In a message dated 97-04-21 17:25:26 EDT, you write:> EWong> Wishing he had a J**p because then the diff would'nt rust to the axle> housing> because you would have to take it apart ever weekend because it would
break.> I am gonna get it for this, but I am up for some flaming...
Why do people degrade every other vehicle on the road? We can't even say
Jeep, Chevy or Ford without substituting some of the letters with asterics,
 etc.
Do some people really hate other makes? Do they think Toyota's are the only
vehicle worth driving? I know some of you guys do this out of jest, but some
people seem to take it too far. I met one guy who swore up and down Toy's
are the best, and all athers are junk. He just happened to have a Chevy 350
under the hood. Seems like a contradiction to me. Don't yell at this, I have
nothing against mix-n-match trucks; I say use the best parts you can find,
 but watch your words.
Above, there was a comment about Jeeps breaking every weekend. Well,
any 4x4 that is used hard, and used a lot will break. Jack, how many things
did you break on the way to Moab? I just got through installing my second
R&P in the last year. Toy V6's seem to blow head gaskets left and right.
Now, what was that about Jeeps breaking all the time?
I personally own a Jeep and 2 Toyotas. I have also owned a fullsize
Chevy 4x4. I will always say that each has its pros and cons. I must say
that the Toy I have now is the best vehicle I have owned, all things
considered. I guess it just seems kinda silly to me to write J**p, or Ch*vy,
or F*rd and think Toyota is the one and only. Like Jack Alford said to me on
 another thread-
different strokes for different folks ...
 OK. Who's got the s'mores?

Check to see if the system is holding residual pressure. If not, a
problem may exist in the pressure regulator, pump, or return lines
(check for any kinked lines running from the fuel rail to back to the
 tank).

 Mike,
A couple of things to check:
 1) Coolant temperature sensor,
 2) Cold start injector and time switch--updated parts avail.
 3) Ignition timing.
Also check to see if there is excessive sludge builup in the throttle
body and throttle plate. Clean with carb. cleaner (engine off) and see
if this cures the problem. Sometimes this buildup can prevent throttle
 plate from completely closing.
 Hope this helps.

I have a regular single flair kit from Harbor Freight. I does ok, but
I am not overly impressed with the quality. I haven't seen their
double flare kits. I do have a Snap-On double flair kit so I know
they sell 'em. I think Grainger may also carry one, but they ain't
 cheap.
Sometimes you can find an auto parts store that will do double
flare brake ends for about $4 each. You gotta call around.

Agreed. Pro Rally, while virtually unknown in the USA (much like off-road

 Jerry,
If you didn't drive it very far in 4wheel drive the first time you probably
didn't hurt anything, unless something was broken already.
You might try checking (counting) your ring and pinion rations. I bought an
82 Toy for my wife a couple of years ago and after a wheelin trip discovered
that it had the stock 4.10s in the front, but someone had swaped third
members in the rear with an early (79,80) which had 4.37s.
The difference in speeds you are discribing may be a result of someone doing
 something similar.
This also happened to a friend of mine who just bought an 83, it had 4.10s in
the rear and 4.56s in the front.
Of course if you've owned this truck for a while and never had this problem
before just ignore all that gabbing I did above.
 Hoped I helped,

Subject: Grease Type For Throwout and Oil Seal Lips?
To: Toyota 4x4 List , OFFROAD What is the recommended grease type for a throwout bearing, and also
for the lips of oil seals? I've been using sta-lube general purpose
lithium grease in the past. Haynes says Moly in some places, but
doesn't seem to care in others. I've also seen reference to high
speed grease. What's the difference, and what is preferred for the
 bearing and seals?
Also, (yeah, I know I'm meticulus):
 1. If lithium grease gets on an oil seal, can it just be wiped off
and moly applied for assembly? I've heard mixing them is not a good
 idea.
 2. Will cleaning an oil seal with brake cleaner damage it?
 Sorry for the novice questions,

The Knock Sensor on my 90 v6 4runner is bad.
My check engine light came on. I ran a diagnostic
and came up with code#52,(knock sensor) . I took it in
to my dealer, they told me it would be a very expensive
repair, since it is located on the block right in the middle,
under all the intake stuff. My options are to fix it $$$$$ or
live with it. Will the engine preform like this ? Can I realy
live with this condition, if so can I bi-pass this sensor so my
check engine light won't come on?
Some background: This engine has a new block ,1200 miles old,
the intake system, fuel injectors, throttle body etc. have been cleaned
and are as good as new. The tech at the dealer also told me he could
not set the timing because the throttle position sensor was bad.
Otherwise it runs ok, gas mileage is fair for city driving, around
 15mpg .
Any insight will be a big help.

My truck has acted funny ever since its oil change here about three days
 ago.
It seems like it is idling louder, and like its a little sluggish.
It is sort of bothering me!
On another note, I am also having another problem with the brakes. I
think that it is the rotors. (Not sure! PLEASE EDUCATE ME) When going
about 50MPH , I push the clutch in and slowly start in on the brake. The
WHOLE FRONT END starts a violent SHIMMY.
When I got my truck 2 months ago, it was in BETTER than show room
condition. It would probably have came out ahead of a new tacoma in an
 inspection.
 Now I am having trouble.
YES I have had it in the woods but I was not hard enough on it to cause
 this kind of trouble.
Granted that this was the FIRST stick shift that I have ever drove. I
didnt think that the three days of driving that it took me to learn the
clutch would wear it out. But yesterday I took it down to the local
mechanic and let him drive it and it said that the pressure plate and fly
wheel would have to be replaced soon.
This sounds like crap to me, I thought that my little Toyota was
supposed to out last and be a better vehicle than the competition. Is
this guy wrong or is my little Toy doing me dirty already?
I was expecting the norm, you know Keeping all the fluids changed,
keeping everything greased, and keeping all the filters changed. But
having clutch problems and rotors all ready. What going on, Am I doing
 something wrong??????????

