The Toyota manual shows the pcv valve below the fuel injection manifold
and is a pain to get to. Had the same location on my v6 Camry and ended
up breaking the plastic valve getting it out. have fun.

system than have a local shop make one. any info would help , has anyone done these mods I'm considering?

I have taken the top off of my '85 4runner for the last three
Summers and have had no problems whatsoever. Just make sure
of one thing when putting it back on: snug up the six bolts
that hold it to the "cab" before tightening any of the other
bolts that connect to the "bed".
FWIW, I will probably not ever remove my 4Runner top again.
It was fun the first few times, but eating a tremendous amount
of dust, baking in the sun, and being surprised by a few Sierra
rain showers kind of took away from the fun. Call me sissy if
you will, but I kind of like my heater/AC when the other folks
 are freezing/frying in the elements.

I had mine off and on twice this past summer, with no problems. We
went thru a very wet winter here in N.Cal, and had no leaks.
I treated the gaskets (on the top, and on the cab) with Armour-All
every couple of weeks to keep them soft, and pliable. Be sure to
use 3 people to remove/replace the canopy. Very expensive to fix or
replace if you drop or otherwise damage it. I had a custom 'bikini' top
made , to use with the top off. If I had to do it over again, I would
probably go with the Downey bikini, even tho I've yet to see one up close.
I know a guy with an '87 and has the Downey full soft top. Never uses
the hard top anymore. (maybe because he may have had to drill holes and
attach snaps to the top rails and the old top won't go back on). Myself,
I like the comfort, and security of the hard top in winter/spring.

 To: toy4x4@tlca.org
In addition to the other safety switches mentioned there
are two limit switches located in the tailgate that limit
window travel in both the up and down extremes. I have had
a connector fall off of one of these switches causing the
window to stick in the down position.
In addition to all of that, there is a VERY VERY expensive relay
located in the side panel near the drivers side seat belt spool.
That relay is the central "brain" for all of the safety and limit
switches. Chances are the relay is fine and one of the many
 switches is faulty.

Regardeless of what happened to your neighbor's 4runner, the potential of
having trouble with powered windows exist no matter what. These motors
and connections are subject to constant vibrations so don't be discouraged
bu that, just make sure when you buy that all electrical motors function.

(fuse??)>Has anyone else had this experience? Is it common?? It's not serious,>but I'm considering a 1st-gen IFS 4runner, and that could be a nuisance.>Thanks!
Theres a micro-switch in the second bolt hole back along the left
bed rail. If you don't tighten this bolt enough or omit it entirely, the switch
doesn't flip and the window is prevented from going. The window is
specifically designed not to operate with the top off, which is good,
because without support from the top, it would easily break off.

 Subject: FCC Imposed Charges
 Date: Friday, January 31, 1997 3:00 AM
I am writing you this to inform you of a very important matter currently
under review by the FCC. Your local telephone company has filed a proposal
with the FCC to impose per minute charges for your internet service. They
contend that your usage has or will hinder the operation of the telephone
 network.
It is my belief that internet usage will diminish if users were required to
pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an email box for
your comments, responses must be received by February 13, 1997. Send your
comments to isp@fcc.gov and tell them what you think.
Please forward this email to all your friends on the internet so all our
 voices may be heard.

 To: " - (052)DRM033 (a) aol.com" David:
All the pics that I have seen of the EFI trucks (up until the Taco and 96+
 4Runners) seems
to indicate that those engines all use a Bosch type flapper vane Air metering
 system.
Even those these "sit on top" of the air box, the air actually enters through
 the side
if the curved box sitting on top of the air filter. Thus all of these should be
 candidates
 for Jay's home made airbox.
The new generation engines appear to use a hot wire system (similar to Ford's
 EEC-IV
system on the Mustangs etc). SInce these are "in line" witht he intake
 plumbing, fitting
an air box should be even easier on these.
I am not firmly convinced that there is a restriction based on the air filter
 and the "box".
In other words, I think there are to be gains by swapping the filter (say 7%)
 buit there
are much smaller gains for swapping the box (say an additional 2%).
The restictions are probably in the air vane meter itself - which can not be
easily gotten rid of - w/o going to a different type of fuel injection.
This being said - there are reasons for keeping the stock box - and not cutting
 holes
 in it:
1 - The stock box probably is a tad better at resisting h20 invasions when
 water crossing
2 - The stock box is quieter than an open element (that Lexus thing)
3 - The Stock element makes it replaceable by "quickie lube" guy - they can
 throw
 away your K&N filter :)
The reasons for ditching the stock box
1 - it looks "down town leroy brown"
 2 - it sounds cool
3 - a bigger elemet takes longer to get clogged (baja guys)
I actually run a Downey box - yeah I know - more dollars than sense.
Actually the best would be to take a cue from the NASCAR guys and run a
box taking air from just below the winshield - I think Ironman 4Runner
does this (he has a V8 too!)

