I had to heat up the plug with a propane torch and pound a 24mm
(or was it a 23mm?) twelve point wrench over it to get mine off. That was
the only thing that would work as I broke an easy out off trying to get it
 out.

Depends too if you're running single or double shock application 9000s.
9012s are made for double shock applications so they are valved much
better for our lighter Toys (when used singly).

It's a tiny drain. Three drops of PVC cement was all it took to seal it

I've been using a pair of 25mm ammo boxes for a number of years now. They
fit along the bed sides between the fenderwell and the tailgate. They are about
exactly the width of the fenderwell too. They are waterproof and hold quite a
bit of goodies. I think I paid about $20 each for them. I painted them to match
 the color of my truck.

Ok so read Jay's write up on measuring shock length at:
 http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/toyota/travel.html
and you went out and put a couple of low riders under opposite wheels
and now have the measurements for your new shocks. So you head down to
you local off road shop and ask for a shock that is "X" long compressed
and "Y" long extended and they give you that "Why can't you just order
shocks by the year and model" look. Well after manny requests I have
taken the Rancho catalog and put most of the sizes of RS5000 and RS9000
shocks online. Now you can see what size each part number is. Look for
the link off my main page. All of the sizes you are likly to need are
 there.

Of course the Snap On truck will have 'em!
Try getting "Impact" sockets as they the to be 6 points. They're also pretty hard
 to break as well :)

After speaking with my boss today, and spending the day bumming rides off
my co-workers,i decided i need my truck back in a hurry. After thinking
it over i've decided to hold off on the 4.3 swap until i have more time
to do the swap the right way, unhurried.I'm still going to buy the 4.3 i
mentioned before, and i'm going to gather up all the parts i need for the
 install.
In the meantime,i found a great deal on a 1985 Toy short box, regular
cab.Its pretty rusty, but the drivetrain is great, and the engine was
 rebuilt a few years ago.It comes with a 4" Trailmaster lift,31" tires
 and a 22R.All for $800 Canadian.
The problem is that my truck has a 22RE.What will it take to convert
this 22R to 22RE status in my truck? Are all the sensor locations there?
Is there a difference in the heads?I heard before that the cams are
different, but what else do i need to know?
 Thanks in advance,

Sounds like you'll most likely need to pull out a tape measure and start
making some measurements. You'll most likely need to build new mounts
to accomodate the travel of your springs. Actually I've seen complete kits
too that didn't have the optimum length shocks.....relocated mounts or not.

Just to add to this about line locks. A 'friend of the club' (not actually
 a member)
installed a front brake line lock specifically for winching purposes and he
 swears by it.
The not so obvious reason for this is, when winching, you want to have the
 truck in neutral
or you can ruin your front drivetrain by overloading it. So otherwise you
must have someone in the truck with their foot on the brake. (this is
assuming of course you aren't trying to get yourself out of a fix.) Being
able to winch with no-one in the cab is just that much safer.

Ok, folks, this is really not meant to be insulting.
It's meant as a learning experience.
First - the shock absorbers on a truck provide damping, not dampening.
Damping is slowing movement. Dampening is making something wet.
Second - a device that makes 110 volts AC out of 12 volts DC is called an
inverter, not a converter. I guess converter is correct (unlike
dampening), but it's really called an inverter. I should know, at home I
get my electricity from solar panels which charge a 12vdc battery bank,
which powers my INVERTER, which powers my lights and radios. It's called
an inverter because it take the current that is going in only one
direction and changes it to go in both directions by inverting the
direction (kinda lame example I know, but my dictionary isn't here).
Speaking of inverters, Chris Geiger's install of one in his 4Runner is
very nice! I really like the switched outlet. Very cool Chris!
Anyways, I hope I wasn't insulting or whatever. It's just been driving me
nuts every time I see "dampening" instead of "damping". And now we all
 know the right terms!

Do you know the inside dimentions? Where can I get some? Metal or plastic? I
have some smaller metal ones, but the seals never work quite right.
See, I was thinking that I would use the boxes for all of my parts & tools
storage, and also mount my air compressor in one too. This would be
permanently plumbed to the rear bumper/airtank. I know the boxes I was
looking at will be big enough for what I want, but I am worried they will be
too big to fit properly over the wheel well.

Just checked my dictionary on this one,Eli.The correct term IS
 dampening,not damping.
Dampen:1 to check or diminish the activity or vigor of:
 damp:3 moisture
 Secondly,doesn't a invertor convert 12VDC to 110VAC?This would make it a
convertor as well as an invertor
 Not a flame either.

From: Eli Madden Subject: Zen and the Art of 4-Wheeling
So, with the good weather and my Toy finally running good and reliable
again, I've been FINALLY wheelin' a whole bunch recently! It's so cool to
get back out on the trails in my truck.
I've noticed that I think I'm getting to be a better driver. I hate to
sound like I'm bragging or something, but I really think it's true. I'm
 learning to FLOW.
I've ridden bicycles for years and years, and long long ago learned about
flowing movements on them. On mountain bikes I learned all about picking
lines (though my truck has taught me a LOT about spotting mud depth and
soil firmness). And for the most part I've known about picking lines in my
truck, but I WAS GOING TOO FAST.
I'm fairly new at this 4wd thing. I've been reading magazines for years,
killed a used Jeep Cherokee in a month, and beat way too many cheap cars,
but I only got my Toyota 1.5 years ago, September '96.
Last summer I beat it REALLY hard. I put 3" front springs and real shocks
on it early summer, and that gave me the capability to take big hits and I
did. I also revved it like crazy in mud.
Well, last October my engine broke it's timing chain so I decided to
rebuild it. And sure enough, doing all that work (and more!) is giving me
 better appreciation for the truck.
But, not only am I being kinder to my truck but I don't get stuck as much.
I don't leave as many ruts (they don't know you were there if ya don't
leave ruts). I can climb better then ever. I can wiggle through
smaller than ever gaps and not dent my doors anymore (scrapes just show
you USE your 4WD). And I do it all with increasing confidence. And it's
confidence, not the foolishness I had before. I can tell that I'm doing it
 better and it feels GOOD.
I can now FEEL how much traction my tires are getting. I'm paying
attention more and only giving it as much gas as it needs (havn't I read
that somewhere before?) to get over/through obstacles. Even spinning my
tires to get through mud, I don't rev it so hard that they spin
uselessly. I can tell when they are giving max traction. Could be because
I have a working, quiet exhaust now and I can hear things better.
I've read all this stuff before, but still went a little too fast and gave
it a little too much gas. Just recently, something CLICKED.
And for the most part, I've been driving where only 4 Wheelers, dirt bikes
and snowmobiles go. Try that in a full size!
 I didn't see any signs.......

