I think printing them on rolls of duct tape would be great!
I am looking at 3" round, white background with Black lettering. Yes a
window sticker would be nice too, maybe later. It will have the wording
of the bottom logo "Toyota 4x4 Mailing List Member" on top and
"toy4x4@tlca.org" at the bottom. I think the cost will be $1 for two
stickers including shipping. If any one else has a drawing they are
working on for submission please let me know ASAP, otherwise I will go
ahead and have these printed up next week. The first run will be 1,000
stickers. You can see the sticker at

Ok I fixed that, Scott Wilson thought I should get rid of the word
"member" too, what do you guys think? As to ordering I think the best
way would be to send me a check for $1 and I will mail the stickers
back. Any other ideas?

I think it will make the sticker look less cluttered, and also make the

IMO, "member" doesn't need to be there....you wouldn't have the sticker
unless you WERE, right? As for the $1 check, it sounds good (and keeps
people from raiding your mailbox for singles), but would it be easier on
your end to send a SASE?

From: David Fritzsche Subject: Bed Boxes> Do these ammo boxes have any provision for locking them, with a
padlock or a key lock?
The Ammo boxes that I used had two latches. I turned one into a hinge by
cutting off the up right part on the locating lip and welding the latch
in place. On the other end I welded a piece of a heavy chain link on so
the latch would close over it and it stick through the latch and I can
put a lock on it. The chain link was about 2 " long and it is about 1/4"
in diameter. I cut one end off and drilled two holes in the box and
welded it in place. Works great, only one lock on each box. I will have
three boxes in the bed when I am through, two in the back for storage
and one up front that will have my home made on-board air system in it.
The front one I cut and welded at an angle so it would fit between the
front of the bed and the wheel well. In the storage box I made some
wooden trays that slide down into the boxes. I made three trays. I use
one for nuts, bolts , tape what ever I think that I will need. The
other two I use for tools, one for metrics and the other for SAE.

A SASE would be much easier and then I could make it more like 6
stickers for a dollar. I don't want to deposit a bunch of checks for
less than a dollar or I think the bank will be mad at me. If I sold all
the stickers at 6 for a dollar then a could take our list artist, Woody

From: Jonathan Albrecht Subject: Hard pull in 4wd
Last weekend I took a few bad lines and well... got a bit more air than
I wanted. Anyway, here's the problem:
Any time that I have the truck in 4wd, and gas it hard, it pulls real
hard to the left. Actually, what it really does, is the steering wheel
gets real light and turns towards the right as the truck starts to go
left. As long as I keep it at about 90 degrees turned right, the truck
goes strait (under full throttle). If you've ever driven a truck with a
front locker, it's almost exactly the same as running it in 4wd with
just the passenger's side hub locked.
In 2wd, it drives just fine, and is smooth up to 80mph (haven't found a
steep enough hill to try anything faster ;). In 4wd, as long as you
don't gas it hard, it drives just fine too.. though it does feel a bit
twitchier/vauge.
The truck is an IFS with an unmodifed (for now ;) rancho 3" kit, newish
35bfg's and 10" rims.
I checked the basics.. the steering damper's (or dampener, whatever ;)
on tight, and still functional (probably not much effect anyway), and
all the ball joints and tie rod ends seem very tight with no noticable
play in them. I tried pulling (in all directions) on the pitman arm and
idler arm, and they seem to be nice and tight too...well, I can't get
them to move any direction but what they were designed for anyways. I
still need to check my air pressure, but I just aired them up to 30psi
on sunday (I noticed this problem last wednesday) so I doubt that's it..
one tire doesn't look noticbly flat(er) than the others.
One of my buddies had this same problem on his '90 last winter, and I
forget what finally fixed it (though I know it took awhile to figger
out) so I don't think it has anything to do with the rancho kit itself..
but I dunno.
Personally, I think it might be the idler arm. Here's why: When you
gas it (in 4wd), the tires want to toe in (easier than pulling the truck
forwards). The Tie rod is connected between the pitman and idler arms.
with the two small drag links/tie rods running from the main drag link
down to the knuckles. My thought is that the idler arm is
moving/flexing up (or down) and allowing the passenger's side tire to
toe in, causing the truck to go left.. ect. How do I check this out?
Any other suggestions?
thanks,
_______

