Depends on what all you replace. I had one roller bearing going bad.
My synchros look fine and are within spec and my needle bearings look
fine. I replaced all four roller bearings which are around $40 a
piece. The gasket and seal kit from Toyota is $63. If you replaced ALL
the bearings and synchros, it would be big $$$.

Speaking of this, does anyone know if the 1988 V6 trucks used the same 5
speed transmission that was designed for the turbo 4 cylinder? I know
that '89 brought on a new transmission that was based on the Supra 5
speed, even though the Supra engine is an inline 6. I'm curious because
the '89 and up trannys are higher geared.

Hi All,..
I have a minor problem. My antenna is busted. Actually,.. the plastic toothed
rod that is inside the antenna is missing about the last 3 inches. The motor is fine
and I cannot justify spending almost 200.00 on an entire assembly at the dealership.
Can anyone help?

Usually you can buy replacement masts. All you have to do is some type of
sequence when turning on the radio and the antenna will come all the way out
with your help. To install the new one you just feed the plastic rod back in
and re-power the antenna. There are more specific instructions in the toyota
service manuals that detail the procedure.

have slowly been customizing as money will allow. It now has a custom cd stereo system with
Kenwood and Bazooka componets, B&M shifter, Grant steering wheels, custom made front bumper, tail
gate net, Dick Cepek lights, and will soon have 3 1/2 inch lift from Northwest Offroad.

84 was the first year, had 22R carbureted engine, solid front axle
85 had the 22RE fuel injected motor, solid axle. This is a great year for building into a trail rig because of these two features.
86 was first year of IFS. I think Turbo model debuted this year
87 same as '86 (basically....)
1988 V6 available, turbo no longer available.
1989 basically same as 88.
They're ALL good...

I don't recall who makes it, it might be a TrueTrac, but the locker is
not made by TRD and is just re-sold. TRD will admit who makes it if
you ask them (or ask more about the item due to the description).

This is not true, both the TRD website, and the guys at 4WPW in Sac. said
it does not disturb the R&P.
The Detroit TrueTrac brochure states " Detroit TrueTrac is quickly and
easily installed using a simple bolt in process, which takes only a few hours
by an experienced mechanic."
It also says " Easy to install, no special tools or case modifications."
The toyota website says: "No set up,
special tools or calibration is required because the ring and pinion
gears are unaffected."
So I don't think there will be a problem with setting up the ring and pinion,
so does anybody actually know?

FWIW: The trutrac DOES require R&P setup, special bearings for the front
if ifs, etc. It replaces the carrier.

From: Chris Caldwell Subject: Tacoma Lift
To: 4x4 digest Recently, John McCool posted to the list that he had installed a downey
lift on his Tacoma. Well I have a question for him or anyone else that
has replaced the stock upper shock/spring mounting plate. I'm talking
about the one that the shock bolts to and has the 3 studs that mount ot
the truck. What I want to know is, what is the outside diameter and are
both sides identical in shape? If they are identical, will they fit
together tightly? For quite some time I have been contemplating making a
spacer for a mild lift in the front accompinied by longer shackles in
the rear. I just wasn't sure if it was a worthwhile venture. Yesterday I
saw an ad for the same concept on a Jeep TJ. So maybe there is some
merit to the idea.

If you find out any information on how to tell the difference between
the "small input shaft bearing" 81-82 transmission and the "large
input-shaft-bearing" 83 transmission (without removing it from the
vehicle), I would very interested. Also, could you tell me if there are
any ID numbers on your housing (and what they are). My housing has
W0923 upside down on the drivers side.
Thanks for any info.
