Thanks for the info, Scott. That's good to know. I only have 50K on mine

I've talked to one, and he is still deciding (it looks doubtful for
him), but I'm going wheeling with somewhere between eight and ten
friends tomorrow, and I know at least one of them (whom I do not work
with and therefore have not yet been able to ask) is looking for 33's.
I'll pop the question to the group tomorrow and see if anyone is
 seriously interested.
BTW, I'm going to Los Coyote Indian Reservation, which is part of the
Rubicon Trail. Wish me luck... I got my first ding there last weekend
on my passenger door from a water crossing with very large type rocks
:-( You had to crank right then left (It was tight for the J**p's with
me), all in about two and a half feet of water, and I slid in a large
type rock of the door munching variety. O'well, it's a truck.

I periodically exercise the front drive line even though I have ADD

I've never found myself wondering if the front end was pulling.
Generally, when I'm in a situation where I need 4wd, I wait till I NEED
it, and that point it would be painfully obvious if it wasn't working.>> For me, 1 and 4 were of the greatest importance in looking for a> truck with manual hubs. I used to do the same thing with my '85 Toy with manual hubs. I still
say ADD is a major improvement (for me) over manual hubs. No getting out
to check/lock the hubs when I need 4wd. Just flip the lever and go. You
and the others have all made valid points, but they just don't apply to
my situation, I guess. I'm not sure how much you'd have to pay me to go
back to manual hubs, but I know it would be far more than $100. :)

I recently pulled out a stuck Nissan pathfinder that was driving up a
hill that got difficult before the driver put the truck into 4WD. Once
stuck and about to roll over the driver was unable to get the 4WD
to engage because the drive line was under stress. The lesson is
don't wait until you need it or you may regret it. The ADD system
can make it difficult to get into gear under some conditions.
I have found it much to go into 4WD with the ADD system
 disconnected and manual hubs installed.

When I said I wait till I need it, perhaps that was a poor choice of
words. Then again, not counting that time I was sidehilling a sand dune
north of Las Vegas, I'm not often in situations where I'm stuck and
 about to roll. :)
Point well taken, but you still can't have my ADD hubs!

 YOU WROTE:
I am interested in the process you described to Karl. I will probably
be in mine sometime in the near future and have never been in a "chunk"
 before.
You stated:>You setup the gears by feel first to>get them close for measuring, then setup the dial indicator>perpendicular>to the pinion to measure the movement between the ring and pinion>(backlash). You must hold the pinion from moving during this>operation, and check for any runout on the ring gear with the indicator.
Is the dial indicator looking at runout of the carrier in the axle
dimension? How is this adjusted? I guess I'll go pull out the manual
 and review this.
This is my next project after getting my 22re put back together (block
at machnie shop right now). The rear end makes a droning sound at about
70mph that I've been unable to locate externally. Not tires! Not
U-joints (replaced these a couple of months ago). Ideas?

 Differential BACKLASH AND PRELOAD
CLIF,differential setup is not really a hard thing to do if you have the
proper tools.A dial indicator with a magnetic base is essential. You just
can't "feel" 0.01".Regardless,even if you do set them up yourself,i
would still bring them to a shop to be checked out. That will show you
any mistakes you might have made, and you will know for next time.
The dial indicator is used to measure the backlash (clearance)between
the R+P gears. It is also used for checking for any runout or wobble in
 the ring gear.
 Check out http://www.thegrid.net/thedrivetrainpage/diff.htm
To get bearing preload set properly is a little different because it is
done in many different ways. The method i prefer(i have used all of
them)is to 1) set the backlash close by feel
 2) tighten the bearing adjusters slightly
 3) setup the dial indicator and check backlash
 4) adjust the bearing adjusters to get lash to spec
 (0.06- 0.10)
 5) use an o ring(dental)pick to check the rollers in the
diff carrier bearings. What you want to do is back
off one of the bearing adjusters until you can rotate
the rollers with the pick while the bearing is
 stationary.
Then tighten the adjuster until you can't turn
the rollers with the pick.Tighten the adjuster enough
to get the lock tab bolted back up.You're done!
Do step 5 with the diff rotated so the carrier weight is on the bearing
that you're not working on,preferably the ring gear side. You only need
to adjust one of the bearings because it will affect the preload on both
bearings. You really dont need a lot of preload and they can be run at
almost zero preload. There is another way to set preload thats more high
tech, but really unneccesary. This method uses the dial indicator to set
it.I have used both methods with equal success.
After you have the bearing adjuster clips bolted back on the caps go
back and check lash and runout or any differencs in lash around the
 gear.
The most important thing to remember is cleanliness.Everything must be
spotless. Also I personally do not oil anything until all the gears are
all setup(except pinion bearings wich i oil after i set depth).By
leaving everything dry you will have more accurate readings and i find
that the dirt tends to cling to the oil when it gets on your hands, tools
and everything else. One thing to watch for is dirt or grit between the
ring gear and the diff carrier,it will mess up all setup procedures. If
you find you have some ring gear runout, check for dirty parts.
CLIF I HOPE MY METHOD WORKS FOR YOU!I HOPE THIS HELPS OUT,AND IF YOU
HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL,JUST ASK!

Good for you. I've been doing my own stuff for 5 years now. I started after
the Victoria, BC, ESSO car clinic decided to screw me. My $500 EFI fuel pump
episode with them really pissed me off. They charged me $60 to pump
out the tank because "your truck doesn't have a drain plug in the tank"
Crap. They also did a nice job of snapping various bolts and not telling me
about them. $300 for the pump, $200 for labour. The nice thing about
doing your own stuff, is you can use what you would have been charged in
labour to buy tools for the job. Then you'll always have them.
By the way, in fairness too all the Midas guys that actually can and do a good job,
specifically which midas 'screwed you over bad?'

 1) For those who will be in Ridgecrest Friday night some of us are going to
get together for dinner. Meet in front of the Econo Lodge office at 7:30

 2) There will be a short driver's meeting at 7:15 Sat. morning in front of

 3) One more item to bring should be an extra pair of shoes. It is possible
to get your feet wet going to Surprise Canyon. The trail drops into the

I'm taking a short trip to Las Vegas next week. I'll be out of town Mon -
