 mechanical pump for my 283 that I obtained from the NAPA parts guy. It fit
 with no clearance problems whatsoever. Most of the aftermarket mechanical
 pumps will fit as well. A low pressure electric pump is also a viable
 alternative. Oil pan clearance shouldn't be a problem either. An OEM or
 similar pan will fit with no lift at all. With 3" of lift, just about any
 pan will fit as long as it has staight sides and is not a marine pan. I'm
 running a Moroso 8-qt pan with no clearance problems. Pans that bulge out at
 the bottom may cause clearance problems with the front driveshaft.
 The biggest thing that I haven't heard mention of yet is cooling. The
 original radiator will not be enough. When I first installed my V-8, I used
 Advance Adapters V-8 radiator with a 17" flex fan and it worked just fine.
 Depending on the power output of your engine, this may or may not be enough.
 Currently, it is not enough for me and I am looking into mounting a
 full-size GM radiator in the bed.

 anything else?  I also have a lot of interior stuff I am trying to sell
 off, as well as most of the air assembly (mass air flow senslor, air box
 and tubing), an A/C core, power steering pump and reservoir.  I fyou are

 The dealer has em - and they are like $4 each... The same ones fit the drivers
 side door as well as the rear shell area. I used sheet metal screws for the drivers
 side and got some metric screws from Home Depot for the drivers side.

 Yes, you can remove just the half shafts like you described.
 If the T-bars are not adjusted to factory spec
 i.e. you have cranked them up the job is more difficult.  If you
 don't want to lower them back down to stock try jacking up
 the diagonal opposite rear tire to apply more weight to the
 A-arm.  Turn the steering wheel all the way right or left, I can't
 remember which.  Usually I also knock out one of the studs on
 the differential flange using an air hammer.

 I brought my truck into Toyota today for the headgaskets and some other
 work. I called them to see how it was going and they said that my # 3
 cylinder is dead (no compression). The truck was idling pretty rough.  I
 have never had my valves adjusted so i'm thinking maybe they are so out of
 whack
 that they never close completely. This is just a guess on my part. The
 Toyota service rep said it is most likely in the lower half of the engine.
 A different mechanic I spoke to said it is in the upper half.
 So now i'm confused as to tell Toyota if they should look further into the
 motor
 or just do the headgaskets and forget about the other work.
 Maybe I should just get a yard motor.

 Thanks for the advice.  We were looking at doing something similar to
 this.  Had a few doubts as to wether this would be necessary or not.
 Let me know how yours turns out if you decide to go with it.

 Ok, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but maybe you
 guys are missing an easy fix.  When I went in to have my truck worked
 on as I too have idle problems I asked about the same problem, the
 fluctuating idle.  The service guy said that when ever the A/C
 fluid(freon, whatever) level was low that the A/C would start to do
 weird things.  I haven't tried it yet but it does make some sense.  My
 truck is an '88 and has never had the A/C seviced, nor is it used a
 lot.  So maybe my neglecting it has lossed some of its freon and is
 acting funky.  Also someone else mentioned that their truck would not
 cool as effectively, that also might indicate a similar prob.
 As to my idle probs I can't get it to idle correctly at all.  It is
 really pissing me off!  It only missfires at idle.  No problem at any
 other speed, in fact I live in a hilly area and it idled halfway up my
 street with out a miss in 2wd hi!  It is just when sitting at idle,
 especialy after it is warm.  I checked the EGR valve and it functions.
 I have replaced most of the easy to do ignition components(plugs,
 plug wires, coil, rotor , cap).  Looking through Barney Macnamara's
 page o' info(nicely organized too!) someone also metioned an air valve
 that might cause it.  I couldn't find any other reference to an air
 valve at all.  So now I need to do the valves and if I am lucky(yeah,
 right) it will solve the problem.

 all handheld GPSs don't need an external antenna.  but as i found out
 a month or so ago, when i got the GA27 to go with my G12XL, the
 difference was very noticable.  the screen where it shows the
 strength of the satellite signals, without the GA27, most cases it
 was halfway filled and 75% of the bars were on.  with it, all the
 bars were close to full and a few were over the topmost line.
 of course i have mine mounted on top of the vehicle using the mag

 I have an 85 4Runner SR5, 22RE engine going in for a complete engine
 rebuild on Monday. I don't know if you remember, but I'm the one who
 recently had the tranny rebuilt after it blew on the way to Carlsbad
 Caverns! (Still haven't made it there, yet!)
 The engine has 147,000 miles on it and has a bad case of piston-slap
 (yep, it makes this noise ALL the time, not just when cold). We really
 love the truck and plan to keep it for a LONG time, so we're willing to
 have all this work done. Not cheap, I know, but WORTH IT for a Toy!
 Anyway, the "last minute" part is wanting to know if there's anything in
 particular I should have the mechanic check or replace or adjust or
 whatever. The piston will be bored 30 over, new valves/springs, new
 timing belt, gear kits in the diffs, header... anything else I can or
 should have done that won't cost me too much more than we're planning on
 spending? (around $2,000 to $2,500) Also having the A/C fixed
 (restriction somewhere), the cruise control, brakes, alternator,
 radiator redone... I think I'm all set, but this is the first vehicle
 I've ever had an engine rebuilt on, so to me it's a little scary! I just
 don't want to have to keep going back ($$$) to have more things checked,
 adjusted, etc.
 I'd appreciate any input... Thanks!

 it. About the hose, there is a 3-4 inch rubber hose connected below the
 dash pot with a small filter on the end. The filter maybe one way but I
 don't remember. Yes, you need this and it would be an easy find at a
 junkyard.  Hope you get it solved!