Curious.....what are their custom springs going for?
In reference to the custom springs built by Rocky Mountain Off-Road.
Rocky Mountain Off-Road is located in Grand Junction, Colorado about
an hours drive from Moab. Rocky Mountain Off-Road is run by a group
of Toyota "fanatics" as they call themselves.
Basically they will create tailor a suspension setup to a buyer's
wants. The price for each spring is approximately $150.00 ($600.00
for four springs). Their 4" softride Toyota setup includes front
springs with 5 leafs and the rears with 7 leafs. Compare this to
 other suspension builders.
Besides building suspensions their shop does customs fabrication of
various parts such as bumpers and lightbars.
For more information on the type of work this shop does, there is an
article in November 1996's Four Wheel and Off-Road magazine that
highlights their work. (I don't have that copy in front of me so I
don't know which article it is off hand.)
Anyway Jack and Jay, (if I remember you are going to Moab Easter)
James and his gang will be at Moab Easter weekend and are willing to
discuss ideas and information. I have talked to James and he is very
willing to discuss suspensions, spring rates, shocks, and anything
 else.

I drive an 83 with the 22R and 31's over a fairly steep mountain pass every
day to work. It goes OK if you keep the revs up and don't slow down. It's
not a race car, but I don't get many speeding tickets either. You can do
a lot of things to improve performance, from gear changes to total engine
replacement, but if your only real concern is your buddie's opinions.....

As I am nearing the point in my V-8 installation where I can
actually measure the length required for my driveshafts, I was
wondering if anyone had any thoughts on wether or not to do a one
piece shaft in the rear. From what I've read, I will be about 3
3/4" shorter than stock - or should I just get the stock shafts cut
 & balanced?
Anyone recomend a shop to order new shafts from? Any
expierence with Mid States distributors (I think that's the name)?

 I recently purchased a 1997 T100 4x4 with the newer 190hp V6 and have
heard about a major problem with this engine whereby it is having "blown
head gaskets". Toyota is being very tight-lipped about this. I know of
two individuals who have had this problem, one of which had the dealer
point to 5+ vehicles in his lot waiting for repairs.
Have you or anyone you know heard of this? Any info or direction would

Where I grew up, hunting was THE reason you bought a 4x4!
I'm not at all surprised to see such a correlation between
4x4s and hunters.>Is it deer that you all love to blast, or is this some 4x4 related>thing?>Please explain (and excuse my skepticism)
Personally, I don't like to get near the woods during deer season,
because while most deer hunters are responsible, the sheer numbers
of hunters in my area means that there's a bunch of drunk, unsafe
people with rifles that can reach out a long ways... they really
make the rest of the safe hunters look bad.
Personally, I hunt spring turkey. Hunting them (at least where I go)
involves long treks on dirt roads to get to the canyons on the
Columbia River where they live. (uh, then it involves dressing up
in full camoflage and literally making noises like a horny hen, but
I won't get into that... :) Then you blast 'em in the head with 2.25
ounces of #4, 5, or 6 shot doing about 1200fps...then you go to
the doctor and ask him politely to put your shoulder back together :)

I am writing you this to inform you of a very important matter
 currently
under review by the FCC. Your local telephone company has filed a
 proposal
with the FCC to impose per minute charges for your internet service.
 They
contend that your usage has or will hinder the operation of the
 telephone
 network.
It is my belief that internet usage will diminish if users were
 required o
pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an email box for
your comments, responses must be received by February 13, 1997. Send
 your
comments to isp@fcc.gov and tell them what you think.
Please forward this email to all your friends on the internet so all
 our

I
figure I don't want the hassle of driveshaft mods, or new holes in the floor,
etc. I don't see how you would need two different low ranges. Sure, it it
neat to point out the extra lever, but above that... If you need a higher
gear than your new low range first, try third. I believe that third gear
with the new low gears is like the stock low 1st. that still leaves 4th, and
5th as your old 2nd and 3rd. If you need to go faster than that, switch back
to 4HI. Does this make sense? Although I feel this way, I too want to hear
from Marlin owners and what they think.

