As many may already know, the State of California has purchased additional
land for the expansion of Hollister Hills State Vehicle Recreation Area. Since
the purchase, the off-road park has come under some heavy fire from residents
and other interested parties who would much rather see the land put to
"other uses."
The opponents of the land expansion express a number of concerns, including
erosion and noise pollution, as reasons for not allowing the use of off-highway
vehicles on the new property. The opposition is strong, but the park's officials
are receiving some local support.
So far the debating has remained within the scope of the use of the new land.
Unfortunately, the latest twist of the opposition has been to call for the
closure of the park altogether! Local politicians have been listening to the
thoughts of those who wish for the state to sell Hollister Hills S.V.R.A. and it
is our concern that these officials may only be hearing comments from a
one-sided interest.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the threat to yet another
off-highway location by special interests. It is necessary that we all act now
to help insure that California's officials do not entertain the thought of
closing another of our recreational areas.
YOU CAN HELP!! It's as simple as writing a
letter. You don't need a computer, or even a typewriter! Simply handwrite a
letter explaining your concerns and your wishes to keep the park open with full
use of the land. WE DO NOT NEED NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING! Letters should be
limited to showing the benefits of areas such as Hollister Hills S.V.R.A.
Benefits may include, but are not limited to:
INCOME FOR THE COMMUNITY - the park draws visitors from outside the
area who purchase gasoline, food, vehicle parts, and services from local
businesses.
NEIGHBOR SUPPORT - the park and the Rangers who work there provide
free services to the local residents in the form of fire fighting, fire
prevention, and protection.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT - there are a number of organizations which use the
park, and there have been a number of contributions made to local charities and
institutions.
USER BACKGROUNDS - the park does not attract riffraff. Many
professionals such as doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc., use the park and have
an interest in off-highway vehicles. Perhaps you can include a brief background
in your letter.
USER INVOLVEMENT - safety clinics and other educational events are
held at the park throughout the year. Furthermore, the park is used by many
institutions such as the Boy Scouts of America and various automobile and
motorcycle manufacturers and magazines.
There are countless more benefits which are a direct result of Hollister
Hills and other off-highway areas like it. Please take a moment to help preserve
our sport. Your letter doesn't have to be long. It simply needs to convey your
concern and support for the S.V.R.A. location in Hollister and all the locations
around the state and the country.