 Andy I have a Garmin GPS III and love it! We use it on the dash of my
 Fj40 & Hilux in deep forest's with no problem. It has never lost coverage
 yet. The unit is great and we are very happy with its quality.
 We also bought Street Atlas at the same time (and a data cable). This is
 a great combo for mapping trails.

 I have for sale a 1987 4Runner.  I am the second owner. 90,000 highway
 miles.  Never off-road, still has running boards.  Black on black, still
 shines but has small rust holes around back wheel wells & a couple of
 bubbles on the front wells.  This is still a solid truck.  Runs great.
 Auto & just serviced air, cruise, inclimometer, power steering & brakes.
 The radio is french fried.  The tranny was changed out & inspected by
 Toyota and is rock solid but has an intermittent habit of not down
 shifting.  This just happens occasionally.  You have to press the OD
 button and downshift manually.  Toyota said they would have to tear it
 down to fix it, and it's not worth the expense.  Everything else in this
 truck works.  Every light bulb, buzzer,  & door.  No squeeks or rattles.
 No rust on tail gate.  Courser tires in good shape, 235x75R15.  New
 flow through exhaust.  Brakes flushed and inspected by Toyota.  Oil
 changed every 3-4,ooo mi.  This vehicle has always been a daily driver.
 We have 3 four wheel drive vehicles and I'm short on cash so it has to
 go.  Besides, my daughter is just using it for a makeup bag:0)

 An aux antenna is a good investment; otherwise the only way your receiver
 will pick up satellites is if it's sitting on the dash (the metal roof
 blocks signals).

 I shopped around for quite awhile in April '97. I bought the Garmin 12XL
 over all the other units. I think Garmin is the way to go; the Magellan
 took over 20 minutes to determine its position from cold startup, versus
 about 45 seconds for the 12XL.

 My GPS II+ works fine in my Tacoma without an aux antenna. Its mounted in
 the left side of the instrument cluster with velcro. I have the cig lighter
 power cord for it. I've not had any problems with satellite coverage.

 effectively) also be careful not to bend the pins as they are sprung and
 need to be able to move freely (you may find that one is dirty and has
 stuck in which could be the pre-set control pin??)
 Do you take the panel off often and did this start happening after
 replacing it one time??

 I know this has been thrown out a bunch of times, BUT SAMS club is an
 excellent source for tires as well as FARM & FLEET.  I bought some 31's
 for my 87 yoyo 64,000 miles ago they were general grabber AP  had eithere
 a c or d load rate, but they r kinda loud.  My 92 extended cab has 30x9.5
 BFG Trail TA.  I have almost reached 40,000 miles on those to and they
 never seem to be totated @ any set intervals(AS I DONT WORK IN A GARAGE
 ANY LONGER)  BUT the short of is i gave $82.00 for the 31's and $73.00
 for the 30's  and that was w/ lifetime rotate and balance and road
 hazard.  Also some tire shops will order u blem tires upon request, or u
 might try to order them your self.  sorry for the length.
 BTW mine were not blems for that price!

 If you need a set of real low bumpstops, try getting a pair off the front of a mid to late 80`s Mazda 2 -wheel drive. The rubber part is about an inch thick if I remember right and has about an inch and a half of metric thread. They are also hockey puck shape and are pretty damn tough.

 Does anybody have any information on a 4 cylinder 18R engine with the center
 mounted spark plugs (on top center engine). I'm buying an '81 Toyota
 Shortbed Pickup that has this engine in it. I know the owner who's had it
 for 10 years now, and it's never been a problem for him. This IS NOT a daily
 driver, but rather a trail only rig. I can be converted to a street legal
 truck, but it'll never again be something you want to drive around the
 highways.
 The only problem I know of is that when the engine is cold (and I'm in the
 Dallas, Texas area here, so it's not that cold too often) it tend to leak
 out some fluid from the top. However, it doesn't do this when the metals
 warm up or in the summer. I don't have the truck yet, so I've not been able
 to investigate this seepage.
 I'd appreciate any information or direction on this motor. The wife has
 grown weary of me beating up on the '98 Tacoma. Nothing has been seriously
 damaged so far, but I don't like taking the by-passes :) It's also alot
 cheaper to buy this truck that's basically ready to roll and tweak it, than
 continue to build a 1998 Tacoma.

 I have found the same thing with my 92 4Runner.  Every once and a while the dome lite does not work.  I give it a tap or spin it and it is on again!  Sorry haven't come up with a solution yet.

 I run a Griffin copper/brass four-core Chevy style circle-track radiator,
 a 16" electric fan, and a monster Chevy oil cooler with a 10" electric fan
 on it.
 For most things, the radiator alone is plenty, but lately, it's been getting
 marginal as temps got into the 105+ vicinity a couple of weeks ago, so I
 added the oil cooler.
 BTW, that's on a 302 Ford; a 350 Chevy will likely need much more cooling.
 I'm told that Ford 302's tend to run cooler than most other engines.

 I ordered some 55 watt back-up lights not realizing that my 92 4Runner
 doesn't use a 1156 type bulb.  It uses a bulb that kinda has a flat edge
 bottom instead of the round plug in type.  Does anyone know if there is
 a high power replacement out there in this type of bulb?  I figure I'll
 add on a pair of tractor lights once I get a custom rear bumper, but for
 now I'd like to replace these whimpy 18watt bulbs.

 Too True. I'll tke the diesel any day over the same size petrol. The
 2.8D is perfect for the Hilix off road but like all small engines (22r
 included) lacks some on the highway. But put in the 6.5 Chev and look
 out. Usually, you have to have tried the diesel versions (or swaped one
 in) to know what its all about, then you wont go back to petrol. Then
 again its kinda like talking suspension and tyres.

 head gasket replaced and a new radiator.  After that it was still
 overheating, he changed the radiator cap and it solved the problem.