I hunt deer, elk, turkey and javelina. The truck is only used to get
into the areas where I like to hunt in the mountains, although some
people you see like to drive around all day looking for game. I typically
get out and hunt every year, provided I get drawn for permits. Seasons are

Hmm, I have a V6 in my 4Runner. It is a '91 but I'm pretty sure the pcv
should be in the same location, mine was located on top of the passenger
side valve cover, toward the back. There is a black hose that runs from
it to the side of the Intake manifold. It's tight getting to it. I
bought a new one for mine but I have been unable to remove my old one
:(. Every now and then I try to remove mine but it wont budge + there
is not much room to work without getting cut up. Maybe I'll give it
another try today. Ok, hope this helps.

You may be giving "bad" ideas to marketing people. I mean if we had a whole
report on who drives what, you basically would actual have an estimate on
the toyota market for parts, service, and potential new truck buyers based
on their satisfaction with toyota trucks.
That may be an interestin thought, because this is a money making
 information.
This also brings some ethic issues as to who really controls this bank of
 information.

I have an 83 truck that came with a 5-speed trans that also had the transfer
case lever interference with the transmission lever. I know the trans has
been replaced because when I pulled it to replace the clutch I could see the
yellow paint the junk yard had put on to mark it. I didn't know why the levers
hit each other, maybe because it is a new transmission and original transfer
case? Anyway, to fix it, I removed the transfer case lever and bent it about
45 degrees out of the way with a torch. Be sure to mark it before you remove
it so you know which way to bend it. I don't know about the noise, though.
My only experience is with the setup I've got.

Had the same problem with my 93 standard cab, I bought the Rancho soft
ride add a leaf kit and it solved my problems. You can gain about 3
inches if you add the 2 rancho leaves to your springs or remove one of
the stock leaves and gain 2 inches. I started with the full kit and
found the lift too much, removed the recommended leaf (in the
instructions) and my truck sat perfect. It sits a little tail high
unloaded but when I tow my boat or fill the bed it sits perfectly level.

Sorry to hear about you T case woes.
Actually - its "probably" just the rear bearing - and it can be yanked w/o
 taking the
T-case out of the truck (at least on the 4 cyl manauls - gear driven T case).
(at least I recall taking apart the case w/o taking it out of th truck)
BUT - its probably not as cheap as you might think.
If I recall right - $50 to $80 for the bearing (although If recall right -
that one at least has a bearing part number so you could just source it
 anywhere)
The problem is if there is any damage further in the case - the you sp[end $$
 chasing
stuff down and more than the chearper route - getting a junkyard T-Case
 Last I checked $300 to $500 gets a T-Case.
If you dont care about a tad of "whine" and rumble - pull the rear bearing off
and add some new seals. - hopefully get away with $150 max

Newer trannies are much better and stronger, chances are there is something
wrong somewhere. A while ago I bought a used tranny with a bad 2nd gear,
the fellow was honest and fixed it, but while removing the tranny I bent the
 clutch
disc a little and that was enough to offset the trannys performance, and the
shifter were also binding, after 4 removals I figured out the problem with
 the help
of the same old timer that sold it to me.
I no longer have the truck has been sold (toy 85), by the way the shift
 fork for

4-banger, stock gears, 31s, and 4-low. You find a hill you can't go up, I
don't want to try it with my 350 Cruiser!! 5th gear is gonna be sluggish
on the highway, and there will be a lot of places where 4-hi won't be an
option. In 4-low you'll only be limited by your ground clearance,

My '83 also makes the swirling noise with the rattling. I would have to agree

I put a Downey 3" lift and 31's on it first. My motor started burning a lot
of oil so I swapped in
a newer one. As many pre-'84 trannies do, mine decided it wanted to die. I
found a badly wrecked '90 pickup with 12,000 miles to donate its
tranny.(swapping a new tranny in an older pickup is a little tricky because
they are different lengths) This past fall a started getting a lot of
blow-by, which I discovered was a broken ring when I rebuilt the whole
motor. It ran very solid for a while but this week I am rebuilding my third