Mine was also a pain to remove, I tried slip-joint pliers and a claw hammer.
I had my valve cover off since I was adjusting the valves, and I think that
helped as far as leverage and position. What I did was place the valve cover
on a clean surface (gasket side down), stood on it, and used the claw end of
the hammer with a small block of wood under it to pry on the PCV valve. This
eventually worked, but took awhile! You should probably replace the PCV
valve gasket also...mine was old, hard, cracked, and leaking, and was
probably the reason I had such a hard time removing the valve. The new
gasket makes the valve easier to install and remove. Good luck.

Actually ours are MUCH more difficlut to remove, we were talking about
PCV on the 3.0 V6. The entire intake manifold must be removed to get the
right valve cover off due to clearance and whatnot. I don't have a clue
as to why they didn't arrange the engine so the PCV was in the other
valve cover. Maybe Jim has an idea.?

 Subject: Pilot Bearing Hydraulic-Out Worked
To: Toyota 4x4 List I used a 5/16 craftsman 1/4" drive socket coupled with the 3/8" to
1/4" adapter (to plug the socket hole), although the socket seemed a
little loose to work at first inspection. The trick seemed to be to
really make sure the crank was packed, and the *socket* too.
It took about 5 full seats of the socket to pull it completely out.
After each full drive in of the socket, the bearing will pull out only
about 1/16" to 1/8". Repack the crank and the socket each time.
Only took about 15 minutes after gathering all the parts and prepping
 the crank.
BTW, looks like Daikon clutch kits come with the OEM bearings (Nakki,
I think). The disc springs are heavier duty than the Aisin disc I
pulled, and it is plenty thick. The pressure plate fingers look
 perhaps 1/64" less thick.

 Subject: Slip Joint Play...
 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
I think I already know the answer to this one, but I'll ask anyways... tonight
when I was trying to diagnose a vibration problem in my rear, I found that the
slip joint has play in it... not rotationally, but I can actually move the shaft
up & down a bit, and see the 2 pieces moving.... My guess is that it's time for
a new slip joint. Anyone know how much one costs? I can't believe that the
people who did the driveshaft lengthening could have overlooked it - It seemed
fine when the joint was totally compressed (probably since it was using splines
 that hardly get used?)
Also, is there supposed to be any play on the output flange of the transfer
case??? (this might just be because of the driveshaft... I think there might be
 a tiny bit.)

 teeth out!!!)
P.S. I was cleaning the grage, and came across the following parts that I no
longer need Make an offer and it's yours (parts in Kansas City):
22R head / intake/carb (in excellent shape - head is real clean)
 22R air filter housing
 '84-88 RF Fender (good)
 '84-88 L Door shell (good)
'84-?? Radiator ok shape (didn't leak when removed, but has some soft fins)
(also '85 chevy a/c rotary compressor, 10SI alt., P/S pump, Real Good Computer
controlled Q-jet and Computer - from donor vehicle)

Defenders don't count; not enough creature comforts to qualify in my book.
For a rolling pre-run party, you need:
 - 1 rented 4-door 4wd vehicle with all the insurance you can buy;
 - 2 12V plug-in coolers;
 - "Skillfully acquired" official door stickers and parking
 permits from any govt agency;
 - Moronic bobble-head dolls or something like that to annoy
 other vehicles;
 - 4+ people who laugh at the stupidest jokes imaginable;
 - GPS receiver, laptop, cell or satellite phone, camcorder,
 cameras, etc.
With this equipment, you will need to cover at least 300 miles a day, none
of it paved, and not strangle each other. The Montero has the most room and
the plushest ride for such duties. If I were BUYING, tho, it'd be an FJ80
 first.
 Sorry for the tangent.

 Subject: Torque Specs Needed
To: Toyota 4x4 List Does anyone know the torque specs for the front tranny bearing
 retainer on an 88 4Runner 5 speed transmission with a 22RE 4 cylinder
motor (I think it's a G57 tranny) and the motor rear main oil seal
retainer? My haynes doesn't list either of them.
8MM specs dictate about 15 ft/lbs. Haynes lists 69 inch lbs. for
similar sized bolts (6 cylinder rear main seal retainer). This is
only about 6 ft/lbs. Seems too small.
 TIA,
 Scott

Starting in late 1983, Toyota went back to the removable bellhousing.
Also, some time in 1984 they ugraded to the larger bearing in ther front
cluster. 1985 and newer models are the best of those years.>The truck cranks fine(22R carb) but will not idle until the engine temp is>normal operating temp. and you kill the engine and let sit for 30 sec. to 5>min, then when you crank it up idles just fine.
Could it be a sticky choke?.....I can't remember how they're set up........

One other problem I have is a strange one...
The truck cranks fine(22R carb) but will not idle until the engine temp
is normal operating temp. and you kill the engine and let sit for 30
sec. to 5 min, then when you crank it up idles just fine.
 Any thought greatly appreciated
 Steve
Is the choke functioning properly? i.e., does the choke plate shut when
the accelerator pedal is depressed on a cold engine? Sometimes the choke
plates gum up and do not close. Also, check the choke linkage. A few
shots of carb. cleaner (spray) will take care of these problems. Fast
idle O.K.? Should be set to about 2,500 rpm with the choke pull-off
(diaphram on back of carb.)and EGR vacuum lines disconnected and
plugged. Check the idle speed setting as well (700 rpm).
