 Subject: Tacoma Pro Comp Lift Follow UP!!!
 I took my 1997 Tacoma V6 out this weekend and tested the off road
 capabilities of the Pro Comp 4" lift and Rancho RS5000 shocks.  I was
 VERY impressed.  I took it through some creek beds and over some pretty
 steep banks.  It just walked over them gracefully without a spin of a
 tire.  The 33X12.50 BFG MTs are just a hair louder on the highway than
 my stock tires were.  Articulation didn't improve much, but I am going
 to add low profile bump stops and will get a couple more inches.  I
 don't take my truck anywhere it would get torn up so it will do great
 for me.  There is only a very slight notice in power loss with the 3.4L
 V6.  Before the lift and 33s were added I could run up to about 105MPH
 in 5th gear before the speed limiter would kick in.  Now, top speed in
 5th gear is about 93MPH.  Not bad considering the meats it's turning.
 Besides, it's not a race car it's a 4x4.
 I will have pics on the web page this afternoon if anyone wants to check
 it out!

 to convert a 22R head to accept fuel injection. Apparently the heads are the
 same. I bought a carb'ed 22R to replace the 22RE that was using oil in my

 existing manifold. So, you shouldn't need the head from the Celica.

 bodyshop person. I was just going with what I was told by more than one
 shop, and my insurance company.
 When I bought my '85 4Runner in 1989, it had just over 100K on it, and the
 paint was shot. The front edge of the hood was rusted out, as were the edges
 of both front fenders. The previous owner had actually mounted a hood
 ornament from an old Lincoln Town Car on the hood, it looked ridiculous. The
 next summer I decided to have it repainted by a reputable restoration shop.
 The owner told me to buy only Toyota parts for the hood and fenders, which I
 did. I bought them, not him, so it wasn't like he was making any $$$ on the
 advice.
 6 years later I was told the same thing, but by a different shop AND my
 insurance company. Since then, a friend of mine that works for a bodyshop
 told me the same thing (he also drives only Toyota trucks).
 2 years ago, the alternator died in my wife's '88 Camry. It was a Saturday
 afternoon, and I was fixing it on the side of the road, so I was at the
 mercy of what was available at the local NAPA store. It's an easy swap, but
 it took 3 alternators to finally get one that fit. I checked later, had I
 bought one from the local Toyota dealer, it would have cost $5 more (on a
 $185 alternator).
 And don't get me started on Sears/Midas/Meineke vs. Toyota exhaust
 systems...
 I've learned my lesson.

 side (passenger side) His truck turns tighter one way then it does the
 other (his steering needs to be centered). Both times they broke he was
 not doing any thing really hard. Could it be that his steering is going
 to far and causing the breakage? ( I will soon learn the in's and out's
 of the Toyota solid axle, I have one laying on the floor of my shop
 waiting to be rebuilt and hung under my 90).

 I have encountered this.  I researched part numbers for my 85 22re.  Since 85, there
 have been 2 changes in the part number.  Its the same unit though.

 Well, I have decided to put the NV4500 behind my 4cyl for now.  After
 removing the carpet to get a better view of clearances it looks like it
 will fit after cutting out the tranny tunnel.
 I will be ordering adapters tomorrow and installing it next weekend,
 hopefully.
 The gear ratio's look good. using the 2nd gear in the nv4500 is a little
 higher than stock first
 stock 3.9 to nv4500 2nd at 3.31
 nv's 3rd gear is between stock 2nd and 3rd that should work good.
 remember I have 5.29 gears.
 The big thing that might not work is overdrive.  stock overdrive is 15%
 nv is 27%.  Hopefully I will be able to use it.  If not that will
 incourage me to get my 4.3 ready as soon as I can.
 Also with the NV and dual cases my low will be 174:1.  Not quite as low
 as a dual case with 4.7 gears in one of them.  Installing the NV saves
 me from buying the gears (it ends up about the same price).
 Broke another motor mount also (left) I think it only lasted a year,
 will have to try the poly ones from NWOR.
 Will have pictures on my page after the NV install.
 complete unit is approx 1" longer than stock.  Should not have to do
 anything with driveshafts yet, I need a new front one anyways with more
 spline travel.
 Thats all for now.

 Well, maybe I just have a shit 4runner but I had a set of Dunlop RV's (31x10.5) on my 92 and they were not very good for me in the snow.  Not only did they seem poor off the road but they floated like crazy on road.. I had a set of 33' BFG AT's on my 81 pickup and althought the floated bad on a snow covered road they seemed to do quite well in fresh, deep snow..
 Maybe it is the differences in the trucks that I am noticing and not the tires but... I just haven't been pleased with the dunlops.   I debating what to get next.

