Action Alert !!

Source: Off-Road.com

The attached text is from SUWA. A few comments from me first. I am not pro strip mining for Southern Utah. I am, however, extremely pro four wheeling and mountain biking. This "bad Utah Wilderness bill" (as they put it), is bad in their terms because it limits their ability to limit OUR access.

I would urge anyone who enjoys, has enjoyed, or plans to enjoy fourwheeling in and around Moab to participate in this issue. This is important because once an area is designated "wilderness" you WILL NEVER see it again from your four-by vehicle. Unless you want to come on down to the Moab Easter Backpacking Safari in a few years (okay, a slight exagerration), I would ask that you make a call or two. Though I've never been to "Blanca", when Wayne put forth the cause of preventing closure...you bet I called!

If you do want to help, then read the following and contact the Senators with a message of yes to the Omnibus Parks Bill. "Thank you for your support" --Bartles & James

 ---> ----> HIGHEST PRIORITY ACTION ALERT <----  <----
*********************************************************
Folks--
[Sorry for the delay, we've been having problems with our server.]
IN A NUTSHELL: The Omnibus Parks Bill (Utah Wilderness) vote in the
Senate has been pushed back until next Wednesday (3/27), so we have a
few more days to call Senators to try to stop this horrible bill. If
you've already called, please call again (and again). If you haven't
called yet, please do so now. If we can win this vote, Utah wilderness
will be safe for the time being.
*** Also, please pass this information along to all your friends. ***
Below you will find:

particularly useful for the first-time callers among you.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] NEWS UPDATE
The vote has been pushed to next Wednesday because the debate and vote
on Senator Domenici's terrible grazing bill took longer than expected.
Debate will definitely begin at 10AM on Monday, at which point our
friends in the Senate will begin to filibuster the Omnibus Parks Bill,
which contains S884 (the bad Utah wilderness bill).
Sometime on Wednesday there will a "cloture vote". We don't want to
get too technical, folks. Basically there will be a vote on whether or
not the bad guys can end our filibuster of their bad bill. This is
*THE* vote we need to win.
Because of the rules of the Senate, our opponents will need to get 60
votes to win (not just a simple majority).
Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, who is leading the fight against
the bad Utah wilderness bill, is lining up support for his filibuster
attempt.
So, when you call Senators, tell them you know Bradley is going to
filibuster the Omnibus Parks Bill, and that you would like them to
support Bradley's filibuster.
10AM Monday might be a good time to turn on C-SPAN and learn how
congress works. We know all this stuff is kind of jargony and
technical, so if you have any questions, call Tom Price at (202)
546-2215.
[2] IN THE PRESS
In addition the favorable editorials we told you about last time (in
the Salt Lake Tribune and New York Times, among others), the Portland
Oregonian and Bergen County (NJ) Record (home of Sterling forest) have
come out against the Omnibus Parks Bill.
[3] PHONE NUMBERS
The capitol switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. You can quickly
reach any Senate or congressional office through this number. (When
the operator answers, say "Senator so-and-so's office please".)
The 800 numbers are still working. They are: (800) 962-3524 and (800)
972-3524. These numbers will connect you directly to the capitol
switchboard, but they are sometimes very busy. If you have trouble
getting through on the 800 numbers, please use the regular number,
since the call will cost less than a dollar and it is important that we
get these calls made soon.
Calls should be made between 8:30AM and 7PM (Monday - Friday), east
coast time.
Some of you have asked for email addresses and fax numbers. These can
be found at
http://www.vote-smart.org/congress or
http://www.xmission.com/~suwa/congress
Remember: phone calls are definitely more effective than either faxes
or email.
[4] WHO TO CALL
(a) Call the two Senators from your own state. If you're from Utah,
call Senators Dole and Daschle (the majority and minority leaders). If
you can't remember who your Senators are, see the above web pages, or
send email to Tom (cloud@capaccess.org) or Liz
(liz.mccoy@sierraclub.org).
(b) If you would like to make more calls, these Senators could use some
more encouragement. If you are from Utah, it is especially important
to call Senator Jeffords.
Jim Jeffords (R-VT)
Hank Brown (R-CO)
Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO)
William Roth Jr. (R-DE)
Jo Biden Jr. (D-DE)
Sam Nunn (D-GA)
Richard Lugar (D-IN)
Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS)
William Cohen (R-ME)
Olympia Snowe (R-ME)
James Exon (D-NE)
Mark Hatfield (R-OR)
Arlan Specter (R-PA)
John Chafee (R-RI)
John Warner (R-VA)
Charles Robb (D-VA)
Robert Byrd (D-WV)
[5] WHAT TO SAY
Tell the receptionist that you would like to the Senator to vote "No"
on the Omnibus Parks Bill, because it contains the Utah Anti-Wilderness
Bill. If you are more technically minded, you can ask the Senator to
vote support the Bradley filibuster.
If you're calling your own Senator, emphasis that you are from their
state and that the federal lands in Utah belong to all Americans.
If you're from Utah, emphasis that fact, and tell them that Senators
Hatch and Bennett are not doing a good job of representing the concerns
of ordinary Utahns.
If neither of the above apply, don't volunteer your state of residence,
since many offices won't ask you for it.
Also, ask the receptionist if the Senator has given any indication of
how he/she will vote. If you get a definite answer, please send email
to Tom Price (cloud@capaccess.org).
[6] SAMPLE PHONE CONVERSATION
[You dial (202) 224-3121 or one of the 800 numbers.]

Operator: "Capitol switchboard."
You: "Senator so-and-so's office, please."

Receptionist: "Senator so-and-so's office."
You: "Hi. I'm calling the Senator to urge him/her to vote 'No' on the
Omnibus Parks Bill. This bill contains some terrible provisions about
Utah wilderness, which is something I care very deeply about."
[If you're from the Senator's state, or from Utah, mention that
as well.] Receptionist: "Thank you. I'll relay this to the Senator."
You: "Also, has the Senator given any indication of how he/she will
vote? I plan to follow this issue closely."
Receptionist: [Some sort of answer]
You: "Thanks. Bye."
