From: Rick Subject: 4Runner SoftTop?
To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" Andy,
I too am interested in a soft top for my 4Runner. Unfortunately my
research has turned up only the Kayline as a full convertible top. I don't
want to drill any holes in the body-work so that leaves the Kayline out,
unless I develop my own fast-track system. There is also a new bikini top
on the market that uses all the factory bolt holes and requires no
drilling. It comes with a tonneau portion for the cargo area too. My
thoughts were that this top plus waterproof seat covers may do the trick.
It would still probably be miserable for passengers in a good thunderstorm
though. It is available with really dorky-looking NASCAR inspired
passenger retention netting too...Tropical Tops 28965 Aerie Road., Valley

From: "Dan Smith" Subject: 90 Tranny & Transfer Question
To: Sheldon asked about gear ratios & crawler case for a 90 tranny. As far as I
know the gear ratios are as follows for the tranny: 1st - 3.93; 2nd - 2.33;
3rd - 1.91; 4th - 1.0; 5th - .83. The factory transfer case has a 2.28:1
ratio. Check the transfer case before you go too much further as my 90
transfer case (4-Runner) is a chain drive unit. It and the tranny cannot be
used in a dual transfer setup. Marlin recommended finding a tranny &
transfer case from a 86-87 turbo 4-wheel drive truck. Hope this helps ( Jim,
please correct me if I am wrong about the gear ratios!).

on Alta Vista for "Toyota 4Runner"
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.:
I'm British, but very recently moved out to Spain. Menorca is one of
the Balearic Islands - in the Medterranean Sea a few hundred miles
off the East coast of the Spanish mainland. The 4Runner is my first
4x4 vehicle (well, I had a Subaru Impreza but that's not the same
kind of 4x4!). Bought it in England before for the move out here -
we did the approx 1000 mile journey from England in three days, with
no troubles other than the engine deciding to idle at 2000 rpm for a
while, but that stopped after an hour or so.
The 4Runner originally came from Switzerland but had been in England
for a few years (and now it's in Spain!). AFAIK it's all orginal
apart from the alloy wheels. The 2.4i engine is adequate, but I
confess to being a little envious of you 3 Litre V6 owners! It's
done about 85,000 miles. It's white with sweeping "Starsky and
Hutch" style red/orange/brown stripes down the sides. I don't know
if they're original (can anyone tell me if that's standard stuff?).
Can't say that I like them particularly, but I don't think I could
remove them without going for a full respray (unless anyone can
advise me?)
The engine seems fine, there's some nasty noises from the front
(UVs?) when on full lock. The rear end is sagging a little, not too
bad though. The body is sound other than a a few paint bubbles and
rust spots on the rear wheel arches.
Being inexperienced off-road, I spent a few hours on a course in
England. There had been heavy rain a earlier in the day and
the ground was basically a mixture of clay and mud. I was pretty
amazed at what the 4R could handle, but I had to be pulled out of
trouble by one of the more sure-footed vehicles on several occasions.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and came home with the car almost
intact (lost the rear fog lamp which was stupidly mounted below the
bumper - the bumber ended up slightly bent, as did the front
valence). It took me weeks to get all the mud off the car.
Now that we here in Menorca, I'm really looking forward to driving
with the top removed once the Spring comes, and I'm thinking of
buying a soft-top kit (it doesn't rain much, but when it does it
pours!) There's lots of great terrain here for potential off-roading,
but I've yet to make contact with any clubs or other enthusiasts and
I don't fancy trying anything much on my own! Apart from anything
else I'm not sure what the laws are here about where you can and
can't go. [I guess most of the people on this list are USA/Canada,
but are there by any chance any others here in Menorca?]

Anyone have any thoughts on the pros/cons of the poly body mounts?

about 40% of the time.

some solenoid or sometime like that? I have reset

then starting it back up) and has worked. Sound

The Helicoils are the best fix. I've also drilled and tapped them the
next size larger in standard thread. You have to drill out the manifold
a bit and tap the block carefully. Don't drill deeper than it was to
start with and try to get all the shavings out. There are some spots
where a right angle drill is the only thing that will get in the spot.
You can rent them for a few $ per day ( i think it is $4/4 hours) Well
worth the time and money if you don't have one. Next time you have the
head off ( on a Toyota?! ) you can do a better job if necessary ( if
welding/ helicoil is needed or you were a little crooked!)
Hope this helps!

Be very careful as the banjo bolts that hold it on must be tightened
very carefully to prevent leaks. Although much more work, it is
probably easier to remove the starter before changing the fuel filter
than to try to work around it.

Sheldon, the longer your (easy) on it the longer it will live, in one of
the petersons mags they took 2 pistons 1 new the other used and baked them
for a period of time,
taking measurements after the bake they found the "new"
piston was so distorted that it was unusable. the used piston was fine. Id
drive "normal" for the first 500 miles
then change the oil and consider it broken in.

To: "mail@UUCP {Toy4x4@tlca.org}" I have alwaays "tried" to take it easy for 500 miles, change the oil, go
a little harder on it for a second 500, then change oil, check torques,
adjust valves. Then go like nuts!!! :)))
The main thing to do is do everythiing smoothly and with plenty of warmup
time ( I know youre in FL!) and don't run at the same rpm for long
periods of time. You can set up resonances and wear/ break rings that
way. I'm talking about an hour or so at the same rpm. Usually not a
problem.
Now a funny story...I was breaking in a new big bore engine in a VW
beetle years ago on a 7 hour trip up to college. It was a screamer and
it was hard to not get on it and to keep the revs varied on a long trip.
After about 5 hours, an orange GTO " the Judge" came along side of me
and was checking out my really low, tricked out VW, with these "wierd oil
cooler things" on the back. He kept punching it and egging me on. I'm
doing my proper 55 and well, what the heck! Down to 3rd gear and we
were gone! This was on an interstate and we were going at it around 100
when the State Trooper appears on the side of the road. Doh! I was in
the right lane and he in the left. He being all orange and chrome got
pulled over and I in this little black beetle just kept driving ( slowly
again!) The engine was fine and so was my driving record. I was so
worried that i may have trashed something. But no problem...
Have fun!

I have always done about a 100 miles or so on a rebuilt block but should
it be more? I already drove it for about 5 miles today making sure not
to go over 2500 rpm and noticed a huge increase in low end, which makes
me want to see how well it works at 3000+ :)
- --- end of quote ---
100 miles might be enough, but it should be driving dedicated to just breaking
in. Keep RPMs over 2000 but speed low, not over 50, and accelerate over and
over from 2000 up, at about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. You want to work the engine
but not stress it. Going up over 3000 is good, as long as it's at a modest
speed. Avoid staying at the same speed/RPM.

Mine had the same problem.
Check the wires underneath on the rear drivers side. They go from the
body to the rear door. I found that a few of mine were missing some
insulation. The ones where the copper was OK, I just made sure that
they were dry (hairdryer) and then taped 'em up (electrical tape).
The ones with frayed copper, I cut, stripped, added a same gauge
jumper, and some shrink tubing.
This seemed to help the rear window defrost and the rear window goes
up a bit faster now.
Hope this helps,

Some 60-series Toyes had a very intressting front leaf packs. They had
this thick overload leaf at the bottom, that went from the axle and
backward only. I've always thought it was to reduce the risk of violent

versions.... Sigh.... For the want of an HJ60 and an HJ75 trayback....
