 Truck & 4Runner, Electrical Wiring Diagram, 1987 Model.
 Although the repair manual includes several fold-out wiring
 diagrams, I assume this additional booklet (88 pgs. + several
 fold-out diagrams) offers greater detail.
 Both in great shape, no rips (given my admittedly brief examination),
 no grease.
 Repair Manual sells new for $105.22 (it's a BEAST)
 Electrical Wiring Diagram sells new for $12.88.

 Nope, it is a 22R. That number is the original part number for a 22R
 block. The '20' indicates that it is an '84. Blocks of a later
 manufacturing date will have higher numbers such as 50 or 53, 60, etc.
 There should be a milled pad on the block near the dipstick that will
 have 22R stamped on it, no other numbers.

 To:  For the past few years a group from work has been making an annual trek to
 Death Valley.  Some of these folks have moved on and left the area.  I
 wanted to post the trip to the "list" to see if we can get a few more
 vehicles for this year.  This is a good family run.  The trails are easy and
 suitable for stock rigs (except for one trail which may be a side trip this
 year.)  We will be staying in motels so bring the wife and kids.  The trip
 will offer lots of beautiful scenery and exploration of ghost towns and
 mines.
 When:   Martin Luther King weekend January 16-19th.
 Why January?  It is a great time to visit Death Valley and some
 people get Monday off (insert smile.)
 Below is the tentative itinerary:
 Friday - Travel day to the rendevous point.  The Econo Lodge in Ridgecrest,
 CA will be the meeting place.  From the Bay Area it is about a 6 - 7 hour
 drive.  From the South land it will be much shorter.  I plan to leave the
 Bay Area around noon (1/2 off from work) and arrive in the evening.
 Saturday - Leave Ridgecrest early.  Much of Saturday will actually be spent
 in Panamint Valley.
 1st stop -  Ballarat ghost town and meet "Ballarat" Don the mayor, sheriff,
 postmaster and only resident of Ballarat.  There is a general store with
 maps of the area and other neat stuff including pictures of Surprise Canyon.
 There is also the only flushing toilet in the area.
 2nd stop - The (in)famous Surprise Canyon.  No we are not going up to the
 top only to the first waterfall. Some landowner has been trying to close the
 canyon.  Does anyone know if Surprise is open or closed?  (Last year
 Ballarat Don said it was open but there were signs saying it was closed.)
 If it is closed we will continue on.
 3rd stop - Travel south and enter Death Valley through Goler Wash.  There is
 a lot to see along this trail.  One interesting site is Barker Ranch where
 Charles Manson was captured.  There are also a few mines in the area.
 Once we are on the main road we will head for the small town of Beatty, NV a
 nd spend the night at one of the small hotel/casinos.  For the venturesome
 you can try your luck at the tables and slot machines.
 Sunday - Leave Beatty
 1st trail - Titus Canyon.  This trail is awesome in its beauty and rich with
 history.  There is the town and story of Leadfield and its ruins, the
 colorful vistas, and at the end of the trail the high canyon walls.
 Next - This is where we have two options and may split up into two groups.
 One group head for Scotty's castle and the Ubehebe Crater.  2nd group would
 be those who want to try a more difficult trail up Echo Canyon.  To do this
 trail a traction device (locker or LSD) is recommended.  There is at least
 one challenging spot on this trail.
 After, the two groups will head for Lone Pine, CA.  (Those who live in
 Southern CA can opt to head home.)  We will spend the night in Lone Pine.
 Monday - travel home.
 Sorry for the long post but in the past this has been a great run.  If you
 are from the Bay Area you can expect around trip of about 1,000 miles.
 Some items to bring - camera and lots of film, extra gas (haven't needed any
 yet), water.
 Those who are interested email me directly and I will send you address and
 phone #'s for the motels.  I'll also keep track of who is all going.

