tacoma.
The Tacoma has some advantages, it weighs almost 400 lbs less than
your truck, with an additional 40 HP, has rack and pinion steering,
more wheel travel, and a smoother ride. However, your truck has
far fewer complaints against it compared to the Tacoma. The 3.0 V6
IS quieter than the 3.4L, and the truck itself IS quieter. Your
torsion bar suspension has proven itself to be very rugged, many
Tacoma owners complain of soft suspension and there is a TSB for
the front and rear suspensions of Tacomas. Also, the frame on Tacomas
are not boxed behind the front mount of the rear leaf springs.
Tacomas also have TSBs for noisy and unbalanced tires. A friend
at NUMMI said Tacomas have some General Motors parts on them to
raise the Tacoma's U.S. content. (aka the failing GM alternators
in the Corollas), but I have no proof of this.
The Tacoma is fun to drive because of the power to weight, but I
feel that your generation truck is more refined and more reliable.
(I think I am going to open a can of worms with this one.) :-)

To: Toy4x4@tlca.org>>> I'm looking for some opinions from 1998 Tacoma 4x4 owners. I currently> Well, I have a '95 Taco with 45k miles on it. No dash rattles,
although it does have a buzz somewhere near my left ear over some
surfaces. The only vibration problems were out of balance tires,
but note that the rack & pinion steering will provide more feedback
and harmonic vibration over certain road surfaces. Until it was
repaved, the interstate in front of my dealer did this :-)
The TSB was to correct mainly under spec'd shocks on the
early Taco. The change to more leaves in the rear springs was to
soften the ride a bit - the early Taco's have a habit of jumping
out from under the driver in turns with bumps. Still, I prefer
that to the nose high attitudes I see some S-10's and Rangers
displaying (granted - I have no idea what they are carrying).

Just curious, but why do you think the original throwout bearing lasted
only 50K miles? Also, if it was defective maybe it's covered under
 warranty, perhaps?

FYI, I phoned Summit Racing today and they said they no longer carry the
DynoMax Super Turbo for the Toy. They suggested to phone DynoMax direct.
Anyone have any alternative sources for the muffler? Also, while taking
 to a local distributor (www.hypertech-inc.com) about purchasing a K+N
Performance kit he recommended a "Tornado Air Management System". The
salesman said for under a $100.00 it would give the same performance, if
not better as the K+N Perf kit. I have never heard of this item. It
appears to be some sort of fan that installs between the air box and
throttle body inside of the air intake tube. Anyone have any comments on
 this?

be stranded, as I understand it. Yes, there will be signs.
The 3.4L developes leaks (if it will!) at the back of the
cylinder head. Since (apparently) all of the leaks have been
external, you will start to see a redish splotch under the
vehicle when it is parked. Also, as it is an external leak,
it won't damage the motor (as long as you catch it, and do
NOT run it out of water (-: ). Anti-freeze inside the motor
is a Bad Thing(tm), but an external leak simply tends to be
 a bit messy (and smelly).

I am getting ready to purchase a limited slip diff. for the rear of my 93 V6.
I was wondering how many bananas you think(or know) it is? I think I want the
Detroit Tru-Trac but I just heard from somebody on this list that there is
also a TRD LSD out there, and It's only $300!!! Can this be true? What
install and set up parts will we need? Can someone explain the basic steps we
will have to go through to finish without too many headaches, nothing
detailed, just so we will have an idea of what to expect.
 Thank you very much

Oh yeah.. I would consider installing the Pro-Comp Stage 2 lift about a 2 or
2.5 banana job, on a scale of 1-5
