Here's an offer: I have a complete shop manual from my old '85 4Runner, that
has the same 22RE engine. I'm happy to photocopy the chapter on Engine info
and rebuilding the head, and mail it to you Express Mail, you should have it
by Friday. The other option is to fax it to you, but it's 45 pages total, so
this would probably take 3-4 batches. It's up to you, I don't mind doing
either one, I have a fax machine right on my desk so it's real easy.

My take on AWD/4WD is as follows. Hopefully this will answer most of your
 questions.
The names that come out are put out by the marketing people to try and
distinguish their whiz bang new system as the latest and greatest.
I boil it all down to 3 systems.
 1. Parttime 4wd. Basic system with a transfer case that is manually switched
from 2wd to 4wd. In 4wd the front and rear drive shaft are 'locked together'
thus requiring some slip of the wheels when cornering. (4runner)
 2. AWD. Basically all four wheels drive the vehicle, but there is no
transfer case with low range. (Audi Quattro, newer Subarus)
 3. Fulltime 4wd/Permanent 4wd (or whatever the latest name is). Basically
similar to AWD, except that there is a transfer case with low range. (TLC
80). Different systems work in different ways, some use viscous coupling,
others use other technologies. Newer systems on some vehicles vary (on the
fly) which wheels get power. You can often 'lock' this center diff to make
it a bit like parttime 4wd.
Locking the diffs and/or center diff puts lots of strain on the drive train.
If you drive this way for an extended period of time on a hard surface, you
may blow something (tcase for example).
These are three systems that *I* break everything down into. The last two
are where todays technology is making the largest advancements and changes,
so these systems will probably undergo all sorts of changes. Things can also
get a bit fuzzy when a SUV has no low range, but for all intents and
purposes looks like it should be a '4wd'. I consider them to be AWD.

The front and rear ujoints on my rear driveshaft are shot, and I need to replace them. Can anyone give me some hints and tricks for doing this? I looked for a page someone posted a while back about doing this procedure, but couldn't find it. I'm planning to go with stock unless someone has found some stout aftermarket joints. Please let me know soon cause I have to get it done soon! Thanks!

I have noticed that make truck does the infamous dip and swerve on pavement.
It has done this since I purchased it 8 months ago (with a Stage 2 kit
already on it). I have lived with it until now because I did not know what
it was. I actually at one point thought it was a brake distribution problem
(master cylinder) and had it checked out to no avail.
I admit I do not even know where the torque rod is or what to look for.
Could someone please help with dignosing this problem? Also what is the
estimated cost of the adjustable rancho version.

Well I got some good news today. Since my friend Suzanne, (the girl driving
my truck when it rolled), got a ticket for unsafe speed her insurance is
going to cover it under liability. This is great as neither of us will have
to pay a deductible. In fact, they are even going to cover the stuff inside
that was damaged like my stereo and laptop. The total insurance payment
will be somewhere around $14,000!!! They tried to total it but when I
popped out with the reciepts for all the labor and money put into it (almost
$20,000, including what was done before I bought it) they quickly changed
their minds. I even get a rental car at no cost for the month or so while
it is being repaired. Alas I could not find a toyota so I am stuck in a
Tahoe. Gee V8's are nice...Don't think I'll do too much hardcore stuff in a
 rental though...
I turned my truck into Image Rods/Creative Audio, a shop owned by a friend
of mine here in Bryan, TX, to do the repairs and custom work. I am going to
have them chop the top and get a snap on soft top made. I still need to
work out the details on this, any suggestions? I am going to preserve the
power rear and full doors, but I am going to cut out the side rear window
frames. I will have several roll bars installed and welded to the current
pillars. He is also going to custom fab me front (winch)and rear bumpers. I
am going to gut the interior and durabak the entire floorboard and bed. I
am also going to have him romove all the plastic in the sides of the bed and
recess the sub boxes and create custom toolboxes and fan cooled amp
enclosures. Another thing I want to look into (since it has to be painted
anyway) is coating the exterior of the truck with some type of rubber
bedliner type stuff. I dont want anything lumpy and I would like to stay
close to the stock green color. Any ideas?
Anyway, enough for now. Sorry my posts are so long. I will keep everyone
updated as to how the progress is going. I sure am going to miss wheeling
for the next month but it will be worth the wait (I hope).

$280 for the headers. $310 for the exahust (not including a

No Scotti, unless you have a solid axle in the front then you don't have a
torque rod on your truck. You listed that you have a 1995 4Runner so unless
you swapped in a solid axle in the front then you don't have a torque rod.
You could have sticking calipers though.

