From: Paul Subject: Re: Performance upgrades
I realize that opinions will vary concerning the degree of improvement
that comes with upgrades such as air intake, throttle body, ignition,
exhaust etc. These opinions will be affected by many factors such as
vehicle condition, other changes made to the vehicle, as well as how in-tune
the person is with their vehicle. It is however a generally excepted fact
that these upgrades will improve vehicle performance, to varying degrees
depending on the design and quality of the product, as well the presence of
any addition modifications necessary to get the benefit(s).
I personally know that Jacobs ignition have improved the way my truck
runs. I don't know if it is any faster, but it does run smoother. I also
know the Downey/K&N air box has improved the throttle response on my truck.
Are they worth the money? I think so.
If headers and performance exhaust are added, the intake needs to be
improved to get the full benefit. If this is an opinion rather than a fact,
I and most people involved with racing have been misled.

Subject: transfer case twin shifter & other shifter ideas
I think someone asked this the other day, about whether or not there is a twin
shifter available for Toy xfer cases. I don't think there is, but I would
like to have one (Then I could have four shifters in there!).
Since the stock shifter actuates two side by side rods, Why not make two
shifters, one for High/nuetral/low (like the Marlin does) and one for the
2wd/4wd. This would allow use of 2 wd low. Now I know you can already have
2wd low if you put it in 4low with the hubs unlocked, but I am thinking here..
 shhhhh...
Since the stock shifter pivots on 2 pins, remove these pins & use ine cross
"shaft" for the pivot. Have 2 levers pivot on this shaft side by side. I
 wonder...
Also, say you want the Marlin double transfer case, but have a bench seat &
don't want to cut it up. So, you set up the shifter similar to above, but on
a rail slider system with 2 knobs. You would have the rail connected to the
top of the xfer case. The part that moves each rod in the case would be about
2" long, then the rail would be fastened to the top of the case. This would
be a slider system (like on the bench seat, but without the lock mechanism).
This would come forward in the tranny tunnel & allow you to come through the
floor right behind the stock xfer case shifter. with twp knobs, side by side.
Move the right one to go from high to neutral, to low. Move the left one to
 go from 2wd to 4wd.
 Any thoughts?????

I did mine - at home no "professionals" it's held up for about 1.5 yr now
with no sign of coming off or other worries.... All I did was CLEAN the
glass thouroughly with a glass cleaner (windex) - got all the grease
and years of partial cleanings off the glass (this is especially
important in the corners where a lot of 'gunk' builds up) then followed
the instructions from the window tint film on applying the film. It took
a ittle longer to work the bubbles out of that area, but not much, and you
can hardly see the origional dots. I think I used GILA??? brand dark
smoke (like 15%) and their "best" grade (I think it went like Good,
 better, best, 'professional')

The powered sunroof in a 2nd Gen. 4Runner is one of the biggest I've

 Subject: 98 TRD observations. questions
Well I just bought a new truck. white 3.4l Xtra , TRD, ABS, and
thankfully no power windows. I got a pretty good end of year deal- the 99s
are coming in. (no changes as far as i can tell). One thing i couldn't get
was the bucket seat w/ center cosole. So I need to find a junk yard seat
or aftermarket. Really need a center console. TRD is also not available
with manual hubs! The TRD suspension is far superior to the non TRD SR5 i
drove and the V6 has effortless power (of course i'm used to an amazingly
underpowered 91 cruiser). I havn't had it really offroad yet as i'm taking
it easy breaking it in which brings me to questions. I gather gentle,
varied, relatively high RPM is best for breakin but why is it recommended
to stay under 55MPH. This is only 2300 RPM in fourth.
The dealer said not to worry about an oil change till 3000miles. I know
this is bunk, but at what miles should the first change be?
According to fourwheeler truck of the year review the TRD came with factory
4.10:1 gears but the Toy literature says it is 3.91:1. So what gears do I
 have?
Will adding manual hubs void any warranty and is there a detailed
description anywhere of how to do this?
Thanks to the list for helping me make the decision..

My biggest complaint about this is that it takes a certain amount of
'control' away from you. I prefer to keep 4WD as an option to which I
 can control . I own a 3rd generation '96 4Runner SR5 and it has Part
Time 4WD and I wouldn't want it any other way. It lets me control under
what conditions I want to engage it. I too have heard that FT 4WD haven
eaten viscous couplers after so many miles while Part Time 4WD trucks
keep on going with no problems.
In terms of parts longetivity - tires, drivetrain and just plain gas
consumption I would prefer to have the ability to control when my front
 wheels are engaged.
I hope Toyota hears these concerns from the people who uses their
 products.
BTW - someone here at my job bought one of those Lexus RX300 (is that
the model number?) . Anyways, it kinda looks like a fancied up RAV4. I
personally don't like that particular SUV, if I can even call it a SUV.

My father just bought a 1999 Tacoma ex-cab 4x4, Looking at his hubs and
his ADD system it should be just as easy to change to manual hubs as it
was on my 1990 4Runner with ADD. The install was a snap see my web
 pagehttp://members.wbs.net/homepages/r/y/a/ryans4runner/
and it will not void your warranty because in the ADD trucks the hubs
are always locked and the CV boots and axles always turn even in 2wd.
Installing these manual hubs will decrease the wear and tear on your new
axles. The only real difference between the trd offroad package and the
standard sr5 is the following. Blistine shocks, rear locking diff. ( a
Plus) and fender flares. I personally thought that it wasn't worth the
money except for the diff. that is really needed for offroading. As
for your gears I'm not sure which ones my dad has in his. And the break
in period is 1000 miles and I know my dad will change his oil after that
1000 miles, then after another 1500 miles then at the regular 3000
miles. This seems to work pretty good for breaking in a truck.

