(including clear powder coating - another bad
idea. Anyone know how to strip this?)....
A lot of aluminum Harley parts are clear-coated and a lot of guys
supposedly use aircraft (aluminum) paint stripper to remove the
clear coat and then polish the aluminum to the finish they want.
Never tried such stripping, so can't vouch for the method.

Hey buds,
Pleasure to be new on the Net. Also new 40 owner. Rare find in NY.
Bought(stole)
an 82 FJ40, pretty set up, and more so by the day, but not without cancer for
1500 bucks. Stumble over the thing while Mt. biking in NJ with dog. Thing
is, its got some aftermarket A/C.!!!*** *****jackpot***** Some funky Hi-way
/ City controlls which elude me. Must give it a dose of R12 and believe it
will blow. Info on this A/C unit (probably worth 750 alone) would be greatly
appreciated. Will scan future photos of this find soon. I promise you all
will choke. (for all purposes identical to Red 40 on Scam-A-Fre Home page)
By the way Toyota Gods are watching over Rockland County , NY--
Have top off 85 4-runner for five days straight , beautiful. More head turns
than the Cruiser--- well almost.
Also need advice about securing full cage to frame to avoid sheetmetal stre
ss or what's left.

To: toy4x4@tlca.org
Howdy 4x4 folks,
First I'd like to say I've learned quite a lot reading everyone's posts.
Thank you all.
I have a specific question I'd like to throw out to those of you who are
knowledgable about low-restriction exhaust systems. The application is an
'86 4x4 truck with a factory turbocharger.
I've been talking to local muffler folks who have been trying to sell two
different brands of low-restriction mufflers. One is called a megaflow and
the other is called a flowmaster. Would you please offer your
experience/knowledge as to which is superior?
It's my understanding that the megaflow is of the quieter of the two, which
I like, but my ultimate concern is performance, hands down.
My info on Catalytic converters is rather vague; the shops tell me they
have "high flow units, 2 1/4 in, 2 1/4 out... this is CA and you gotta
have 'em... they're all the same and none of them honor their warranety."
(almost a direct quote)
I'm planning on having the work done (it kills me to have someone else work
on my truck...) on Monday.
I don't think any of the local shops are asking too much, 300-375 dollars,
for their work and parts.
I have one last question, and this is really bothering me: Where should the
2 1/4 aluminized pipe start? Each of the shops I visited wanted to start
about 18-22 inches BELOW the actual flange. I would rather start it at the
flange, but... Any comments?
Thanks for reading this stuff... All coments welcome...

worthwhile.)

I have seen some 88's rot just like the old ones and these were trucks
that spent there entire life in Tennessee. Not all of them will mind you

I now this is rather long but I figured the more you know about my
situation maybe the more you could help.
Iam new to the list but so for think it is great and hope
someone can
help me out. I have an '82 Trekker. This is the same as the '82 SR5 4x4
but the rear body is coverted into a 4runner.
My problem is about two weeks ago I ajusted the clutch because
it was
getting sloppy from wear. It ran perfect for about a week when suddenly
I tried to down shift and the transmission seemed to look up. There was
a loud metal on metal sound. I had to come to a stop and force it out of
third gear. This happened out side of my house so I managed to get it
into first and hobble to the garage. When I was doing this the clutch
felt very rough and there was a new vibration when the truck was moving.
Also when completly releasing the clutch there was a very loud 'bang'
tha was also felt.
After sitting for a couple of days may dad and I bleed the
clutch
lines checked theclutch ajustments which were fine. while sitting there
we could go through all the gears so we decided to drive it. At first it
was rough but then it smoothed right out. When I got it up to speed and
tried to use 5th gear it went in fine but it wasn't there. It was like
it was still in neutral. There is no grinding at all so I know it isn't
doing any more damage. All the other gears are fine I just have to
neutrals( one being the old 5th gear).
Thanks in advance for any responses:)

In some areas this is very common. Especially in the summer months. We
have been lucky so far and not had to make too many people wait for that
lenght of time. There have been a few though. The problem is the plant
where the V-6 engines where produced has been retooled for the 3.4 V-6,
so what this amounts to is one plant trying to build two engines. At the
same time they are trying to keep up production of the 3.4 while
producing 3.0 short blocks for warranty repairs. As far as the HG's
there are some people who will wait for awhile because of the demand for
them, Same deal as the engine. Supposedly Toyota does not actually make
their own gaskets someone is contracted to do it, the problem is the
same people doing the 3.0 HG's is also making the 3.4's.
One little note: supposedly the problem with the HG's is not really
Toyotas fault but whoever makes their HG's. This is just what I have
heard from different people from Toyota.

