I'm rebuilding my '84 22R, carburated (266,400 miles) from the block
up. I'm in need of some advice. Which replacement parts should be
"Toyota" and which "aftermarket" parts can be used reliably? I like to
do as much of the work as possible but I'm only a 2 to 3 banana mechanic
(i.e. no air tools, welder, torch, or 30 ton press brake).
Any suggestions on mfg's for different parts will be appriciated.

Scott now is a good time to have the carbon build-up cleaned from your
intake and egr system. Having your fuel injectors cleaned won't be a bad
idea. Have your valve stem seals replaced, the parts should be in the
head gasket kit. If they replace the block or take it out to be
 resurfaced,
have your clutch and flywheel checked. At this piont there should not be
 any
labor cost to install a new clutch, except the cost of turning the
 flywheel.
I would buy my own clutch if a Toyota one is to high.

was right, and it was the head gasket. The second they told me we were
both wrong, and that it was the heater control valve, and two hoses.
I'm not sure if I should feel good, or bad. I get my truck back in 3-4
days (verses 2-3 months), but I'm out $300 (does this sound right
Jim?)(verses nothing for warrenty work). Even though I'm out the
money, it'll be nice being able to get the wheelin' in this spring/early
summer that I was planning on, especially the trip to Hollister next
 Saturday. :)

$300 for a heater control valve and two heater hoses? This sounds a
 little high.
The heater control valve should only be about $70.00 max. The hoses in
total, maybe $60.00 (just taking a guess). Labor time for a heater
control valve R&R is .6 hours. Hoses .9 for all. Then again, I'm not
speaking for what that particular dealer charges for parts and their
hourly labor rate...It's up to them.

 Feel cautious.
My dealer told me ther was nothing wrong with the clutch ( toy gm ).
Seems it needs replacement by another dealer ( Jag toy ).
Long story, short lesson: Be Cautious.

I agree with you. Had I diagnosed the problem correctly the first time,
thats the way it would've happened. Now that it's been towed to the
dealership, it's a little more awkward now. The dealship already has
two hours of diagnosis time on my truck that they're willing not to
charge me for, since I'm having it done there. Plus (thanks to my TLCA

A while back , somebody mentioned something about Chevy add-a-leaves working
on an 86 & up truck in the rear if you cut them a little. Well, a friend
just gave me a set of 3" leaves for a 95 Chevy. I think the width is right,
but the doo need to be cut down for sure. I have another spare set of Toy
springs, and thought I would try to put together some springs to get rid of
my blocks. Also, I remember either Jack or Jay used Rancho leaves in their
Mazda spring swap. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Nope, I didn't use any Rancho springs in my swap, my packs are all Mazda
leaves. I'm sure you could cut one of the leaves down and use it to
gain the lift back from removing your blocks but I don't think you'd
be very happy with their articulation. All the Rancho packs I've
seen used .280" or .300" thick leaves which don't have the habit of
flexing real well when there's lots of leaves in the pack.
What makes the Downey rear springs flex well is that the leaves are
much thinner than a stock toyota pack or most aftermarket packs.
Anyways, I'm getting sidetracked, to answer your question. Yes, you
can do that. Here's what I'd try, if the Rancho leaves have a fair bit
of arch to them I'd remove the stock overload leaf from your pack
if you haven't already (it greatly limits compression). Then I'd cut one
of the Rancho leaves down to about 26-28" in length and have it be
the bottom leaf in your pack. Just for comparison, the lower leaf
in my rear springs are 24" long but are .240" thick, by making your
lowest leaf (the most important leaf in controlling ride height,
assuming the leaves are either all the same thickness or get thinner
from top to bottom) a bit longer than mine, you should gain a bit of
height from it and still maintain some flexibility. This is assuming
you're not wanting to gain 4" or more from an add-a-leaf and
expect it to flex at all ... Just don't cut the leaves with a torch !
You can always make the leaves shorter but you can't make them longer,
if it isn't quite the ride height you're looking for (after bolting
them up and riding them to let them settle for a few days) pull them
back off and cut an 1" off each end, this will make the pack sit
higher, but less flexibility does come with this added height.

Oh yeah, don't forget to taper the end of whatever leaves you end up
cutting or they'll cut into the upper/(possibly lower too, depending
upon compression ability) leaves in the pack. You can't exactly do
the fancy diamond cut thing at home but a few hits with a grinder
 will do the job.

This is one of the things I have been resisting answering to.
If the spring is the same width, and the arch ( radius ) is the same ,
then you should be able to add them ( one on each side and in the same
 position ).
You wanna make baby sit higher and be tighter than "stock"?
Go to a bone yard and finds a spring pak that is of the same width as
the Toy, then take them home and stick em in. add leaves from the top
down and make sure they are, on both ends, shorter than the ones above,
and longer than the ones below. The free radius may matter little, as
its the radius when clamped that matters, not the rad when laying on the
 ground and released.
Therein lies the rub: My experience in spring work has been limited ( so
to say ) to mustangs. Mu best set up had Chrystler full sized wagon
springs in her ( three leafe instead of the stock four leave ). Baby
would hook up on the launch as well as carry a load.
Untill the Toy is out of warrenty, I cant play with her much. But, do I
love the way the spring wrap plays. Shw wraps to push down to push me
forward. When I do get to play with her mechanics more, this is a trait
 I wish to retain.
Quit looking for the "absolute answer". It dont exist.
Its too late, and I got to get up too early.
 More coherience later.