Mine are welded on but if I had to do it again, I would get someone to

I was just wondering, does anyone have any measurements on the travel you get
from the Mazda swap? I made some changes to my rear springs, and measured
from the rim lip to the fender I get 18.5" of travel. The shocks are limiting
about 2" of compression, and I am pretty sure they are limiting droop too, by
at least 1". I also need to figure out some way to get the clamps to not
 bind.
I was just wondering how this compares to the Mazda swap. I thought it was
pretty good for the stock length springs.
Here are some pics I threw up on a page that kinda show the difference between
the home made springs & blocks - It loads kinda slow (me not too good with web

replaced the gasket and the input shaft seal. Now here is the
problem. There is some in out play in the shaft. While pressing in
slightly on the shaft and turning, the shaft turns a short distance
and seats. At this point the shaft binds and can't turn. Did I do
something wrong while changing the gasket and seal. All I did was
remove the 8 bolts around the input bearing retainer and slowly pull
the retainer off, replace the paper gasket and input shaft oil seal.
I need to get this put back together soon. I will be working on it
today so please email me direct since I am in digest mode.
 Thanks in advance

OK, I had a downey header on a 22R that was chromed - remember that this
stuff is NOT a 'show' chrome and is simply an industrial chroming - it's
supposed to blue, and discolor in general (after a few runs through mud
you'll know what I mean!) The coating is to provide protection to the
metal underneath for RUST and corrosion - not for showing off.... If
you're wanting a 'show' chroming that will not blue over time you're going
to pay a LOT for it - I think the first step would be to have the
*iinside* jet-hot coated (or the like) to keep in heat, and then have a
show-chrome place plate the heck out of it....

 David,
That's very good travel. Here comes the questions: 1) what does your
"custom spring pack" consist of and 2) did you mount your shocks in a new
 location?
I have a stock '94 with the longest Rancho shocks that will fit in the
stock location. I'm getting 13.5" travel rim-to-fender. The travel is, of
course, completely limited by the shocks. Even at full droop, the springs
maintain a nice geometry (no kinks, bends, etc.), so I know the stock
springs are good for more. I guess I need either a lift so I can put
longer shocks in there, or remount the shocks in a new location.
At 09:59 AM 11/4/98 EST, you wrote:>I was just wondering, does anyone have any measurements on the travel you get>from the Mazda swap? I made some changes to my rear springs, and measured>from the rim lip to the fender I get 18.5" of travel. The shocks are

Whoever it was that was confused about why the front differential is
lowered on many lift kits--this is done to keep the CV joints at the least
angle as possible to prevent breakage. I have found from following along
on the list that generally, those who crank their torsion bars are the ones
 who are having CV problems.
The 4" Procomp lift lifts the truck 4", but this requires lowering the
front differential 4" to maintain close to stock CV angles. Given the same
size tires, the truck with the Procomp lift will sit 4" higher off the
ground than a stock truck, but their front differentials will be the same
 height off the ground.
The questions I had earlier were in regards to cross members designs. I
was curious why people said the Rancho kit "hangs low" when the
differential is lowered 2" while the truck is raised 2", and the Procomp
lowers the diff. 4" while the truck is raised 4".

Well, if the plug, wire and cap/rotor are all in good shape, then I'd
seriously think about running a compression check - maybe you have a
leaking (badly!) valve or a burnt piston that's causing an extremely low
compression - essentially the cylinder isn't keeping up it's end... I've
seen plugs that were marginal that could fire in 'air' but once they got a
mixture loaded around them they wouldn't fire 100% - might be a cheap
place to start after the compression check turns out OK.

From: "Farrales, Deo" Subject: Rancho arms (WAS: back from being broke)
I asked a couple people about this issue (trouble w/ Rancho arms fitting
on later model Toy's). First, on the WCOR website I noticed the axle
kit was listed only for Toy's 91 and older. I asked about it and this
 was my reply:
 ===================
Well the problem is not with the axle kit, it is with the Rancho arm
kit. The ACpump interferes on the passenger side with the Rancho a-arm.
The arm is mounted further inboardfrom the stock location and the pump
on the 92-95 trucks is larger( switched from freon to thenew type of
gas). If your truck does not have the larger AC pump than the Rancho arm
kit andour axle kit will work no problem. Sorry for the confusion. I
will try to correct that on theweb page to clarify where the problem
lies. Thanks for your interest in our company andemail with further
questions. Also the 14" kit was designed to fit the 92-95 trucks to fill
thevoid left by the Rancho kit and also works on 86-91 so we fill most
of the current years ofwheeling trucks.
 NealWCOR
 ========================
Then I turnded around and asked Rancho about the issue and this is what
 they said...
 ========================
Thank you for your interest in Rancho products. The problem we've seen
with the clearance from the larger GM A/C compressors affects the '93
andnewer Toyotas that are made in the U.S.. We have had feedback from
peoplehaving problems so that is why we list the kit through '92, our
parts mayfit on some of these vehicles but we want to insure 100% fit..
 =====================
So, WCOR says they changed the AC pump in 92, but Rancho says that it
was done in '93. I have a '92 (V6), so I'm still trying to figure out
if I have the larger pump. Can anyone help? How can I tell which AC
 pump I have?
 Thanks,
 Deo  ============================================================================
