I have been working on it for about a week, and I am still adding more as time
permits. Check it out & let me know what you like, don't like, etc. Please
don't be too harsh - I am still learning!
Also, I would really like to get some links to other Toy list members' pages
so email those to me directly please!

A CV on the rear drive shaft is needed if you run both a dual case and a
lift. The CV joint holds up well. Most people use a lengthened 1985
model drive shaft. The IFS front drive shaft uses a different CV joint
and does not have the needed droop for use in the rear. The longer
shackles work well with a rear CV joint because it rotates the rear axle
causing the pinion to point up more toward the tcase.

I read how you are going to through it under so you can still drive it,
I was wondering how you were going to stear it. Are you going to plop a

I'm thinking of sinking some money into modifications to my Tacoma to make
it a bit better on the rocks. Sadly, there are no crawler gears etc.
available for Tacos, and if Toyota makes another huge change on the next
truck model, causing Tacomas to be an evolutionary cul de sac, there may
never be... I was wondering if anyone has any insight into the direction
Toyota will go with future models. Is the next generation of truck likely
to continue to use the 3.4 platform and compatible transmissions and
t-cases? If so, as more of these trucks go off warranty and are put into
service on the trail is it inevitable that low volume specialty shops
catering to Toyota loyalists like Marlin Crawler and JP Eater will begin to
produce crawler gears etc. for the Taco and compatible trucks?
I can almost hear the 1st and second generation truck contingent snickering
 scornfully... I can't argue that starting with a 1st, 2nd, or third
generation truck would have made more sense but at this point I'm attached
 to my Tacoma!

That's how I understand their function. Depending on how you do it you
could use conversion fittings or cut off your metric ends and replace with
SAE fittings. You should be able to get conversion fittings from Earl's.

 Darren,
I'd take it as constructive criticism and not get too put off by it. Yes,
using the wrong word now and then, or misspelling something does sometimes
make a post harder to read, but as long as the idea comes across, it's okay.
I really doubt anyone on the mailing list expects perfect spelling and
 perfect grammer all the time.
Personally, my big problem is that I frequently go back and edit what I
write. One consequence of this is that I sometimes inadvertantly leave in
or take out the word "not", which has a tendency to give a sentence the
completely wrong meaning. I suspect misspelling words is the lesser sin.
If you do want to respond to the person that sent you this mail, say
"thanks". You might also want to point out to the writer that the pronoun
"I" should always be capitalized. And as someone else pointed out, there is
supposed to be a space after punctuation.
So okay, you look like a dumb-ass :-) At least you're not a hyprocritical
 dumb-ass!
 Take care.

P.S. Have you ever been to the hot springs at Saline Valley? I'm going to
stop there on my way to Mammoth Thursday and was wondering how long it takes
to get from the hot springs to Lone Pine. I want to get off the dirt before
 sundown.
 Thanks.

The most significant change to next generation Tacoma is the addition of the
"D" cab or double cab truck which is scheduled for Jan 2001. There are a
few minor changes to the interior etc. The seats are being slightly
modified to increase comfort, fabric and color will change also. I haven't
heard of any changes to the engine or drive train.

Jason, is this driveshaft on the front or rear??
If it is on the front it should not have been turning driving down the
 road.
If it is on the rear, is 16" necessary?
I have heard it is very difficult to balance a driveshaft that heavy. I
think the heavier it is the more it will show either out of balance
problems or (i think) u-joint angles not perfect.
 Toyota Tony
It is on the rear and yes, 16 inches is a bit over kill...I just figured
I'd buy it and have them build it strong and never have to build
another one. I think their 16" spline shaft is fine for a rock-crawler/
off-road application but possibly unsuitable for street use. The splines
as Chris G. mentioned on his are a very course pitch and are somewhat
loose. I am not sure if Chris's shaft uses a shortened version of my
splimes or if ours are different. I did get Gloeco to confirm that
the splines are not from an automotive source but from an industrial
application. I bought it knowing I would soon be converting to a NP205
from a NP203 transfer-case which is 7" shorter. The shaft was bought
with the idea being...last driveshaft mod ever...as I should have been
able to run any length trans/transfer together with any rear suspension/
shackle arrangement. The truck currently has 14" rear vertical travel
(far more for articulated travel) and is shock/brakeline/e-cable/exhaust/
and shackle limited--my shackles are horizontal at max travel etc. I am
shooting for 19" true vertical travel and may in the end use a lot more
of Gloeco's shaft travel...if I can eliminate the vibration problem.
The factory stock shaft ran smooth until it broke in half at 90+MPH and
flew out from under the truck so it is not driveshaft u-joint angle
related. Also, how good are Nepco(sp?) u-joints? Gleoco would not
build the shaft with Spicer's, mine were already getting loose after
100 miles probably from the extreme vibration--my transfer case shifter
shakes side to side and buzzes/humms depending on speed--over 2" side
 to side!!!

strut tower system works. And how reliable the kit is. I know about the
rear driveshaft problems and that is an easy fix. I was wondering if there are
any alignment issues with the kit, and how "beefy" it is? Please give me as much
info as you can. And as far as the Procomp lift, everybody out there who has a
Procomp lift tell me that there 33x12.50 rub. No matter what kind of tire that they have.
Also several shops have told me that the spindle spacer has problems breaking when out
4 wheelin'. I want to clear 33's and have no problem without a body lift.

