I did not get cruise control on my 1996 Tacoma 4WD. Now I want to add
it. What is the process? Where can I find the part? How much will I
have to spend? Has anyone added an aftermarket cruise control?
 Thanks,

I don't know if they still do it, but the Toyota dealers used to install
"aftermarket" cruise controls in the vehicles. My 1989 4x4 has a non-Toyota
cruise control that was dealer installed. Call em up and ask em!

Then you've never had a '79-83. In my personal experience, I lost 2
transmissions within a 50,000 mile period; the first at 75k, the second at
125k. And when I say "lost," I don't mean the clutch. I mean everything
except for the case had to be replaced.

In response to my comment concerning the stock 5-speed transmissions
used in the '82 Toyota PU. " IMHO it is a guaranteed fact that the
five speed will self destruct eventually"
 Jared Rogers wrote:
Don't you mean automatic transmissions? 5-speeds are bulletproof in
my experience. It's always the slush-boxes that seem to give people
problems. I used to have a 73' Corolla and I had something like 300k
miles on it. The 5-speed NEVER gave me any problem. Sure, the clutch
and those components are prone to failure, but not usually the rest.
What do you base this statement on?
Jared, I don't doubt that you had 300k problem free miles on your '73
Corolla's 5-speed transmission. The transmission that I am
talking about is also a 5-speed; Toyota only offered two
transmissions that year in its 4x4 pickups: the L45 four-speed and
the L52 5-speed. In my response to Chris' post, I am talking about
the transmission in his '82 PU. This transmission is the L52
which is quite different from the '73 Corolla 5-speed.
You ask, "What do you base this statement on?" In 1981, Toyota
introduced the SR5 version of the 4x4 pickup. Part of the SR5
package was a 5-speed transmission and now for the first time the
Toyota 4x4 pickup had a 5-speed (this 5-speed is also different
from the 5-speed used in the 2x pickups). After having the
transmission in production for all of the '81 line and most of the
'82 line, these transmissions started to suffer wide-spread bearing
failure on the input shafts. If left unattended the input shaft
bearings disintegrate, and sometimes the pieces would unfortunately
cause more internal damage. In late 1982, Toyota redesigned the
transmission case, the input shaft bearing (making it larger by
approximately 9%) and improved the lubrication design of the
transmission. Toyota officially ignored the problem for awhile, but
eventually (for a while) offered to pay for a partial rebuilt of the
transmission. Toyota even has an "upgrade" rebuilt kit for this
 transmission.
The redesigned transmissions seemed to last longer, but Toyota used a
newer and stronger 5-speed in its new model in 1984.
Like I said, I don't doubt that your Corolla was trouble free for
300k miles, but the original L52 transmissions were weak by
 design.

How did you find out about the Toyota 4x4 Mailing List:
I was checking out the SWFWDA & 4X4 NOW sites when I found a link to
 you.
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.:
I have been into 4x4's since 1978 and seriously into 4Wheeling since
1986. I have belonged to a local 4x4 club "Oklahoma Trailchasers" for 7
years and served as editor of our monthly newsletter during 1995. We
 are a member of SWFWDA.
Until about 6 months ago I was wheeling my daily driver, a 1988 SWB
Silverado. It has now been turned into a 4Wheeler Puller. You probably
don't care about my past ride since this is a Toyota page but you have a
new convert joining your ranks! Here it is anyway I did, or had done,
numerous modifications to it during it's 8 years of service. 2" Rancho
Suspension Lift, 9000RS Shocks, Warn 9000i, custom fabricated front/rear
bumpers and nerf bars, Auburn LSD in rear diff and open front with
 32x11.50 BFG/MT's.
I have been looking for a Toy P'up for quite awhile and one has come up
for sale from a long time friends uncle. He is the second owner and has
had it for 12 years that I know of. It is bone stock and in very good
condition. I have long term plans for it to make it into an extremely
capable rock crawler/goo slinger. I found some very interesting info on
 some of your links.
Most of the areas that I have wheeled in are in eastern and south
eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. I was fortunate enough last year
to attend the SWFWDA Winter meeting in Las Cruces, NM. There is some
killer wheeling down there! Some of the other areas I have wheeled in
include Clayton Lake, Honubia, Robbers Cave, Poteau, and Hot Springs.
Well I'm sure I've rambled on long enough now so I'll sign off. I look
forward to getting and sharing info. with your organization.

