Yep, seen it. Don't know about your particular situation but in the
cases I've seen, the cause was excessive detonation (ping).

 From: "shaun" Subject: TPS
Tim, I learned ALL about the TPS the hard way very recently. First
of all a lot of the same problems you are running into are the ones I
had as well. The part numbers dont match up because the numbers were
"superceded" by Toyota. Even the inside of the TPS spring loaded
lever looks a little different. With my vehicle, which is an 88 V6
4Runner the original part number was 89452-28030 and the new ( made
in 98 ) TPS I just ordered and installed has a part number of
89452-20050. So if these numbers match for you than you're okay.
I don't think that there would be any reason anyone would change the
actual throttle body on the vehicle and, if they did, I would think
that they would make a direct replacement. As far as I know there
are no other directly installable throttle bodies that are better for
performance so I cant imagine anyone changing the actual type of
throttle body for any reason. It is possible to slightly bore out a
throttle body up to 4mm's larger inner diameter I think. But, this
would not change the throttle body in terms of its part number, just
in terms of its capacity to suck air.
One other thing and then I'll shut up...if you have an auto tranny
like I do, the TPS is really finicky. I mean I tried using a .622mm
feeler guage to adjust the TPS. The manual instructed the use of a
.62mm gauge and I did not have that size so I figured that .002mm
couldn't possibly make a difference. Well, guess what it did; my
shift points were slightly off and uncomfortable and my idle rpm was
off as well. I eventually ordered a feeler guage set that had .62mm
in it as a combination of .55mm and .07mm and when I used the exact
setting, the thing ran wonderfully!!! It blew my mind that it was
that close. I dont know if it would matter that much with a
manual transmission but on the autos it sure does. Also, Ed Wong
gave me a great tip. Change the screws that hold down the sensor
with 5mm hex bolts so that you can get a better grip on them in the
 future. Hope this helps

From: Greg Sue Subject: Off-road lights
Here in British Columbia, the way to tell the 'wheelers from the show
trucks is the show trucks will have a nice, neat, perfectly-aligned row
of lights above the roof line. :)
A lot of the terrain here is overgrown forest, and when 'wheeling you
will take out overhead lights pretty quick. I even have to run shock
springs on my front-fender-mounted antennas, or the low branches will
put a bend in them (I have nice scratches across my hood and up over my
roof). When night-'wheeling along a dense, twisty trail, I find that my
 80/100w H4 headlights do not provide adequate light out to the sides;
they are pointed straight ahead instead of where I need them.
Obviously, driving or pencil-beam lights are useless in my situation.
James Stevenson has suggested I pick up a set of Hella Rally 4000
wide-cornering lights; Hellas because of their quality, durability, and
willingness to publish specifications, and wide-cornering because they
are designed exactly for what I need. Unfortunately, they are quite
expensive up here, so they are a "later" item.
Humourous note: listening to the scanner at work; the local police just
pulled a guy over, and found that he was driving with an expired drivers
 license. It expired in 1990!

 Keith....
I work in the car electronics industry... I have now for over 8 years...
Whatever you do dont buy JUNK from Crutchfield... They are not any more
cost effective than buying it from your local retailer... As for the
Eclipse decks, not all of the models plug right into the Toyota
harness.. You need to get the 5341 "R" or better for that to work
right... However the Eclipse deck is one of the best in the industry as
far as skippage goes in Toyotas.. The NEW Kenwoods have a MASK system in
which the deck hides its self when you turn your ignition off... This is
the coolest feature due to the fact that in your Toy it appears to not
have a radio in it at all... Think about what your buying before you BUY
from Crutchfield...(remember, they are NOT a bargin, your local retailer
will match any price they have and give you BETTER service)

