To: "Toy4x4@tlca.org" If you have a 89-95 V-6, check this out!
 I have a 93' 4Runner SR5 V-6. The odometer currently sits at about
115,000. I bought it from one of the local Toy dealers here in Denver
back in August with a little over 100,000. Well, like many people who
love their trucks but didn't know about the head gasket problem, I was
quite nervous. I started watching this group all the time. About 2-3
months ago my truck started getting really bad gas mileage. Then a
couple weeks ago it started running rough at startup. However, I didn't
have any problems with lost coolant or coolant in the oil.
I figured it needed a tune up. Sure 115,000 miles. Well, I happened to
be at the dealership getting a cap and rotor (try to do the easy stuff
myself). Just for kicks I figured I would a service manager how much a
tune up there would cost. Well, he starts going on about this head
gasket problem. Do you loose coolant? Is your oil milky? Blah Blah.
Well, it turns out that Toyota supposedly issued an advisory in late
December about the "defective" head gaskets and they will scope my
 engine for free!
Well, to end it. I scheduled it for the test and when I brought it in
the service manager told me that they would check Toyota's record and if
mine had never been replaced they would do it anyway. Whether it needed
it or not. GREAT!! Turns out it was leaking slightly at #6 (where it
usually does), it was also fouled there (bad gas mileage and low
power). I got them to do the timing belt, tune up, and alignment. The
whole thing cost me $230.00 and they gave me a rental car for three days
 FREE.
My truck is running great and has a ton more power. If you have one of
these years I would encourage you to contact your dealer's service
manager Tell them this story if they give you any hassle. It's worth
the job even if it is not life or death at the moment. It's about time
that Toyota admitted there was a problem. However, did anyone receive a
 letter about this "advisory"?

David I'd imagine you could be right in all fairness the truck in question on my page was very robust. I watched him spin his 38inch tires, twist and bounce the truck all over the place for two days and it seemed to take it fine. Case in point it's still good. Now he did as you suggest have a real nice full cage that was attached to the body at places.
It was originally a show truck till he bought it off his Bro then he never washed it again:) I think it looks better with the mud and stuff covering up all the murals and such.
You wouldn't even wanna see all the dirty colored wires and insulation under the hood, ther is like PINK stuff in there as I recall:)

I own an 89 Hilux Extra Cab 2.8 Diesel. The 2.8 Diesel motor is a bit of a
gamble with a few of them breaking crank shafts (as mine did). I had the motor
rebuilt and then fitted a safari turbo charger and I LOVE IT. It's pretty
economical, pulls like a trian (very small one) and runs beutifully underwater
(with a snorkel of course). I have just done over 100,000K's since the rebuild
and have never had it serviced at the shop. Every 5,000 K's I change the oil and
oil filter. Every 10,000 K's I change the air cleaner and fuel filter. That's
it. It never misses a beat. If you like to know more....just ask.

Is this diesel engine the same as Daihatsu Rocky diesel?
I have the same problem with my 88 Daihatsu Rocky 2.8 diesel.
This engine are very common to break the crankshaft if you rev it past the redline.
I know that Daihatsu & Toyota have an affiliation and they even sell the rocky as Landcruiser in a few countries.

Check out the Jake Brake page at:

There are several differnt varieties, some that just put an exhaust restriction
in (exhaust brake = quiet) and some that fool with the valve timing (engine
brake = noisy). So many cool things you can do with a diesel engine.

I've seen all kinds of weird problems with the rear window.
For those of us who write code for a living - its got alot of error trapping!
There are sensors in the door to detect
if the wiper is going - block the window from going down
if the window is not all the way up - dont allow the wiper or fluid
(I believed) if the cover top is off, dont allow the window to work
 (it would fall off)
if the door is open dont allow the window to work
Its the last that can drive ya bats.
There are sensors on each of the latches (one on each side of the
 gate)
If these are NOT working - you may get erratic behavior like you describe.
Ive had this happen with a door that latched on one side but didnt
quite latch on the other. It allowed the window to work a little bit and then
froze. But it would work from the key becuase the act of using the key
pushed the door in enough to trip the sensor..

To: After reading the archives about the best bang for the buck muffler I went
with the Dynomax. I had a local muffler shop install it. I basically took it
to them and said "I want a Dynomax Super Turbo". I had looked up the OEM fit
muffler at http://www.a-1performance.com/ which they didn't have. So they
installed an oval with 2.5" in and outs as well as 2.5" tail pipe. They were
also able to stuff it way up under the truck. I couldn't believe the
difference it made in performance. My old muffler always made a
ffffftttttttt sound when giving it the juice like it was clogged. It wasn't
it was just small. Now my exhaust is a little louder and sounds a lot like
the newer stock 4Runners. It sounds good and drives a lot better from 2500
 to 3000 RPM's. If you're contemplating a new muffler I'd say get a Dynomax
SuperTurbo. My friend is getting one for his '90 xtra cab V6.

