From: Galen Sinkey Subject: 3.4 V6 gasket problem?
To: "'Toy4x4@tlca.org'" Wondering if anyone has heard about the
infamous Toyota 3.0 V6 head gasket
 problem affecting the 190hp 3.4 V6?
A guy up on Compuserve is yelling about how
all the west coast dealers are buried in
 96 & 97 4Runners with blown head gaskets
and that parts are not available. The dealers
around here (I'm in Iowa) don't seem to be
having any trouble with this and just wondering
if anyone here has heard about this or
experienced any engine trouble with their
 3.4 V6?

 About Jimmy's extra 3rd member:
IMHO, keep it. It's already paid for. Put a Detroit Locker in it, new
bearings, and a really low ring and pinion. You can swap it out in less
than 2 hours (I'm being realistic) and have a raging rear end for wheeling
adventures, and swap back to your open diff for extended highway drives.
Total cost should run about $550. Selling it will only get you gas money
 for 2 tanks.
 Buena suerte,
 - Nick

Married for 5 years, expecting our first
child soon. We needed a family vehicle (we had 3 vehicles,
all 3 were stick shift), thus the 4Runner
(we call it The Baby Cruiser; both because it was bought
for the baby and also because it looks like a
smaller version of our previous '92 LandBruiser).
Brandie, our canine companion (actually a rescued mutt,
but she doesn't think so), loves to ride in the back
with the rear window down :-). I'd like to join some

To: "'toy4x4@tlca.org'" I finally found the problem with my brake light fuses blowing. The
person or company that installed my camper shell onto my truck pulled
the power for the interior light from the left brake light wire. That
wire was grounding and blowing the fuse. I don't know if this would
help anyone in the future, but I thought posting a THANK YOU to all that
gave me advise would be in store.

I purchased the bolts for the roll-bar holes at a local 'mom and pop'
hardware store . They let me run out to the truck numerous times with
bolts to try in the holes. (I doubt if HomeBase or LumberJack would allow
anyone to do that ! ) I finally found NON-METRIC bolts that fit. They are
7/16" in diameter , 1.25" in total length , fine threads.
By the way, bolting your jack to the bar makes it a hassle to get at when
you need it on the trail. You may want to re-think that a bit.

I removed the stock radio-cassette-equalizer from my 1984 4Runner and
 replaced it
with a smaller, non-equalizer non-stock unit. The stock unit was large, with
the attached equalizer doubling the overall size . I currently have the new
radio and CB occupying the same space.
You can have the old unit, if you want it, free. You provide transport.
The radio/equalizer works fine, sounding great out of the 4 stock speakers.
However, the cassette deck doesn't sound very good. The tapes play, without
jamming, the mechanics are good, but the sound is lousy. No attaching hardware.
I understand you used to live in my neighborhood, Rancho Cordova, if you are
interested , perhaps you can have a friend/relative pick it up and hold
 it for you.

O.K., I'll bite. What is oxygenated gas? We don't seem to have it up here
 in the great frigid North.
BTW, my '95 4cyl, 5 speed 4Runner gives about 28 miles per imperial gallon
in warm weather, with my son driving. I drive a bit more aggressively, and
usually have a light utility trailer behind sometime during a tankful, and
get about 25. In winter that figure drops to about 22 to 25 miles per
 imperial gallon.
 I drive at about 2500 r.p.m., or 98 km/hr. My son, with a learner's permit,
drives usually on longer journeys, and at a conservative 88 to 90 km/hr. It
makes a significant difference in the range of the vehicle.

You can go down to any car stereo shop and talk to one of the guys who
actually installs the radios. Kinda get him to the side and ask to look
at the old radios. If you are nice enough, he might let you have a
factory radio. I used to work at one of these shops and we had an old
washing machine box full of old radios we removed from cars. You need
to know what you are looking for. I would slip the guy ten bucks if he
produced the radio. If that doesn't work, check your local junk yard.
They usually have the radios and the mounting hardware. Good luck!

Subject: Yota Bolt sizes, Hilift mounting
 To: " - (052)toy4x4(a)tlca.org" ,
EJ asked about what size the roll bar "unused" bolt hole was in the 4Runner.
In case people are wondering - that bolt hole is used as the upper tie in point
 for rear
seatl belts in the 1st generation 4Runners.
In general - Yota's use the following bolt sizes and pitches - they are ALL
 metric
 8mm x 1.25
 10mm x 1.25
 12mm x 1.25
 14mmx 1.50
Note that the 12mm and 14mm pitches are "finer" than standard GM/Ford pitch
 sizes for
those bolt diameters - thus making it harder to find bolts in those sizes. Taps
 in these
sizes are NOT commonly available. Vermont American makes them though - as well
 as
Hansen. A good hardware store can get them.
Also - 10mmm bolt "standard" thread in the US tends to be 10mm x 1.5 - also
 making the
search for bolts harder (but not impossible).
 To answer EJ's Q - I recall that the bolt is 12mm x 1.25.....
As far as mounting the Hilift in my 4Runner - I used the Conn-Ferr brackets and
 some ubolts
to mount the brackets to the bar. Ths supports the jack horizontally, and the
 brackets
are a "squeeze" fit on the jack - it does NOT rattle!
I dont have a bolt in the "lock " hole at this time - but one inserted would
 retain the jack in case
 of an accident.

Are shoulder belts for 1st gen 4Runners available? Mine just has lap belts for the rear seat.>> To answer EJ's Q - I recall that the bolt is 12mm x 1.25.....
That might be true; I thought I tried a 12mm bolt, but maybe I didn't.
12mm is in between the the 3/8 size I am using and the 1/2" size
 I know is too big...
