Please expound. I am now running my second set of these springs. My
first were on a V8 equipped '83 Shortbox with a heavy NP203 transfer
case. The ride was excellent. The ride in my Extra-Cab leaves much to be
desired.
Since you have an Extra-Cab, your set-up would be a great place to
start. Which leaves should I remove? etc

The Cruise control will "kick out" and the light will flash when the
vehicle speed drops to more than 10 MPH below the set speed (usually on
hill climbs). Simply turn off the CC and turn it on again and it will work
normally.

Toyota is lifted about 3" (2" suspension & 1" body) and has 31" tires, gears
are all stock until I can afford 33" tires & gears at the same time. It has
290,000km (180,000mi) however I rebuilt the engine after 220,000km but only
because I stripped a spark plug hole, tried to cram it back in the hole, and
a few weeks later shot the plug almost through the hood. Truck and myself
were originally from Nova Scotia (East Coast) so the toy is sporting lots of
rust holes but are mostly covered up by fiberglass and a Tremclad spray can
paint job. Truck actually looks really good considering pieces of the box
were about to rust right off and the fenders had holes.

Subject: engine comparisons?
To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
OK, here's the story behind the question. My previous truch was a 91 Toy
4X4 with the 3.0 V6 engine. I traded it in 95 with 77K because it was
burning oil and just because it was time for something new. I got a 95
Nissan pathfinder, which has a very similar engine with similar specs.
28K miles later I have come to the realization that I'm a truck person and
not an SUV person. I don't think I'm a Nissan person either. What in the
world were these people thinking when they geared this thing? At 65 mph it
runs at 3400 RPM in 5th gear. 15 mpg is about the norm.
Anyway, it's Toyota time soon. I know I want an extracab Tacoma, but I'm
debating the engine choice. The 2.7 4cyl is suppposed to have the same HP
(150) as the old 3.0 six and my Nissan six, but I wonder if paper and
reality agree. The 3.0 gave me all the power I needed, so if the 4 cyl is
about the same I'm going to go with it.
The question: any 2.7 owners who also owned a 3.0 out there? How do they
compare?
Thanks,
Sean

From: Matthew Barker Subject: Horrible noise in front end.
To: "Toyota 4x4's" Hello fellow Toyota owners. I am hoping that someone can relate to my
problem as it is becoming quite annoying. Here's my story.
Part 1.)During the cold winter months when the temperature dropped
below 30.F outside my 1991 4Runner would occasionaly make this horrible
whining vibration type noise from the front end. It sounds like it was
on the passenger side wheel area, and you could feel it in the floor.
Anyway the noise increases in pitch as you speed up.
Part 2.)I make an appointment with toyota to get my truck fixed and I am
lucky enought to talk to a mechanic who says he knows exactly what I am
talking about because his 4Runner does the samething. We go for a drive
in my truck but we are unable to reproduce the noise. I make an
appointment to get it fixed after finding out that it will cost me
(gulp) $522.36. My invoice called for a "roller bearing update".
Well to make a long story short my truck was "fixed" in the end of
October and It is Janurary and the noise is back in full force with
these temperatures in the teens. I am hoping that there is someone on
this list with an IFS toyota who has had this problem and has fixed it,
as this is annoying and embarrasing to drive past people.
A few more notable mentions: Bumps trigger the noise, the noise
doesn't occur when I shift to 4Hi or 4Lo.
I am going to toyota to raise some hell this week but I was hoping
someone else could relate to my problem. Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 93 4Runner and the 2 back
windows roll up extremely slow. Sometimes they even stall. I have to
"rev" the engine to get them up. The front windows are fine. Why is
this?

To: toy4x4@tlca.org
The frame on my '85 X-Cab is shot (rust) and a local yard has an '88
X-Cab frame from out-of-state (no rust). Is it insane to consider
splicing in this frame with my own or doing the conversion to straight
axle?
It should be easier to do the conversion with just the frame to throw
around?
Or would it be easier to just splice the frame under the cab thereby
skipping the complete frame switch?
Sure would be nice to blast the new frame!?

Yes and no, even on an RTI ramp you can't truly measure all of a
suspensions capabilites. I've gotten my truck pretty twisted up
with some concrete blocks/blocks of wood/ wood car ramps/etc. in my driveway,
you do have to worry about driving or jacking one end of the truck up to
much though, it'd be an ugly sight with your truck laying on it's side
in the driveway ... :-)

This is a good question. I also have an early model Toyota ('81) that
is in need of a transmission. The early 81-83 SR5 Toyota 4x4s had a
weak five speed transmission. By design, these transmissions (5
speeds) were prone to destroy input shaft bearings easily.
I am also looking for advice on this problem. Has anyone swapped in
a later model tranny and transfer case? If so what modifications
were necessary? Has anyone rebuilt this transmission with upgraded
parts?
Nick Krest (?) I think you have an early model SR5. What has been
your experience with your five speed transmission?

What are you running for brake line length here Jack?
I have been using the 5"-6" lift versions. They seem a bit long at first
but better too long than too short.