I am just adding my $0.02. All parts are not equal. I have purchased some and they fit no problem. As for being thinner I am not sure of that. As for the rusting of them they don't rust because they are aftermarket. they rust because they are not prepped properly. I am not an aftermarket advocate but done right you will save money in the long run. The primer they put on is just a shipping primer. It is not an OEM 'E' coat primer. If you just paint over that yes it will rust. You should seal it before painting which a reputable bodyshop should do before painting. They should seal all replacement parts OEM or not. When you buy a new part and then paint, it does not have enough film build to offer any type of protection from rock chips,etcc.. Anyway to wrap up. You can use aftermarket parts. They are less expensive and if prepped right will be cheaper. They may or may not need a tweak to fit but if it really sucks then send it back and get another one. Chances are that one will fit. Every junkyard around has at least a couple of them, and it would appear that no one has much interest in them. The junkyard said I can have it all for $50 I will probably just spend the $50 and try it. If it works, YIPPIE! If not...oh well, only $50 If anyone has any input, email me! I am on digest mode here at home! _________________________________________ Please Visit my web page at http://24.229.36.29/ My Work e-mail address is AndyZook@pdqlocks.com ============================================================================ Toyota 4x4 page: http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/toyota ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Nov 1998 23:45:09 -0500 From: Seth Lavinder Subject: Exhaust system Dollar to dollar / performance to performance which should I consider Borla or Flowmaster cat-back systems?? I got a second that, it's a great muffler and it is much smaller than stock. I was able to have the local mullfer build a complete system for $170 (cat back). it's made from 2.5" tubing and is much higher than stock for better clearence. - -- Chris Geiger 93 4Runner http://www.off-road.com/~geiger Off-Road.Com Toyota section editor, Album page editor geiger@off-road.com ============================================================================ Toyota 4x4 page: http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/toyota ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 00:18:08 -0800 From: Jim Brink Subject: Re: tps questions(long and confusing ) Tim Brewers wrote:>> I have a few questions about my tps. Anyway thanks for the help and> ideas, sorry this is so long. Toyota updates parts constantly, either changing due to service/reliablilty problems, or due to parts suppliers and parts costs. It's normal to replace an original part with one that has a different part number. In many cases, an updated part will fit a larger number of applications (like the new US-made oil filters that no one likes, for some strange reason). This makes manufacturing and parts supply/distrobution cheaper and less complicated. - -- Jim Brink, Manhattan Beach, CA toytech@off-road.com Toyota/ASE Certified Technician http://www.off-road.com/~toytech/ ********************************************************************** 1986 Std. I do a lot>of rockcrawling so that is a big consideration. wondering what>configuration the other night hounds out ther used. I mean, floods>(euro beam) up front and pencil beams on top? My suggestion is to first replace the headlamps with Hella Units. This is the first thing I do with all my trucks and oh yeah put in the 90/145W bulbs. I then put on a pair of Hella Ralye 1000 Wide cornering Fog lamps on the bull bar. These give you light below the high beams and have a really wide beam that will wrap around the front of the rig and show you stuff beside the doors. Next step is to add some Hella Worklamps (robber bodied one) I usually go for the Dual beam units but the main thing is to use floodlamps. I place these just behind the Tcase up on the Centre bearing crossmember. This keeps them out of the way and lights all the wheels. Last up and this is where I disagree with a lot of you I put lights up on the roll bar. Most of my trucks have 4-6 Hella Rallye's 2000's in pencil beams. These do not cause light to reflect back off the hood. The idea is to have a pencil beam so that this does not happen and to use multiple lamps to get a wide beam of light. One of my trucks has 4 Predators on the rollbar. IMHO you cant get a better light, although you pay for it. Last up I put 2 Hella Dual beam floodlamps on the roll bar pointing back. These are great for reversing in tight country and for seeing stuff in the bed. As for wiring them up. If I'm up front I tend to have all my lights on, with the exception of the reversing floods. If I have someone in front of me I obviously turn off the top lamps so they can see. The huge amount of light usually puts me up front. The more you turn night into day the easier the wheeling becomes. The trick to place your lamps where you need them as to fill any black spots. If you are doing your lamps in stages I'd say the most important is to replace the headlamps, globes and harness. Then fit reversing floodlamps, wide cornering fogs on the bulbar, underbody lamps and last the top pencil beams. A mate of mine has also added some floods on the axle which turn with the steering. I have been meaning to add these for a few months but just haven't had the time, although it really simple to add the brackets. I replaced the Toyota headlamp harness, as its not much chop. The headlamps are now wired with 4 relays (2 for each headlamp) and a normal negative earth rather than the positive as standard. I also no longer use fuses in the wiring but have installed marine thermal circuit breakers (auto reset). All in all the new headlamp harness adds 20-30% to the brightness of the headlamps. The trick is to use the thickest wire you can with the shortest runs from the Alternator. The more cable the greater the loss in voltage, the same holds true as you get thinner wire. The Wide corning fog lamps use Three more relays. I trigger the lamps to turn on with the parking lamps, they then turn off with the low beam and turn back on with the high beam. The third relay is to enable this function. I get a bit fanatical about my wiring due to the remote places I get to, so every lamp has its own relay and circuit breaker. This makes it easy to diagnose trouble and minimises any failure. The rock lamps (floods on crossmember) are dual beam types so each has 2 relays and is triggered by the low beam and 4wd circuit. There is not a lot of point in running high beam when you are looking at your wheels, so this is why they operate off the low beam position. The lamps off the rollbar are operated off the second battery under the bed, off which there are two. Again each lamp has its own relay and circuit breaker. The top lights are triggered off the high beam circuit. I also have the hooked to the 4wd circuit so they don't operate on the road. This is a legal requirement but I have a bypass switch. The floods pointing back on the rollbar are triggered by the reverse lamps and the 4wd circuits, again I have a bypass for the 4wd circuit. In all I have 4 switches on the dashboard, all are disable switches for each bank of lamps. All of the lamps with the exception of the low beam also pass through a low voltage cut out. Although I have never had the voltage drop Its nice to know that I cant flatten the battery. In all I run 3 batteries, but that's more for other reasons than the lights. I have one for the winch ,HF (2Mhz flying doctor) radio and the Sat phone (Iridium), the second is to the starter only and the third to every thing else. I get into some very remote places and I need to know I have 2way radio communication and starting ability all of the time otherwise you can wind up dead especially when you only have one vehicle. The battery with all the lights , sound systems ect also runs my fridge over night which can put a battery into the position of not starting the car and not being able to call for help. Somewhere around I have the circuit diagrams of the lamp and battery wiring and the low voltage cut outs. If anyone wants them I'll dig them out, drop me a direct e-mail if you want them.
