From: "Larry D Walls" Subject: 1980 Hilux's parts
To: "Toy4x4" Maybe someone out there can help me, I'm looking for a new floor pan for a
1980 Toyota Hilux 4x4 4spd Pickup right hand steering. The Toyota dealer
show's it on the "fish" but has no part number for it, everything but that.
I can get a used one but all my other parts are new, because of the rust
it's a total rebuild.(to much time on the beach in Japan) I couldn't tell
that much of a difference between the US & the Japan models on the pan so
maybe a US version will work. If anyone can help it would be very much
appreciated, also if anyone has any questions or has seen another right
side drive pu they can e-mail at addressee below.
 Thanks,
 Larry D Walls

Well , you did know that the blocks in '85 were 2MM shorter didn't you ;-) ??
(actually 8/84 changeover) and in '84 they used a domed (donut) top piston and
in '85 the piston was a flat-top? If you use pre-85 pistons (donut top) on a 85
 - - up block and a 20R head, you will yeild a much higher compression... somewhere
around 11.5:1! The block is the same bore, and the crank stroke is exactly the
same, but the deck heights are 2MM off of the 81-84 deck heights. The domed
pistons WILL NOT work on an 85-up head.... If you need more specifics, drop me a
 note...

To: Michael Henry Your going to get accurate replys from others on the list but here is my
 two cents worth.
This same thing happened to my roomate when he took a friends 84 block
for rebuild. His truck was an 85. After the machine work was completed
they found the same problem. It seems as though some 85 motors had an
oddball deck height and internals to go with it. From what I have heard
this was only for the 85 models.
Needless to say I have a newly machined 84 block sitting in the garage.
I would be very interested in trading this block for yours. All the
machine work has been completed by a very reputable shop here in
 Minnesota.
Would you or anyone else on the list with an 85 block be interested in
 a trade?
Anyone interested in taking it off my hands for the cost of the machine
 work?

Mike, that thing on the back of your lighter is called a fusible link. It's
the little brother to those dozens of green plugs you see decorating the
underside of your hood. These are there for a reason - to keep you from
burning up your wiring harness. Replace these; do not bypass them.
As for getting 12V power thru a lighter, I believe you should run a fused
line (probably with a relay, too) from your battery to an auxiliary lighter
plug. Or redo your compressor plug so it takes mini jumper-cable type
terminals. Or get a compressor that isn't putting such a huge load on your
 electrical system.
 Good luck,
 - Nick

a short in the circuit, is my first guess... you probably scuffed the
insulation or something. you mentioned, 'if twisted wrong' could also mean
that the connection isn't tight.> Any suggestions on how to get plenty of power thru the lighter without> burning my truck up?
yes. run it straight from the battery. get a standard 12 v relay, say around
30 amps capable. run this output of the relay into the cab area and create
your own 12v source and you can mount it anywhere. you can even route it back
 to the OEM lighter location.
one thing to add. i'd run the ACCES wire to the relay as the on/off switch so
you won't end up draining the battery when the key isn't in the ignition
 switch.
oh yeah, don't forget to FUSE the relay close to the battery also. and use a
higher gauge wire for the 12v feeder... write back if you need help with the
relay business or if i confused you more... 8-))

This is not intended as a flame, but perhaps if you were a bit more concerned
with the inner workings of your truck you would haven't had to spend the
$90 in the first place or for that matter had to pay someone to install
that new set of cross drilled rotors. I hope if you truly off-road
(i.e. a long way from any mechanic shops) that you always wheel with
someone who can fix your truck in the event it should break down.
I'm by far no master mechanic but with a little patience and a few shop
manuals you'd be surprised the things you can fix (money you can save)
and make yourself more self-reliant at the same time.

Sorry if I gave the impression I don't know how my truck works and that I don't know
how to fix it. Don't get me wrong, don't plan I be pulling my own engine any time
soon, but that's mostly due to lack of time. I had the rotors installed while I was
going through finals at school, for my Electrical Engineering degree, and in the
middle of changing jobs. Not exactly a good time to have my truck apart in my
 garage.
This isn't a flame either, I just wanted to let you know my reasoning behind having
the shop do the work for me. Perhaps my comment about 'not caring' was out of place.
I do get a little upset (understatement) when dealing with incompetant mechanics.

I would like some help please. I need to increase the mileage on my '91
runner some. After 52.000 miles I gave it a small tune, new plugs, wires,
cap and rotor. I still only get 13 mpg. I am in CO and we are running a
gas additive in our fuel which accounts for some of the loss. About a month
ago I noticed a loss of power and mileage. I used to get 15 mpg. And decent
power, but all of a sudden the loss. It is a v6 with a 5spd. Someone told
me the o2 sensor might be bad and to replace that, but when I called toyota
said they last much longer and also cost about $250.00 anyone with a idea
please let me know. By the way thanks for the help on the brakes, I think
that I will be getting drilled rotors first and then maybe discs for the back.

Not sure if you can count on Downey coming out with the disc kit.....they
had been saying it was coming out in February 1996.
I didn't feel like waiting, and I wasn't going to pay $600+ for the kit,
so I came up with my own homemade rear disc conversion.
I use Cadillac calipers and Chevy vented rotors. The system works well
but the calipers require a lot of fluid. When I get some time, I will swap
my original master cylinder with a larger bore FJ40 unit.
I swapped to gain more braking for my 33s on the street and also provide
more downhill trail braking for my auto tranny (little compression braking).
Benefits on a 4Runner should be even greater given the more equal weight
 distribution (4Runner vs. truck).