To: " - (052)furnival (a) citizen.infi.net" Hmm - I have an 88/89 so it might be a tad different; but it should be similar
The clips (as you probably already discovered) are spaced in two rows -
accross the top and bottom edges of hte grille. On my truck; ONE is held in
by a phillips (#1) screw; the rest are the "slot" clips.
Using a flag bladed screw driver - the "biggest" that will still fit in the
 access "well",
place the blade of the screw driver into the slot and "twist" gently - approx
 45deg;
CW if I recall correctly. While holding this position, "gently" tug on the
 grille near the
screw driver. It should "pop" out the 1/4" to clear the clip; the clip stays
 attached to
the grille; so you also have to pull the screw driver back as you do this. Work
 from
one side/corner to the opposite side. It helps to start from next to the one
 held in by
the phillips scew - it already "loose" then.
Take it out completely - its easier (unless the fog lights are in the way :) )
You can then access the head lights REAL easy.
On my grille; Ive found that with "practice" and a extra hole or two drilled
 into the
grille - I can remove the headlight retainer ring w/o removing the grille. Dont
 drop
 the retainer ring phillips screws!
 Good Luck
 EWong

I have an 81 PU and it does the same thing when I start it up. It runs at
1500-2200rpm for about 5min and drops down real low to a rough idle at
around 500-900rpm. I am not tooworried about it now but I plan on doing

I recently purchased the NWOR 3.5 inch lift kit(front springs, rear
add-a-leafs) which is described as "soft riding". I was impressed at the
complete-ness of the system(spring bushings, sway bar drop, brake
equalizer bracket etc.) and the price of 150.00 bucks. I bought the kit
to replace the Rancho lift in my rig now. The Rancho kit sucks. Its
stiff as hell and has crappy articulation. I was not looking for just
another "lift kit", I wanted what the NWOR springs supposedly offered as
being soft. Reading this Toy list every day I have noticed some bad
mouthing of NWOR. So I have decided to take everybody's word and not
waste my time installing the kit. What I need to know is what company
makes a decent well articulating spring set? I allready have relocated
the shock mounts so I can utilize a much longer travel shock. I have
heard alot about National Spring but am not willing to pay there price
or wait a month and a half. Any Ideas? Thanks.

 Subject: Lets talk IGNITERS
 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
Well, I got an igniter at the local junk yard. They seemed to think that the
connectors were the key factor in differences over the years. The after-market
replacements (Jacobs, MSD) seem to be universal. They must have to have the
connectors replaced to match up with the truck? The function of these things
is to amplify the timing sensed by the magnetic pickup, and switch the primary
of the coil. This is a pretty basic function, which should be universal. The
details of the connectors, the mounting of the coil, and the assembly to
the truck could easily change according to the whims of the designers of the
truck over the years. Any opinions or experience with mounting the after-market
 parts?
The junk yard sold me a unit from an 1982, and before they let me take it,
we verified connector matching. They included the coil, mounted on the top
and charged me $100. More than I wanted to pay, but less than I was willing
to bet against sitting by the side of the road, kicking myself sometime in
 the future.
My philosophy on spare parts is that if I carry it, I'll never need it. The
corollary to that is, if I don't carry it, I will need it (and I'll feel
like an ass if I had warning and time to get a replacement.) We should
share spare parts lists and field repair experiences. I'll put mine together
 when I've got some time.
I'm running the junk yard special now, and will for a couple weeks to convince
myself it's OK. The junk yard I shop at will give me another one if this one
goes bad soon. I'm sure the $300 Toyota unit will last the life of the truck,
so I'll put it back in and never have to change it again.

