 Hey Folks,
I now have my new 1 1/2" rear coil springs from Downey in
hand, and plan to do the replacement this weekend or next.
I'm familiar with what needs to be done, but does anyone
have any pointers that only experience could teach you
 otherwise?
Similar project for me next after that will be to install
new shackles, also from Downey, on my extended cab along
with Energy Suspension bushings on the rear springs. I've
read some tips on sanding to prevent squeaks - is that sand
the metal, the bushings, or both? What type of grease is
 best to lube these things?
Thanks, and I will report on the results. Can hardly wait.

 Question #1
Is it possible to extend your breathers wrong and blow your front axle seals? I run a fitting attached to a cut
length piece of air hose with the K&N filter. Is there a certain amount of pressure that is always needed either
positive or negative. If it is plugged would it blow a seal.(Any other seal blowers out there?) I wouldn't think
that a big air hose could get plugged. I don't rule out just a bum seal though. This leads to question 2
 Question #2
When repacking front bearings and changing seals is it always necessary to buy the felt/seal kit thing that costs
like 170 or so CDN? Diff oil has seeped past the felt. I am presuming that the felt is for preventing dirt and
stuff from getting in. The axle seal prevents diff fluid from reaching the felt. If I replace the front axle seals
then no oil should leak past the felt right? Anyway is there anyway to get the kit if absolutely needed any
cheaper. Has anyone done a rebuild without that kit? I don't feel the need for that much dough if I don't need to
 spend it.
 Thanks

I checked into doing a 3.0L V6 swap on my '87 Xtra Cab. Although the
drivetrain can stand up to the increase in power (from 116 HP to 150
 HP),
I found the cost to be prohibitive. I am selling my truck purchase a
newer truck with the V6. (I hate to sell it because it's in immaculate
condition.) Unless you REALLY want it done, I'd look into just buying
one with the V6 that has the 4 pinion rear end and tougher transmission,
 etc.
For reliability (as well as refinement, etc.) I would definately stick
with a Toyota engine if you're set on doing a swap.

The instructions say you may need a spring compressor, don't bother. Remove the
shocks and detach the sway bar, then send the frame of the truck up as high as
you can get it. The rear end will drop (take the rear wheels off to get even
lower) and the springs will be easy to pull out with just one hand. It can also
be done one side at a time. I hate when the springs fall out on the trail
though, its real embarrassing, "aa... hold on guys I gota put my rear spring
back in, it fell out in that twisty section back there" It's kinda like your

It may be cheaper, but down the road isn't it better to have a Toyota
engine under the hood? Part of the reason I bought a Toyota in the
first place was b/c I wanted a truck that could realistically last me
about 400,000+ miles. A well kept-up Toyota engine will outlast most
domestic engines. It's getting easier to get parts for Toyotas. Just
like when we originally paid more for a Toyota, sometimes you get what
 you pay for.

All gasolines have a certain sulfur content. With heavy load, you will
be able to smell it to some degree in just about anything. One thing to
try is switching gasoline brands. I found when I switched brands it
dropped the "stink" quite a bit.
On bumpers, has anyone had any experience with Reunel? I have only seen
the pictures, but they seem even more stout than the ARB/TJM types. Of
course, they are also a bit pricier as well. Just wondering.

Before buying my TJM bumper I looked at Reunel but found they charge much more
for import truck bumpers than domestic trucks. ProZap also makes a stout bumper.

Engine might last that long but it would be just the engine. I noticed
that almost every truck at the VT ride had severe rust damage on the
body and frames. Toyota bodies/frames may last in other parts of the
country but they get destroyed in the northeast. Most american
manufacturers use galvanized metals and you don't see that kind of
damage on their vehicles less than 10 years old. I was shocked when I
saw 1989 4Runners heavily rusted. I thought Toyota switched the source
of their metal in 1988. Obviously, it did no good. Ed was nice enough to
point out some new spots my truck is rusting (damn him).

Also a question to all of you - after reading Jay's page about all of

While I agree with pretty much your entire post, I thought he was just
looking to swap engines, not trucks, so that was what I posted about.
Rust sucks, but it can be fixed with a little creative welding,
fiberglass or metal fill, some sandpaper and Krylon. I'm about to
learn all about fixing rust damage as I try to make my '72 FJ-40

speaking of rust, I've got serious rust on my 4Runner that I just found about a month ago. The top of my cab is rusting from the
inside out at the rain gutter seams. I found some rust about the size of two dimes and took some sand paper to it. Whoa! After
sanding it there was nothing but air left and a nice hole in my cab! I started looking along the rest of the rail and I can see the
spots coming through. I live in a harsh coastal climate and spend time on the beach every week but I also wash my truck once a week.
In addition my truck has only been here for two years, it grew up in central Texas. I had eventually planned to fix all of the hail
damage and repaint but now I'm just gonna have to let it go unless I can find the entire top of a cab to cut and patch. So anyone
who might be looking for a hard top in about two years let me know. Once I have the money to buy another daily driver I'm going to
ditch the top, yank the carpet, Rhino line everything inside and build a safari canvas top for the rear and make it a trail/beach
 truck only.