From: Eric Stegall Subject: Rear Brakes
To: toy4x4@tlca.org
My rear brakes on my 91 X-Cab seem to be dragging when I release the
e-brake. The first time this happened, my rims were very HOT!!! It seems
like the self adjusting mechanism does not know when to stop indexing the
shoes tighter. I have to back off the indexer in order to release the
shoes from the drum. After I get the drums off, everything looks perfect;
according to the Toy manual. Maybe my e-brake linkage is not set up right.
I know the manual says the e-brake handle should only click 11 - 17 times.
My handle tends to click about 30 times. Does this look like my shoes
need to be adjusted closer to the drums? If so, how much drag should there
be and how do I know when they are close enough? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

were mounted in tandem....coupled w/ springs from Deaver, this two ton
behemoth soaks alot of the stuff up....and that's just on some RR tracks
around the neighborhood. And get this -- remote resevoirs are available
for $140 (!). All you have to do is drill a hole, weld a bung for a
NPT thread, and plumb any way you like. Other valving kits are available
for "Sand Dune Racing, Mud Bog Racing, and Design Your Own Damping Curve."
I'm sorta torn as to whether these might be a viable alternative to some
Fox Shox that we were almost about to plunk some cash onto.
Some of you w/ sand rails and buggies may have had experience w/ these.
How do they hold up? How do they compare w/ others? We haven't taken the
Scout out yet for any really gnarly running, but at moderate speeds they
seem okay...a bit warm after some passes though(no resevoirs mounted -
yet). Any thoughts, persuasions, or recommendations for a Toy?

I couldn't stand to wait until tomorrow to install my new shocks. All
went well and I can't believe how good the truck rides now. I will have
to play with the settings to experiment a little bit but with the fronts
on 3 and the rears on 2 the truck was firm but had all the control that
it never had with the stock shocks. So far I'm a believer. Thanks to all
who recommended these!

vary from yours because: my front end has the stiffer Rancho springs and
two RS9000's per side on the solid axle, and my rear end has the add-a-leaf
springs with one RS9000 per side.
Anywaze, I found that _my_ best ride is with all the front shocks on setting
#3, and the rear shocks on setting #1 (yep, the softest) with an empty bed.
Anything higher and the rear end wanted to bounce up in the air over every
crack in the freeway. I haven't carried a load in the bed yet, but I'm sure
I will have to raise the setting a notch or two to compensate for any extra
weight.
Good luck!

Not designed for that temp.. my butt. I have owned my 85 4runner since
91 and have put it through 6 winters in crested butte CO. Most morniings
from DEC to FEB are 25 below zero. We get the occasional 30 below. Heck,
were still getting frost at night. My 4runner has never failed to start
and perform, never. sure it makes some noise at that temp. the steering
pump squeels and the transmission moans a little bit.(the transmission
fluid gets so thick that it pushes foward even in neutral.) I dont plug
it in to a block heater like many here have to. the only thing i'm
careful to do is run an oil that has a 5W-X rating. I have also run
slick 50 on and off, but who knows.... As for your rubbing noise, Keep
looking for it and you'll locate it eventually. in the mean time enjoy
your noise free summer!!

No, I know the 22RE was in celicas (83-85? or thereabouts), I'm curious if the TURBO 22RTE was ever in a celica.
My favorite years of celicas though were the 76 and 77 fastbacks. But we're WAY off topic here, unless we dropped a xfer case in one...

I know of a '65 Mustang with a Toyota T-Case. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

And I know of a Triumph Spitfire with Toy 4x4 running gear. Thankfully the police made him take it off the road. :-)

Well, I'm good friends with the guy w/ the Mustang. It's sitting on all
Toyota 4x4 running gear too, with about a 450hp big block. All street
legal too! Its pretty cool to cruise around pismo in. Its amazes me
the abuse that the toy running gear will hold up to.

I've noticed some trucks seem to have the black or chrome trim
strips but others seem to only have some type of black rubber
gasket. The chrome strips on my SR5 have suffered due to branches
and a few windshield changes and I've thought the next time I
have to have it changed I'd swap to the plain rubber gasket.
Can anybody comment on this?

|From the factory, the Toyota windshields are glued in, but if they ever
are replaced, its usually preferable to switch to the rubber
weatherstrip. Its much easier to deal with than gluing in the new
windshield, and IMO, would relieve a little bit of stress from the
windshield when the truck is flexed out, maybe preventing further
cracking of an already damaged windshield.
