From: Ryan Richard Dias Subject: CV boot replacement?
Yesterday i had to replace the inner cv boot on my 92 v6 4x4 pickup. What
a lot of trouble i had with a simple basic job. I looked at a Haynes
manual, THESE THINGS ARE USELESS!!!!! The job looked like a .5hr at the
most, I spent 5hrs!
After taking the 6 driveline to diff. bolts off, I could not get it to
come appart enough to get it off of the bolts. Do you have to press the
bolts out???
Finally the back cover fell off and I riggled and giggled the darn thing
till I could get the "yoke" i think it is off (three circular bearings).
There must be a better way!!
If anyone could help me out with a little instruction, maybe next time
won't be so irritating. Thanz in advance.

Yes> I know they are $120, but how much was it with the installation?
When doing a solid front axle conversion there is no charge for
installation on the spacers, but if you just want the spacers installed
expect to pay about $80 for install labor per axle.
You could also check with your local tire shop. It may be easier to have
it installed closer to home. Any shop that has replaced a bad lug bolt
can do it. Just tell them you would like an estimate for replacing all
12 front bolts. Each bolts needs to be tapped out and new longer/bigger
ones tapped in.

I'm looking for a front driveshaft for a 1981 Toyota pickup. Of course it doesn't have to be an '81 as long as it's the same length and as a CV on the transfer case end. Well, do any of you run a standard driveshaft with u-joints on both ends for the front?
If you don't have one, but know of a fair market price that would be helpful too. I might know a guy who has one, but he won't give me a price because he doesn't know what it's worth and might keep as another spare anyway.
On mine, the CV part (at the transfer case end) is worn out and I cannot find anybody who rebuilds that part. Maybe I'm not looking at the right places. It still works, but will wear through soon enough. I need to replace it and keep this one as a trail spare or have it rebuilt if possible.

It should only take 45 minutes to an hour to remove and replace the axle
shaft. A little more if you servicing the boots.
There are three ways to do it. Toyota has a special tool that allows the
axle to be removed with only the bolts being removed. Ok none of us
except Jim Brink have this tool so on to the second way.
The second way is to remove the 4 bolts on the upper ball joint and
remove the joint. This allows just a hair more room to get the axle out.
Version three. I though this one up my self and is my favorite way.
Write down the alignment setting on the four cam adjusters. Then loosen
the adjuster nuts and turn the cam bolts until the lower arm is as far
out as it can go. Then remove and replace the axle. when putting it back
together remember to put the alignment cam bolts back to the same
setting.

The exact diameter will vary between manufacturers. You can try their
website, they often provide the exact specs. BF Goodrich is great for this:
http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/main.htm
(although they don't show a 225/75R15 size for the AT's or MT's).
Or you can do the math: [(225 * 0.75) * 2]/25.4 + 15 = 28.3"

Just FWIW,..
The main reflective parts of any automobile is the front bumper and grill. On
a vehicle like the vette, It's a rotating radiaor fan... it scatters radar
energy in all directions... especially back at the radar gun. Since a
radiator is finned through.. from font to back to allow air flow,.. there is
actually a LARGER radar cross section if the radiator is layed down at any
angle. It's all relative though.. the actual radar cross section on the
return is miniscule compared with the actual target size. A B52 only returns
about a 1-2 square foot reflection (about the size of a Canadian goose, eh?).
It also has to do with where a radar gun is (is there a lot of metal or a lot
of power lines near the gun?) and the weather conditions (rain, snow etc
deflects and absorbs radar energy). if you drove a vehicle that was perfectly
needle shaped (with NOTHING sticking out,.. like tires), and you drove
directly at the gun, radar energy would reflect rearward and to the sides,
with only a minimal amount of energy (1/1000th of 1 percent or so) returning
to the gun from your needle's tip. This is enough with the current state of
'police radar' to render you 'invisible'. Of course you could just build a
vehicle that was made completely of wood and rubber,.. no wiring, nails etc
(Liquid nails would work though!!!)

Spicer u-joint that fits. Although this is listed as a not-replacable item,
you can indeed replace it if you know what u-joints to buy. Once you know

Nope. Radar is non-discriminatory... it cannot tell who is doing what in a
group... that's the job of the officer when he looks up, after he get's a
warning on his gun that someone has exceeded his preset speed level. If, like
airplanes, cars had a transponder or IFF (Ident: Friend or Foe - military

When you say "tapped" in, do you mean pushed in with a press? I was under

The old style SS lines, like the ones I got, are not legal for street
use. I have never failed an inspection because of them (atleast for 5
years). But, if you have the new style with the spring on one end, those
are legal.

it!

Yes, GPS is inherently off due to the military considerations but,.. the
algorithm does change. I have never been more than 15 metres off, holding my
Garmin 12XL next to my Military issue GPS, with the proper codes (crypto)
entered for the day. I have on occasion been right on the money certain days.
As far as speed though,.. it's right on the money. What I like about my
Garmin is that if I program in a destination, I get absolute speed (ie; how
fast am i going) and speed relative to target. Cool.

WHAT?? SS brake lines not "street legal"?? What state is this? Are they
NUTS??
It disgusts me that a state can say that an improvement like SS lines are
NOT LEGAL, yet they let people drive around on those incredibly dangerous,
wimpy "space saving" spare tires they put in the trunks of most cars these
days.

Well, it probably was a clutch 'kit' - not just the friction disc. I'd
bet it was a stock toyota clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing for
that money.

$219 for a stock Toyota clutch is WAAAY too much. I think I paid less than
$100 for mine 2 years ago, but that was mail-order from Jay Marks Toyota.
I only paid $225 to have it installed (didn't have the time to do it myself,
was in a hurry), but it was a private shop, not a dealer. That included
having the flywheel turned.

Then yours aren't legal. There is a set that is legal that I see in the
mags but I can't recall who makes them. They use a spring to reduce the
forces at the connector. I guess one of the DOT tests is to put
twisting/bending motions at the connector.

I did buy these knowing that they were not DOT approved... I have run them

inspection time! This is in PA BWT.

Argh... I just took a look at the SS lines that I got from Downey a couple
of weeks ago, still in the plastic bags. No "springs" for strain relief.
There is absolutely NO MENTION in the Downey catalog or the included
documentation about these not being street legal. I think I will make a
phone call...

I called Downey, they told me that each state is different on this issue,
but that they are not aware of ANY state that has rejected them
specifically. They were not familiar with the sets with springs on them for
strain relief.
I then called the shop that does my annual inspection. They said they have
never heard of such a thing, and would have no problem passing a vehicle
with SS lines on it. They feel the same way that I do: SS lines are an
IMPROVEMENT over the OEM rubber lines.
I'm gonna put 'em on as planned.

DaveS wrote:> Believe it or not, I've had many vehicles over the years where the> speedometer and odometer do not agree. I realize this is hard to> believe, but I've seen it many times.
Actually not hard to believe at all. The odometer is strictly mecahical, a
fixed gear ratio. The speedometer is (at least used to be)
electro-mechanical, a coil of wire spinning in a magnetic field producing a
current that drives the needle. This also explains why the speedo error can
be different at different speeds, as this process is somewhat non-linear.
When I tested my truck after gear/tire swap, the odometer was exactly 10%
under but the speedo was 13% under at 60. So, I got a correction gear that
fixes the odometer, leaving my speedo still a bit off.