I ran into a guy with them front and rear on his 84 p/u around memorial
day. They looked well built, but heavy as hell! He had to increase is
spring rate just to tote around the bumpers. They also were not made
with departure/approach angle in mind. The TJM/ARBs are much slimmer,

Ok, here's the situation. I have a 94 4-runner (stock as far as engine
components and gears), and yesterday I'm driving moderately down the
street and my truck starts to overheat. I wasn't using the A/C and it
was only about 85 degrees outside so why was it overheating? I also
have another problem that could possibly be related to the overheating,
I've noticed that in the last two months, every four weeks my truck
would be a quart low on oil. Could this have anything to do with the
head gasket recall? (I hope that wasn't an idiot question, sorry for my
ignorance) I just heard about the recall a couple of weeks ago and
haven't brought in the truck yet. Thanks for any help!

I have rust on the top of the rear doors on my 93 4Runner, poor design, the water stands in the door seals after a wash or rain. I have
replaced the top of my 4runner allready (a tree fell on it in a parking lot). The top only cost about $300 (instalition was $8 Grand).
You can buy just the top new from the dealer and cut out the section you need and weld it in.

Yes it sounds like bad head gaskets. One of the symptoms is that Th. engine
starts using water, making you low on coolant in no time. Low coolant will cause
overheating. If the head gaskets are real bad you will over heat from the hot
engine gasses excaping into the water, quickly heating up the water. Top off the
oil and water and go directly to your dealer. Expect to pay a little to have the
thermostat and timing belt replaced as long on the engine is open. If the engine
is real bad they will replace the heads and/or rebuild the engine.

I just removed my front bumper last night as I am going down to the welder today
to add some 3/4" blocks to the front bumper support. This will allow me to use
shackles tucked up high and remove the front tow hooks. I keep bending the clips
 back on the hooks.
It's amazing how much higher the front end is without the front TJM on there.

 Just found this one-
Lexus engineers have a way of testing to see if their cars are air-tight.
They would put a cat in the car and close it up. They
would check the car again in 24 hours. If the cat was dead, it passed the
 test.
Chrysler heard about this and decided to try it. They put a cat in one of
their cars and closed it up. When they checked it again
in 24 hours, the cat was gone.

They offer "new" Toyota six-foot beds for 84 to 88. The picture looks
like an actual smooth-side Toyota bed from that era. However, the
listed construction is 12 ga. galvneel steel inner wall construction,
one piece fiberglass outside walls, tailgate with steel interior and
fiberglass exterior. They say that the bed comes complete with all
mounting hardware and primed and undercoated.
It looks like a possible solution to replacing a bed with something
"stock" although I would like to see it in person first. I am a bit
wary of how the fiberglass and wood beds would hold up, this steel
interior would probably be better. Anyone familiar with these folks?

If you are going to run trails thick enough where you have to knock
trees over to turnaround, I'd suggest you invest in a chainsaw, rather
than a heavy bumper. And the saw will even come in handy back at camp
 or in the yard, etc.
The idea though, is to tread lightly! Don't mess up a good thing that
we all enjoy for the time being at least.

 Sorry, Kevin
It was a joke. Trees weren't run over. They may have been tapped with a
bumper. It is amazing how strong trees are. Just look at the cars that
hit trees. The tree is usually fine and the car and its passengers are a
mess. We also never left the trail. But when a trail ends and you can't
go forward, you have to turn around. You could go forward and blaze the
trail further but this isn't ethical. We all did 3-25 point turns :-)
And I do carry a handsaw for those trees that have fallen across a
 trail.

If you're not getting too fancy w/ your cuts (Just angled ends and miters)
then one of them chop saws do go a very long way. You can get 'em for
about $160 at Home Depot for a decent 10" Makita. I like to deburr and
smooth w/ the same abrasive wheel that cuts -- saves having to pull out a
4" grinder or die grinder. Also, be ready to have your gargae smell like
a muffler shop.....that's all they ever use to cut tubing and etc.
Now if I could find an affordable tubing bender w/ more affordable
 dies....any suggestions?

From: Robert Redmon Subject: engine knock, piston slap(?)
 Hi,
 I just purchased a 93 4x4 sr5 v6 xtra-cab automatic as of 2 months ago,
from a dealer with a (12k mile)/1year warranty on the drivetrain. My
truck has 85k miles, and upon testdriving I didn't notice any peculiar
noises or shimmys. Lately, I hear two strange noises:
 (1) Intermittant metalic sounding rattle at 3000 RPM whenever
engine is revved under load and moving more than 25 MPH. The noise isn't
very loud -- I can't hear it when A/C is on. I don't hear this noise
until the engine is warmed up. When revving the engine with tranny in
gear and depressing brake to keep truck stopped, I don't hear this noise.
I also don't hear this noise when coasting on highway in neutral and
 revving engine.
 (2) After having driven 5 miles or more and the temp gauge
indicates that the engine is warmed up I notice a slight thumping noise
whenever taking off from a stop with the slightest acceleration. I can
hear this thumping from about 1000rpm-1300rpm (the pace of the thumping
quickens with rpm). I don't hear this noise before truck is warmed up, so
it is not the combination of engine noises making a beat like when playing
two different sounds with slightly different frequencies. I also don't
hear the thumping while revving engine in neutral.
The mechanic at the dealership where I bought the truck fed me a line
regarding (2). He said (2) didn't seem like a problem "as there is some
slop built in the crankshaft-bearing connection." BTW: The oil gauge
indicates normal oil pressure, gas mileage=@17mpg, and no noise change
 using higher octane gas.
I would appreciate any responses, no matter how far-fetched, regarding
what to do and how to get the dealer to fix it if there is a problem.
 Thanks in advance!