From: Eric Johnson Subject: Some shock info
To: "'toy4x4@tlca.org'" Since I have been shopping for new rear shocks (mine seem too stiff and I
want more travel), I wrote down some specs at the parts store for Rancho
and Trailmaster rear shocks that fit on 84-88 Toyota 4x4s, maybe on other
years too. I thought others might find this info useful:
Rancho part number:	lift	Compressed	Extended:	Travel:
 x180 0	13.53 21.98 8.45
 x144 2	14.02 22.89 8.87
(my rough measurements on this one on my truck:)
 14.5 22.5 8
 x143 3	15.47 25.79 10.32
Theres a few others that seem to have the right end fitting and might work
in a toy, I don't know what the valving is like on these, and they might
not be available in the 9000 series:
 x198 15.21 25.23 10.02
 x202 15.16 24.21 9.05
 x230 14.57 22.57 8.00
x=5 for 5000series, 9 for 9000 series. specs are for 5000 series, but the
9000s are supposed to be really close to this. Rancho info is from their
 1995 catalog, except where noted.
Stock (as measured by me)	13 21 8
I got some trailmaster info too. They have at least 3 series of shocks...
 xx530 0 13.98 22.51 8.53
 xx740 3-4 15.36 25.39 10.03
Turns out I have Rancho 5144s right now. I'm gonna try to get 'em all the
way compressed and all the way extended tomorrow and see if they are indeed
 limiting my articulation.
Another interesting thing I noted is that the right shock is mounted much
less vertical than the left, which should mean that the effective damping
rate would be higher on the left, and the travel should be better on the
 right...
I hope someone finds this useful.

Well, here's the deal. I have an opportunity to get a 4" Trailmaster IFS
lift for my 87 pickup. The guy wanting to get rid of it wants to swap me
for the items needed to bring his truck back to stock height (shocks,
 rear
ubolts, steering arm, idler arms, bumpstops). He will give me all the
 lift
brackets, rear blocks (yuck), steering components and shocks.
My questions are: Does anybody on the list use a Trailmaster lift? Pros
 and cons?
Looks pretty easy to install, is it? ( I've done clutches, head gaskets,
timing chains, motor swaps, lockers, etc.) Opinion? good move or bad
 move?
I have a 4 in. Trailmaster lift on my truck and I like it a lot. The
ride was very hard at first but after the first few hundred miles it
softened up quite a bit and is perfectly livable now. It also is very
stable going around turns and on the highway, even above 70 mph. The
only negative I have seen, and it might not be the lifts fault is if you
are going slow and you turn the wheel all the way and the suspension has
to flex, it makes a creaking noise sometimes. Does anybody know what
this is? Is it nothing to worry about?

 Jeff,
That creaking noise is the steering stops on the knuckle rubbing
against the A-arm as the suspension flexes. You're getting
metal-to-metal contact which a little grease would help to alleviate. It
has nothing whatever to do with your lift.

Sounds like you just need to put a dab of grease on the steering stops.
There are two per wheel, right up next to the lower wishbone, on the
knuckle. You can also get new stops from toyota, they're not that
 expensive I hear.

It might be worse than that. I looked the other day and found that I had
broken two of those stops off. I guess that explains the creaking even
 better...

 Neil,
From that spelling there was no need to mention the UK!
Anyway, what width are the rims? If they are 6" (15cm to you) I highly
recommend wider wheels. The previous owner of my truck used the factory
6" wheels for the 31x10.50 tires he bought. The resulting "roll" from
the wheel "sloshing" back and forth in relation with the tread made the
truck very unsteady to drive especially in corners. Just driving in a
straight line was a challenge. If the sidewalls are squished in too
close to one another it defeats any rigidity it might have and allows
the tire to "roll under" while cornering. The resulting 'lurch' is
decidedly bad for the blood pressure! BTW the Grabber line is an
excellent tire! I managed over 100,000 miles on a set of AP's on my last
vehicle. Granted, it was very light, but I still think I got excellent
service from them. Good luck and remember, the SHINY side goes UP!

Shouldn't be a problem. I know many people using the stock rims with
31" tires. Personally I have 31"s on my stock SR5 rims (7" rims), they
 fit/look great.

It depends on the width of the original rims. I wouldn't run a 31x10.5 on
anything less than a 7" wide rim; if the rims are a bit less, say 6.5", you
should probably run a 9.5" wide tire. Both sizes should fit without any
 problem on your runner.
 Good luck,

don't find yourself on here, it probably because you didn't enter all
your info on the Bio, and I simply don't have the time to chase it down
anymore. If you send it to me I'll add you.
I see a lot of people with "soon" or "just applied" in the TLCA member
field on their bios, if you've gotten your number since you sent your
Bio, send it to me and I'll add it for you.