I own a 1996 3.4L T100 and have a few questions and comments. It seems that
there isn't much discussion about the 3.4 and I'm ashamed to admit that I
don't know when it went into production. Am I a Ginnie pig with this
 engine?
I have had sensational luck with Toyota cars (3 Celicas, 2 Corollas and a
Tercell) and I expected the same when I bought the T100 last August. The
main "annoyance" I have experienced with this truck is the Seatbelts. No,
not the buzzer... it's the fact that every time I unbuckle I have to
manually feed the belt back into the "retractor" or else it hangs out and
gets slammed by the door. I asked Toyota to look at it (when I was in for
the Horn - see below) and they said "our primary concern is safety, and it
seems to be functioning correctly as far as safety goes". He said they
compared it to a few 97's they had on the lot and they all acted the same.
Just a poor design I guess... But that's why I buy Toy's... to avoid poor
 design.
The horn... The other day I honked at some idiot who slammed on the brakes
and turned with out signaling inches in front of me (which seems to be
common here in Iowa). The horn honked and the sputtered (audibly) AFTER I
took my hand off of it. I had to actually pull back on the plastic airbag
housing to get it to entirely stop. All was quiet until a few days later I
offered a friendly "toot" to a friend I saw on the road, and the horn locked
on. As I drove I wedged my hand in behind the same piece of plastic, but
the moment I removed my hand it started again. I managed to get pulled over
after a few blocks and popped the hood and pulled the horn wires. My timid
horns sounded quite adequate when I had my head under the hood! Later...
the dealer said "someone must have really jammed on the horn cause the
switch was bent." Well... what is a horn for anyway. Another poor design?
Anyone else have this problem. The dealer unbent the switch and I was on my
way (seatbelt hanging out when I parked and left the truck).
I too have been "toying" with the idea of a K&N air filter system. I called
NWOR last fall and they said they weren't available yet. Since then I read
(on this list, I believe) about new vehicles being set up so that any mods
which might be considered to affect emissions will shut the computer down.
It seemed as though even a simple disconnect and reconnect of any air flow
sensors might cause this to occur. Does anyone have the scoop? Am I going
to be dead in my driveway if I install a K&N on this 1996 Truck?
The other thing I want to mention (and the last thing... finally) is the
"4WD" mud flaps on my truck. They are Uggg-ly! I would much prefer just
plain black flaps, but the ones on there are molded and otherwise rather
nice. The "4WD" is raised and colored white... so I don't believe they can
 be tastefully modified. Any suggestions?
I'll avoid discussing Stereo's, Mileage (although mine sucks), Synthetic
Oil, and Gears (which I know nothing about) and go back to lurking. Thanks
 for listening...

Relax...I have a 96 3.4L and have installed the K&N filter replacement. The
improvement is similar to having the a/c on and off. A/c on and K&N
installed feels likes stock and no a/c.

I paid $30. Just open the shackle, insert the strap loop, and close it.
The strap is locked in and will not slip out, unlike a tow hook. Mine is
rated at 6.5 tons, so hopefully the strap will break before the shackle,
i.e. no flying metal. IMHO, the $30 is well worth the peace of mind.

I thought I had posted the phone number - or did that message get thrashed when
 Win95 locked up?
Finding ANY LT tyre in 225/75R15 is tough - most everyone I know gets a
 235/75R15 (which is
used by full size pickups etc).
Greer Enterprises (WI) has 'em - 1.414.545.2296
Tell em I sent ya - maybe I'll get a discount on the next set.
 a 215/80R15 is a clser size match

OK...Here I am playing in the mud and I got stuck. My wheels are spinning
and I over rev. My 96 3.4L redlines at 5.5 grand. I revved up to about 6.5
or 7 grand. The tach shows 8 grand and the engine sounded like the valve
were floating after about 6. Just curious if there is a fudge factor in the
factory marker of the redline. Also does the computer have a spark retard
or over rev limiter built in. Bear in mind that my engine was only
instantaneously at these levels. The engine was not harmed that I know of
and BTW my head gasket held.
 So any ideas out there.

I just purchased my 5th toyota 4 by 4 but the first truck ( the others
had been 4Runners). It is a 1994 Xtra cab with 58,000 miles on it. The
shocks are shot and need replacement. While on gravel mining roads, the
truck tends to wheel hop sideways when going over washboard. My 4Runners
didnt have this much problem so I am confused, stiff gas shocks for
handling or soft for off roading. Any advice? How about some brand names
 and model numbers. Thanks!

My 4Runners> didnt have this much problem so I am confused, stiff gas shocks for> handling or soft for off roading. Any advice? How about some brand names> and model numbers. Thanks! My favorite shocks (for all around use) are the Rancho RS9000's. A friend bought a set of these for his '90 standard cab p/u about 3 years ago. So far, they still work great! The only problems he's ever had, are that the knobs have gotten a little tough to turn lately, but this probably has a lot to do with the fact that he rarely adjusts them. At any rate, for most types of 4wheeling, they really work the best, and you can adjust them to be as stiff or soft as you like. If you really do a lot of pre-running, then I've heard that these shocks tend to overheat (and fade) easier than, say bilsteins or Doeche Tech (sp?). Bottom line: If I was to by a set of shocks, I would get RS9000's. YMMV Also, as a side note, your extra-cab doesn't have much weight in the bed, so the rear isn't going to stay as 'hooked up' as in the 4Runners. If you really want, you could add more weight to the rear. Maybe consider looking into heavier duty bumpers and/or a canopy.