 Subject: Gas Gauge Gone
Over the weekend my gas gauge started acting funny. When I start the truck
it reads fine (3/4 full at the time), then as I drive the needle would begin
to dip slowly until it stays at bottom. When I come to a full stop, it would
slooowly creep back up, but any forward motion and the needle dips back down
 again.
Then on Sunday the needle (or entire gauge) just went completely. Is this a
gas tank sending unit problem ? I hope it's a cheap, DIY job, I just spent
almost Cdn$1000 last week on an unplanned new clutch job, but at least the
truck purrs like a dream in that respect now.
Any help on my gas gauge problem would be highly appreciated !

This is nice if you just want to add an amp to your current stereo, but
if you are looking for high quality sound, aftermarket radios with preamp
outputs produce far better sound than any stock radio system.
Aftermarket introduces less noise, has better stereo separation, and
produces clearer, crisper music reproduction, and have a better sound

No doubt about that one. Most after-market stereo components are
definately much better quality but like I mentioned, if all he wants to
do is hook up an amp, then he doesn't need to change the whole system.
Depends on how much better he wants the sound to be and what budget he's
working with. You can spend very little money to get slightly better
sound or thousands of dollars for a competition system.

I offer this near tragic, embarrassing story up to the lists for your benefit and safety. I was driving my 79 Blazer (4" lift) to my newly purchased first home through the twisty curvy back country roads of Wake Forest NC, when, much to my dismay, my left front 35x14x15" Ground Hawg on it's 15x10" rim decides to exit - stage left!!! That's right, wheel and tire go cruising of into the distance, while my truck and myself went skidding into the ditch on the right side of the road! Thank God there was no one coming in the opposite lane!!
Long story short - I was able to jack up the truck and reinstall the rim & tire, steal one lug nut from the other 3 wheels, and slowly drive home (I was only like 3 miles from the house). Aside from the fire I started on the side of the road from the sparks, and the very flat spot on my rotor, the truck is fine! Can you believe no body damage!!
Anyways, I guess the moral of the story is to always recheck the tightness of your lugnuts on a regular basis, especially if your wheels are aluminum.

OK, since someone else brought it up, I've been running a single kicker

fairly well, and used a dynamat like product to dampen the sheetmetal, and
used 3/4" plywood on the front side to hold the sub. I think I've got
about .8 cu ft. My question is this - I'm looking for a better sound out
of this 'box' and was wondering what others have done - I think the sub is
a little sloppy at high volumes, and definately doesn't have the 'punch'
of the 2 12's that I have in my avalon ;-)
Anyone have any opionions on going with a JL audio 10W3 or soething else?
Do I just need to scrap the idea of using the storage area as a sub box
and loose valuable cargo space just to get more bass?
FWIW I'm using a MTX 2160 (2x160) bridged mono rated at like 1x380 to
drive the sub (can easily bottom it out), and a 4320 (80x4) for the full

one of the reasons to avoid this method is that you are still going
through the amplifier section of the head unit. so if your radio has
sucky sounding output, you're just passing it along to a pre-amp stage.
unfortunately, there aren't too much head units out there with pre-amp

attach an amp to them. so why am i paying for something i won't be using

so you end up buying an aftermerket head unit. it comes with pre-amp

I'm no expert in the audio system department but I do enjoy good quality
music but it does surprise me sometimes how much people will spend on
their audio systems to get good quality crisp sound with little
resistance/ disturbance/ interferance when there is so much noise coming
from not only the wind and mufflers (in some vehicles) and the engine
but especially if you're running mudders, from the road. Kind of defeats
the purpose unless you're going to listen to your system when your truck
is not moving. Just my thoughts...

ATS: (909) 277-227. Talk to Jill and ask her to send you some
literature. She is very friendly, and so is her husband, Scott. They are
located in Corona, California, western Riverside County.
Tell them you got their number from Off-Road.Com!

haven't even replaced a u-joint in that time. You may need to replace
the drive flange on the rear of the transfer case with one from the
front, the bolt pattern is usually only slightly larger on the front

Actually, I have seen this happen alot on the left front tire. Chrysler
used to have reverse threads on the left hand side of the car to help
prevent this. They stopped this since many mechanics just broke studs
because they were tightening instead of loosening.
On my truck, I had this happen twice without losing the wheel. Both times,
it was the left front. I also caught it both times with one lug still
attached. Truck made a funny "whop...whop" side with just one lug nut. :-)
Once was an aluminum and the other was a steel rim. Anyway, always tighten
the lug nuts within 100 miles of having the wheel
off. Especially check that left front side.