Gear has been said to be doing Taco R&P's, available for March
or so. I would encourage everybody thinking about regearing
their Taco to call Motive (they have a web site), and asking
them about R&P sets. Another company that I called said they
were guageing demand for Taco R&P sets on the sales of lift
kits. When I pointed out the chicken & egg problem with that
strategy, the company rep admitted the problem was the T-100.
Many companies gear up to offer aftermarket parts for that
vehicle, then it was redesigned 2 years later, so all their
work was for naught. Not to mention its stellar sales record...
Bottom line - Call Motive Gear and encourage them to
 produce gears!

These are pretty good tires (I got my 32's from costco for 105), and so
 far we've had the 30x9.50's, 31's, 32's and 33's (on about 6 different
trucks). They work great, clean out real nice (better than bfg's IMO).
But there are a few things that BFG beats them out on hands down.
Wear: the laredo's last a while, but they definately wear down faster
than I expected. Also, when I'd go wheeling with my friend's running
exactly the same setup, only BFG mud's, mine always had a few more
'chunks' missing afterwards. Neither tire is perfect--the bfg chunks
off more than I expected too--but the laredo does it more.
The other thing, is that the big spacing between the lugs let's big
sharp rocks get at the carcass of the tire super easy. Only punctured
one this way so far, but it happened a bit too easilly.
But a set of these (from costco anyway) for 120 each, *including*
lifetime mount/balance/repair and studding isn't half bad. For the
money, on a low mileage mud and snow type of truck they're real hard to
 beat.

To: Toy4x4@tlca.org> The Toyota Manual describes different thickness clips to be used during> u-joint replacement. The ones I got from NAPA had one set of clips> which left a little (maybe .010") slop.
The Spicer u-joints come with two sets of three pairs of different thickness
clips and instructions. The idea is to measure the gap on the inside of
the yoke, and use the matching clips to center the joint in the yokes. Mine
always seem to match up with the default thickness clips, maybe these joints
are also used on other driveshafts?>The problem is that as you pound one cap in (to get the other>cap out), there isn't enough clearance to get the other cap>all the way out. In order to get the other cap off - you have to>"crack/shatter" the edges of the two caps that run 90 degrees>to the cap you are removing. This takes time and brute force :(
I find I can pound one side out, then grab the cap with a pliers to get
it the last little bit out of the yoke. Then pound on the joint itself,
with the small socket, back in the other direction to push the other
cap back through its side of the yoke. The pounding gets easier once the
 caps start moving.
This is one of my favorite jobs .... My thumb finally has healed after
whacking it with my 3 lb sledge on the 4th of July. I now grease those
Spicers every oil change, or whenever I think of it.

Haven't you heard of the "inline" V6? hehehe ... No offense - I just think
it's funny that he never looked at the engine at all. Even people who
 don't know ANYTHING about cars/trucks - look at the engine... It's a
 given.

try calling Hella ( ads in all the mags) to check on that "3 months from
Australia" part. They are the US dustributors, and unless they are way
backordered, the TJM bumpers are stored in & shipped from outside Atlanta, GA.
If you mean the T17 with optional grillguard hoop, I have this one. I bought
another one (returned it though) last summer, and it totaled $516 - bumper &
hoop. try talking to them. Every time I talked to someone else the price
kept coming down. I don't think Perf. Prod. shows the hoop in their ads, but
it goes in the holes where they show the Hella lights. it is a 3" hoop that
looks kinda lika a nerf bar mounted on top of the bumper. I like it. oh,
mine is steel - the only way to go.

Someone described what it does when your engine is burning oil. Well, mine
has occasional puffs at startup. What are possible causes of this and
 possible fixes?

 Worn piston rings
 Worn valve seals
 Worn valve guides
 Inoperative crankcase ventilation system
 Overfilled crankcase
The PCV valve and hoses should be free of obstructions.
Make sure the crankcase oil level is correct. If too high, the oil can
foam in the cylinder head and run past the valve seals and down the
 guides.
Worn valve guides allow oil into the combustion chamber. Soulution:
 Valve job.
Bad valve stem seals allow the oil lubing the top end of the valves to
run down into the combustion chamber as well. These can be replaced with
the cylinder head on the vehicle.
Worn rings, well, major engine teardown and overhaul time.
Sounds like you have bad seals, from your comment about a bit of smoke
 upon startup.

Some people just aren't very bright. It escapes me how it would take a
week to figure it out,and if it did,he should stay with the least amount
 of horsepower available!