 Today I was crossing a mtn pass in the Cascades that was dirt and then
 covered with a few inches if snow near the top. I started slipping and
 tried to put it in 4x4 and it did nothing!  Its a 93 Runner with ADD and
 a 5 speed.  I recently was rear ended and $7000 later I have it back.
 Could the wreck have caused this?  I looked underneath and saw the drive
 shaft spinning when in 4x4 but the power never gets to my front wheels.
 I almost slid off the mountain.  The interior 4x4 light would not come
 on also. Help!

 I would say off hand that the vacuum hoses to the ADD actuator are
 disconnected. In order for the 4WD light to be illuminated, the ADD
 actuator must be engaged, completing the circuit for the 4WD light. It's
 possible that if there was any work done on the front of the truck that
 these hoses could have become knocked off, or, if the hoses to the ADD
 system under the hood were disturbed during engine service, that would
 be an explanation as well.

 Well we finally got the majority of the 4.5" lift on my 85 4runner,  it
 bounces all over the place without shocks.....who would of thought?  I have
 to take some measurements for the shocks, I'm probably going to go with
 Doestch Tech's.  I've had very good luck eith them in the past.  The
 suspension rides and articulates 100% better than stock....even w/o shocks.
 Still need to get the front end aligned and more than likely I will get the
 Rancho adjustable torque rod.  Just an added note.  Superlift makes all
 their rear springs like an inch shorter than the front....they say this
 levels the truck.  I used Downey's rubicon shackles that are suppose to give
 a 3/4" lift on the rear...if I hadn't my truck would be squatting.  I don't
 think they know what they're talking about with this.  Otherwise, I'm quite

 I'm not really worried about the warranty, I'll take my chances with the
 engine. I assume that I would have trouble getting an engine failure fixed
 under warranty, but not impossible (it is a Toyota product). If you have it
 installed by a dealer then you should have no problem at all getting engine
 work taken care of.
 I have no idea how much it would cost to install it. I assume $300 would be
 a max ($40 an hour). I didn't check because I'm OK around an engine and
 everything I seen indicates this is a do-it-yourself project. I don't
 actually get it delivered until Wednesday so we'll see if I change my mind.
 $4999 sound very excessive. I got mine for $2300 American. Assuming worst
 case all the way around, I think $4000 would be an upper limit.

 started with the high beams turning back off after being on for a few
 minutes.  Then it went to the high beams not working at all.  The
 strange thing was that the high beam indicator would still come on.  I
 have a PIAA harness with relays that runs the juice straight from the
 battery to the lights.  Up until now I have been very pleased with it,
 noticeably more light that way even with stock bulbs (I have the Hellas
 with the 50/100 H4's).  Anyway, I was convinced that the harness was the
 problem and finally had the time to start checking it out.  Spent a hour
 messing with it and could not find the problem.  So I decided to just
 disconnect it and deal with it later.  Guess what?  The high beams still
 did not work.  Turns out that it is the headlight switch in the steering
 column.  Have to tear that apart now.  As a lesson, don't immediately
 blame the aftermarket goodies.

 time! :-) Yes, this is a common problem with Toyota high beam switches.
 Mine has gone bad and I haven't replaced it yet.

 Ok -
 Ya cant look at a single row (post 84?) timing gear because it
 wont work with that. But it helps you visualie the issue.
 If you look at the timing gear, the index hole is centered
 below one of the "notches" in the gear. Thats the "zero"
 position.
 To get say +1 degree - you need to move the hole over by 1
 degree - so that its NOT directly below the bottom of the
 the notch in the gear.
 But you cant do that because then the index hole is no
 longer circular - its oblong - and the cam timing
 will slide around - not good.
 Now on a single row timing bear - the area where the index
 hole is drilled is "egg" shapped. There is enough metal for
 the center hole (where the bolt goes that attaches the
 gear to the cam shaft) and the one index hole.
 However, the double row timing gears are different - the
 center are is circular. The cam bolt hole is centered
 in the circular area, and the index hole is drilled in the
 "rim" area.
 So - here the trick.
 Paint / mark the index hole.
 count three teeth counter clockwise - think of that as
 "advanced". Now drill a new hole below the third notch -
 BUT do not drill the hole exactly below the notch -
 move the hole over by 1 degree to the left.
 Now go back to the original center "zero" hole. Count
 over three teeth clockwise and drill a new hole 1 degree
 off of the bottom of the notch but 1 degree the right...
 Continue around for as many holes as you can fit....
 If ya send me a fax number I can dig up the
 original instruction sheet.