I have an 85 SR5 22RE with factory AC. It still works great but when I
turn off the AC, the compressor clutch screams for like 5 minutes maybe
longer, then fades away. As soon as you put the AC back on and the clutch
enguages, it goes away. Anyone know if the clutch can be rebuilt or if I
need a new clutch, or a whole compressor. Thanks,

I was told by someone that oem toyota filters keep a specific oil pressure which plays a big part in the timing chain tensioner, and going with an aftermarket filter somehow comprimises timing chain life. Can anyone confirm, add , or tell me if there is any truth to this.

From: "Neil McMullen" Subject: oil capacity / cheap factory parts
I have come to the following conclusions regarding the right oil to use when
I change my 5-speed and transfer case fluids... Redline
Okay, so i'l need to order the Redline MTL for the 5-speed and some of the
regular Redline for the transfer case (if this is wrong let me know). Well
here is a dumb question. Since there are no Redline dealers around here and
I can't find a straight answer in my Chilton manual help me out fellow
Toyota owners!!! How many quarts does my transmission and transfer case
 actually hold (1992 Toyota 4x4 22RE 5-speed vin 4TARN01P7N*******). I don't
want to order too much or too little, especially at the price of $7 per
 quart.
Also I asked before but no responses, so here it goes again. Who sells the
cheapest factory Toyota parts (I plan getting some general maint. items like
fuel filter, cap, rotor, plug wires) and don't want to pay full dealer price
like I do right now (not to mention having to drive 50 miles each way)....
All help and or suggestions are welcome!

I just changed my water pump 3 weeks ago and now the new pump start making
the squealing noise again. It's a Toyota Remanufactured unit. They come
with a one year warranty but what about the labor charges?
Anybody has any experience like this. Is there a chance Toyota will cover
everything? I bought the water pump from a local dealership and did the
 job myself.
I should go with the new unit instead of the rebuild unit. I get the
rebuild unit because they do not stock a brand new unit.
BTW: my local dealership quotes the price for the new Turbo water pump was
 listed $79.99 retail
New 22RE water pump listed for $130
Rebuild 22 RE water pump listed for $ 65
Both are the same unit but they have their own part number. It doesn't
make sense that it makes so much difference in the price, maybe my dealer
is wrong. But for anybody whose looking for a replacement water pump try to
get the turbo unit since it was the same part but so much cheaper.

Simply put, the fuel pump is shot. The inner diaphram will leak fuel out
the vent hole when this happens. Not unusual at all.

It has the gullwing doors and has plenty of storage. Those roll bars are

up some space but there is still a lot of space. I mounted my cb on top of

(excellent view from the top!) Take the Eagle Lakes exit, pass under
the freeway, go away down the pavement, and take the first right. This
should put you at a little staging area with some rest rooms. Directly
across from the building is a trail heading up to Signal Peak. If you
want to check out Signal Peak without the challenge, it can be reached
by taking off at the Cisco Grove exit (next one up from Eagle Lakes).
The gas station at Cisco Grove also has air if you don't have a
compressor.> Anyway, if anyone would be interested in taking a trip up there this coming> weekend (either Saturday or Sunday) contact me directly and if there's enough> interest let's go!> I would love to go, but I just put a lift on my Tacoma, and have a few
more things to do before I take it off the pavement. (Longer brake
 lines, fender flares, etc.)

anyone know if the Lock Rite is the only thing available for Tacomas? I

 Greetings,
First of all, let me say kudos to the participants in this informative and
entertaining list. I'm I long time Toy enthusiast, with a history that
 includes an ill-fated, 2 month high-school fling with a baaad FJ40. I have
higher hopes for a recently acquired '88 std cab EFI - it's bone stock and
has an incredible number of little plastic panels on the dash in place of
options, but its mechanically solid. It'll see most of its action in N.
Wisconsin, where bad logging roads are about as nasty as it gets, so I
don't see a need for major mods. I was wondering if there was any
 like-minded folks (i.e., non-rock crawler/mud-boggers) who have any
favorite, cost efficient add-ons to make stock trucks even more
durable/enjoyable. On that note, are K&N filters worthwhile? Thanks in
 advance,

 David,
The couple of snorkle designs I have seen by Allen Jensen and many
 others
who have used similar designs have the 3.0 V6 engine. The air intake
 goes
from the airbox into the fender. Our 22R-Es pull air from the opposite
 side
of the airbox, requiring a different design. If you can come up with
something that works and is not restrictive, I'd sure like to see it!
It shouldn't be too difficult--but it will be more difficult than on the
 V6
because a snorkle design on the 22R-E will take up more room in the
 engine
 compartment.