 Hey again,
I just finished reading the trail report. Note that this trail ride
was 2 years ago. There hasn't been hardly any rain down there this
summer, so the streams are now pretty much just rocky streambeds.
Hopefully we'll get some rain as it's really dry down there right now.
Just didn't wanna have another Pine Barrens situation where
everybody's asking where the mud is. I made it through all of second
mountain in a stock 4Runner on 31's (they weren't street tires Bill,
but they did ok :) ). Besides, the guys in the trail report were
mostly driving J**ps, so we should all be fine!
As for the shotgun toting psycho, I've never ran into anybody like
that down there. That could be part of the author's "embellishment"
 that he spoke of.

Actually, I've gotten so that I can do it in only a couple minutes, and
spill very little oil. I loosen the filter, then starting unscrewing
it AS FAST AS I CAN, spinning it with my right hand, and as soon as it
falls off the threads, catch it (opening side up) in that same hand.
...takes a bit of practice though. :-)
Don't mess with those quicky places....here's my current list of stuff

Ok! I won't go to a quick lube place... But geez, what a PITA!!! I
pulled the skid plate, tried going in through the drivers side fender,
cursed a LOT, destroyed the filter trying to get it out... Must have
taken me over an hour just to change the oil!! I'm NEVER complaining
about the 22re in the 4Runner again.
Sorry to hear that it was a quick lube place that cracked your tranny.
When I first heard about it, I could only guess what you had to do to
crack your tranny - decided you must have lauched your truck off of a
pre-fabbed, custom built, stunt man type jump onto a rock that had
strategically been placed in just the right spot... The thing I
couldn't figure out though, is how much math a person would have to do
to calculate how high the ramp had to be and how fast you would need to
go to land "tranny - first"... ;) Just kidding - again, sorry to hear
 how that happened.
Well, next month, I'll go throught that exercise again... Ugh.

 Subject: Need your HELP!!!
 HI all,
Some of you may be aware that the Minnesota 4wheel Drive Association has
been working very, very hard with other groups in this state to open an
OHV park in the Gilbert, Minnesota area. The process has been going on
for quite some time now, and while we are making progress, there are
also many barriers to get through. I'd like to ask the help of everyone
on the list. We are currently undertaking a "letter writing" campaign
of sorts to the DNR of this state letting them know that there are many,
many people who want to see this park open. If we succeed, it will be a
big win for the MN4WDA and all off-road enthusiasts in this state... In
the days of land closures accross the country, it is very encouraging
that there is a possibility that we can potentially start to reverse
this trend. Please, if you are interested at all in Land Closure
issues, please send an email of encouragement and support to:

Try replacing all of the above parts with OEM Toyota. They fit better
and don't usually allow moisture into the distributor as easily as
aftermarket. I have seen realtively new, poor quality aftermarket wires
with cracked insulation cause a no-start on 3VZ-E motors in the past.
Also, make sure the mounting and wiring for the coil is clean and free
from any corrosion, especially at the igniter.

When we did the 4 speed to later 5 speed swap on the '80 truck, we reused
the stock crossmember. We welded on some small pieces of flat bar at each
bolt pair location to essentially widen the bolt pattern a bit. We then flipped
the crossmember 180 degrees (front swapped to back) and marked and redrilled
the holes. We were able to reuse the two rear sets of holes on the frame. For
the other two pairs we used a set of stock (rear I think) u-bolts over the frame
and thru the crossmember. You can thank Marlin for this u-bolt trick. He got the
idea from one of his customers

Or you can do what I did:
 1)	Cut out the center section of the crossmember with a hacksaw
(quick and easy to cut by hand).
 2)	Bolt the center section to the trans mount and the two small
pieces to the frame in the usual spots.
 3)	Center everything nicely, then tack everything together.
 4)	Pull the crossmember back out, complete all welds and install
some gussets. I used 1/4" mild steel for gussets and it has worked fine
 for 6 years now.
Your rear driveshaft will have to be shortened a couple of inches and the
front flange holes drilled out to accept the larger bolts of the later
transfer. The front driveshaft should be lengthened but I haven't
lengthened mine and it's been fine for 6 years.

From: Peter Hanisch Subject: tire recomendations
I'm in the market for some new tires and looking for recommendations..
My truck is a 92 4cyl, all stock except for the 31X10.5 tires on 15X8
wheels.. I'm looking to get new tires for daily driving that will also be
able to handle a lot of use on snow-covered roads this winter.. I'd like to
get a smaller size to help get my speedometer/gear ratios back to normal..
I've heard that the stock 225 width tire is good for what I want, but I no
 longer have my stock-width wheels..
Any recommendations for sizes and/or brands?
 Thanks,

One thing I can add is to make sure that the distributor is DRY before
installing a new cap - if there's condensation inside it, and you add a
good-sealing toyota cap, it will stay inside... as a "quick fix" you can
try blowing the entire thing out with a hairdryer, drying both the cap &
rotor and the base of the distributor, then spraying "wire-dry" or WD-40
in the cap, and on the rotor, and on the base of the dist, then wipe up
any excess & repeat, then seal the cap to the dist with a THIN bead of
clear silicone - should get you by for a while until you can buy
replacements (or out of a trial if that's where she stalls!)