 I have stock muffler that has decided to give up the ghost and am thinking
 about an aftermarket exhaust.  The question I have is about the noise some
 make.  I've heard some exhausts that are a bit loud and sound as if someone
 tried to make a inline 4 or v-6 sound like a 302 or something.  I would
 like a exhaust system that will give a decent power boost and keep the
 noise from being overbearing.  Is this a reality?

 I just went to a new custom exhaust system on my truck (22R-E).  I
 decided
 to go with 1.75" exhaust because SOMETIMES (with emphasis on the
 SOMETIMES)
 2" exhaust on a 4 cylinder will make popping sounds when decelerating
 and
 the engine is at lower RPMs.  I used a Dynomax muffler.  It definately
 has
 more power than it used to, but mainly because my old exhaust pipe had
 some
 bad bends in it.  The best thing though is the sound.  It's 1 db louder
 than
 stock, which isn't at all noticeable inside, but it sounds a little
 deeper
 and better outside.  It also doesn't making popping sounds when
 decelerating.
 I am very happy with this new system.

 I know that this question has been asked 1million times at least on this
 list but the subject of upgrading to larger tires is on my mind right
 now.
 I have read on the off-road.com toy page all the tech stuff on r&p and
 lockers,diffs etc.  It sounds to me like I would have to re-gear at a min
 cost of $1500.00 and then the large tires would cost about $500.00
 mounted and balanced.  All of this to obtain an inch or so of clearence.
 Im starting to wonder if I would be better to sell my truck and try and
 find a V6 XtraCab????
 I wanted a V6 from the start,  and in my area it seems like REGARDLESS of
 V6 or 22RE that ALL TOYS setup higher than my truck.
 My skid plate under the front end says that I need a couple more inches
 of clearence.  I was considering not going farther than 30x9.5 tires but
 it seems like the standard thing for local toys is 31x10.5 with a few
 with 32's.  These are all stock trucks.
 What are the technical differences of a Toy that came OEM with 31" tires?
 vs a 4cyl Regular cab 5spd 4x4
 I cant remember who right off hand but there was another guy on here
 talking about his 4.10 4cyl stock truck with 31 tires and having NO POWER
 on the highway.  I dont wanna be in that boat.

 You don't have to pay $1500 for gears, I got mine (front and rear) for
 about $400 from 4wheel Parts and had them installed for $100, but I
 removed the dropouts.  Total investment about $500, and well worth it.
 On the other side, if you get a set of tires mounted and balanced for
 $500 you are doing pretty good.  I ran 31's for a while with stock gears
 and there was a bit of difference but if you know someone with 31's they
 might let you borrow them so that you can see for yourself.
 By the way you can expect to pay more for labor on the IFS, it is more
 work to remove the front third member, but $1500 is still a bit steep..

 scared that a Detroit locker will make me break traction cornering on an icy
 hwy, but I need it to get thru the gumbo mud in the spring and the mountain
 rocks in the summer after the snow melts.  I think I would prefer a locker
 over an LSD for the superior mud and deep snow traction. Any suggestions?

 Powertrax (1-800-LOCKERS) has *announced* electric lockers
 (Command Lockers), but this has been "back burnered" due to
 the squabbling between PowerTrax and the Detroit people with
 respect to the LockRight/EZ-Locker battle.
 So, in short, don't count on PowerTrax to do anything soon,
 but give them a call on their nickle (dime!) and *maybe* they
 will get the hint they are losing sales.

 Not a dumb question Jeff.   The PCV is very hard to find on the 3.0
 V6.   Turns out it's under the intake stuff on the passenger side of the
 engine.  I managed to change my with a LONG pair of needle nose pliers,
 and a long screwdriver.  I also had to disconnect all the hoses, and one
 bracket to get enough room in there to work on it.
 Have fun...I still have a small scar on my hand from doing mine!  :-)

 I've done this on my (ex's) '85 Toy. There's an adjustment on the top of
 the steering box, held tight with a locknut. Loosen the locknut, tighten
 the bolt to the proper amount of steering freeplay, (I measured at the
 steering wheel), then tighten the locknut again. 5-10 minute job, if
 that.