Well, first thing - what year/model? I know all the older trucks/4Runners
didn't have the motor mount provisions for the V-6 (cuz it wasn't around
then), but that should be trivial. What you will need is:
 Complete Engine (intake to pan)
 Accessories & brackets
 Radiator
 Wiring Harness & ECU
Belhousing (if separate on trans otherwise matching V-6 tranny/t-case)
Fuel pump (the stock 4 cyl EFI pump might work marginally)
 Exhaust system
 Throttle cable
V-6 compatable tach (if truck is so equipped)
That's off the top of my head - your best bet is to buy a wrecked V-6
truck and swap the 'guts' over to your truck and then sell the rest. I
looked at it before deciding on a SBC swap. (more power per dollar spent)

Loose some cargo area and build a nice box. Also adjust your amp like
this. Turn your radio to the maximum volume that you listen to it.
Turn you amp gain all the way down and them turn it up until the sub
starts distorting. Then turn the gain down slightly. This will give
you clean and crisp sound and bass. If you want a lot of bass get a big
box with 3 10's and run them mono. The box needs to be sealed and it
will sound better. I've got a simular setup in my 4Runner with 460w's
RMS going to the box. It really cranks if I turn it up enough.

OK, since someone else brought it up, I've been running a single
 kicker
competition 10 sub in the RR of my '85 4Runner. I've sealed off
 the area
fairly well, and used a dynamat like product to dampen the
 sheetmetal, and
used 3/4" plywood on the front side to hold the sub. I think
 I've got
about .8 cu ft. My question is this - I'm looking for a better
 sound out
of this 'box' and was wondering what others have done - I think
 the sub is
a little sloppy at high volumes, and definately doesn't have the
 'punch'
of the 2 12's that I have in my avalon ;-)
Anyone have any opionions on going with a JL audio 10W3 or
 soething else?
Do I just need to scrap the idea of using the storage area as a
 sub box
and loose valuable cargo space just to get more bass?
FWIW I'm using a MTX 2160 (2x160) bridged mono rated at like
 1x380 to
drive the sub (can easily bottom it out), and a 4320 (80x4) for
 the full
 range.

Most likely you fergot the three hidden "nuts". The studs are
welded to the front "cross bar" or the winshield area.
#1 - is hiddedn on the upper left hand side - just behind the
instrument cluser. Ya gotta remove the instrument cluser to
 see it.
#2 is hidden "upside down" under the middel of the dash back
near the winshield. Take out the glove box. You will see a
short (6" to 8") section of vent duct that is held in place
with one sheet metal screw. Remove the screw and then remove
vent duct section. Now lie down on the passenger footwell
area and use a 10mm socket on an extension bar. The nut is
usually tight from the factory (its a "k" nut - self locking
with serrations). Feel around up under the edge where the
dash meets the winshield. Be careful as the metal flash might
slice up yer fingert tips. Remove nut.
#3 is hidden behing the right most dash vent. Supposedly you
are to use a small screw driver to depress the tabs that hold
the vent duct in place. Use the vent duct on the drivers side
panel (which must be removed to get this far anyway) so see
how its held in place. I find it easier to "bend" the dash
out by a few inches and slip my hands back there to get the
dash vent out. Then I remove the last nut.
After mucho practice - 12 min to remove the entire dash...

First, GET RID OF THE PLYWOOD! The stuff eats power, vibrates like crazy
internally. You want MDF, 3/4" at least. It's what all the better boxes are
made of (this is NOT particle board, although it looks like it). Sub boxes
need to be RIGID, very solid, and sealed tight. Any portion that is sheet
metal will flex, eating power and sound quality. I had a nice set of BA 6"
speakers in that same area of my '85 4Runner, run by an a/d/s PQ10.2 amp (50
W/speaker). The sides and front of the enclosure were just 1/2" plywood,
while the rear was the actual fender sheetmetal. Crank up the volume, and I
could watch the fenders flex with the bass, even at that small amount of
power. Lesson learned.> Anyone have any opionions on going with a JL audio 10W3 or soething else?> Do I just need to scrap the idea of using the storage area as a sub box> and loose valuable cargo space just to get more bass?
I have a single JL 10W3 in a custom sealed box, that sits right behind my
rear seat firing backwards. Be aware that you must be VERY careful with
volume of boxes when working with sealed enclosures. I carefully designed my
box using the 3D capabilities of AutoCAD to get the volume just right (I
think it was 0.85 ft3), probably still have the drawing here somewhere with
all the dimensions. It fits perfectly, the sound is great, just what I
wanted. Not real boomy and loose. I run it with an a/d/s PS5.2 (bridged @
100W). The entire box is covered in carpeting that matched perfectly with my
gray interior. I have a JPG of it if you want me to email it.
I started with a Kicker 10", found it too loose, required too much power to
 get any punch.
We can take this off the list if you want to pursue it.
