I am wondering if there is any way to modify the box that houses the air
filter on my 90 4 cyl with EFI. I understand that K&N has a unit that
replaces the entire box, allowing better air flow, but the price is a little
higher than I want to pay. If anyone has any suggestions on this I would
like to know.

To: toy4x4@tlca.org
In response to the question about softening the ride on the '85 long bed,
my advice is to chuck the 31's when they wear out slap on some 235's.
When I did this switch on my '85 4runner, I was amazed at the improvement
in the ride quality. Somebody told me that the ride quality in solid
axle toys is inversely related to the amount of unsprung weight... so some
alloy rims couldn't hurt either. The unfortunate side effect is that
your truck will not look as cool with the smaller tires.

How much are they charging for one of those? Is there one for a FJ-60

I have never been in a truck (on a trip) which has a front locker fitted. I
am wondering what a front diff lock would do to the handling on a truck
especially in mud. Do you find yourself slipping off the track much,
especially in those off camber situations ? Do you only lock one hub in
until the going gets really bad and then lock the other in ?
Thanks.

To: I've got a question for all you 4x4 experts out there.
I've got a 93' Toyota pickup w/ 4"Trailmaster, 3"Body, 5.29 gears. Was
curious about how to go about installing 38.5" Super Swampers.
I was wondering if a 2" torsion lift w/ 2" shackles would have to be used
to accomplish the job, or would I need fender flares. I am currently
working on a show truck.
Please email me at cgolden@mindspring.com or reply to this post.

From: Scott Wilson Subject: PCV valve
To: Toy4x4 I feel really stupid asking this, but...can someone tell me EXACTLY
where my PCV valve is on my 88 V6? I know it should be on a valve
cover, I know what it looks like. I've never not been able find a PCV
valve on an engine before. I checked three manuals, none of them were
of help. I talked to those guys at one of those Jiffy Lube places, they
had no clue. None of the other V6 owners I know have ever changed
theirs, so they have no clue either. I'm assuming it must be on the
right side valve cover, the one hidden under the intake stuff. I poked
around there all I can, but still I can't find it.
TIA,
Scott

I am just going to replay once more. The dirt tends to settle at the bottom
of the
tank. Next time also ask for the filter screen that's the one that will tell
the true
picture inside your tank. The pump becomes sluggish due to the dirt stuck in
its plastic gears. Also your fuel filter by the engine will tell the story
look on the input
side.
By the way you can test the pump outside the tank.

Mike, I just switched from an old style Skyjacker 5" lift with double
gas shocks all around to a NWOR 3.5 inch lift with single hydraulic
shocks.
The Skyjacker 5" lift was stiff and rode much better with a load in the
bed. After having the Skyjacker lift on my truck for two years, I
decided I wanted a lower softer ride. After looking at many different
suspension systems, I narrowed my decision down to either a 3.5" NWOR
"soft-ride" system or another Skyjacker system (this time 3").
After installing the NWOR "soft-ride" system, I was _greatly_
disappointed. The NWOR system rode as hard and stiff as my old style
Skyjacker System even though it was a lower lift and had single
hydraulic shocks.
So IMHO, the NWOR "soft-ride" system rides too hard and for me was a
waste of money.
*Note by old style Skyjacker system I mean the leaf springs did not have
the polyurethane pads on their tips. Also these old style spring packs
were tightly clamped at the ends instead of using loose bolt style
clamps. The new Skyjacker springs incorporate these features and I feel
these are two features that should be looked for in any spring upgrade.
Also you wrote about changing tire size. I feel that this also has an
effect on ride. I run 35" BFG All Terrains and they ride good but I
know my ride quality would improve if I changed to a 32" BFG (smaller).

- ---- I am running RS 5000's (10"front,14"rear) now, but before that I
had D-tech prerunners. I chose the rs5000's out of convinence and am
happy with them. I feel that most of the quality non charged shocks on
the market are so similar. On my previous vehicle (86 4-runner) I had
bilsteins front and rear. If you like to go over terrain quickly they
are great. I dont think anyone can question the quality of a bilstien
but I was happier with the performance of the explorer non charged shock
after I swaped them. - ---- I put in a pair of lockrites into my 86 4-runner drove it almost
30k and then sold it. I loved my lockrites ! I never had a bit of
trouble with them or the factory carriers. They were connected to
31x13.5 SS/sx's and 4.56 gears ( the 31's with wheels weighed close to
75 lbs). The lockrite is a good product for medium duty off roading. I
agree that a detroit is a better choice for streingth and durability
reasons but is usualy twice as much and instalation may require
re-seting the pinion spacing.

This past weekend I noticed a 'swirling with a little rattle' noise coming from my

The vehicle is a '85 4Runner with a 22RE, 5-speed and 92,000 miles. Any ideas?