Scott Muir wrote:

I take it since all has been quiet on it

In California, several cool (for us regular folk) things have happened in
the last 15 months to cripple the onerous threat of OBD-2:
- The citizens (and therefore, their elected officials) got p.o.'d
at CARB's attempt to exert complete control over their vehicles and their
lives. This effectively cancelled the "treadmill" smog test, where the
vehicle would be running with its drive wheels on rollers. Big tires could
have potentially honked this up big-time. The test is still a tailpipe-only
thing. In addition, a 25-year rule was put proposed (not sure if it is yet
effective), where vehicles more than 25 years old were exempted from the
smog laws. The Gross Polluter thing has sort of died as well. In
California, which has no public-transit systems to speak of, if you take
away a person's vehicle, you take away their livelihood. And NO ONE that
holds public office wants to open that can of worms.
- The logistics of the thing kind of crushed all the Big
Brother-style testing CARB was proposing. Proposed state-run-only smog test
stations, died a quick death, when the realization that running 15,000,000
cars a year thru a 60-90 minute procedure added up almost exponentially
(within a week of beginning this program, the state-run Referee Stations
had a three-month backlog). I checked with CARB in the 818, and they said
it would be illegal to tamper with any system that would affect the
emissions. But they also admitted that since their plan has sort of
crumbled under public and legislative pressure, there is no way they could
implement any sort of procedure to check for error codes.
I have yet to meet someone who has bought a Tacoma and run 35" or larger
tires with stock gearing. This is the sort of thing that would have, in
theory, brought on the error codes. It was never a question of the math,
more a question of the load vs. speed issue. Would a severely slipping
clutch have brought the same panic on? I don't know, and would prefer not
to.
In California, as before, you still go to a local gas station and get
hooked up to pretty much the same test machines. The only difference is now
the test results are transmitted electronically to the DMV. All of the
shops do "pre-testing", which means they run the machine without turning on
the modem.
So I guess it's all a moot point at this period in time; a stalemate
between myself and Ken Sandberg. I, for one, am glad that we DIDN'T find
out whether or not I was correct on all this. I would prefer to be
incorrect.
I guess it just goes to show that the power of public opinion CAN have an
effect on government.

Just a quick note about "small" CB's... many of the really small ones
(ie. the very inexpensive ones) have cheap receiver sections... if you
are 'wheeling in a group, the closer trucks may overload the receiver,
and they will sound like crap... although the farther-away trucks will
sound ok. A valuable feature to look for is an "RF Gain" control, which
will let you adjust the sensitivity of your receiver. I mention this as
I ran into this problem last week while 'wheeling.
On another note, the VHF-FM radios that we used yesterday performed well
from "right close by" to over 10 miles away (we got separated, and went
in opposite directions before we figured out that we were on different
roads!). We were exploring a twisty valley (Squamish River Valley, for
those in British Columbia), and well out of CB range. We still had
excellent reception, and could have gone alot further.
About shackles: Some guy in a Rabbit rear-ended my truck 2 days ago...
he was stopped by the spare tire and a Con-Ferr shackle. I didn't even
feel it, just heard it. He had a nice shackle mark in his hood and a
cracked grille... no damage to my truck, except for a bent license
plate, which I straightened out in front of him. I then brushed off his
paint flakes from the shackle, which didn't even get scratched. He said
"Wow, tough truck..." and I replied, "Hey, it's a Toyota!"

I've only seen this in the event of a sensor or component failure. The
OBD system will effectively go into a "limp home" mode, so as to prevent
damage to the engine, usually from detonation. This function isn't
specific to OBD-II however, just incorporated into the vehicle's
programming strategy.
California is indeed going to go to a loaded-mode (chassis dynamometer)
emission test. It just merely is postponed until the first of June. This
testing is required in the enhanced areas like L.A., Orange, and a
handful of Counties in the Northern part of the State. These will be run
by independent shops though. There are "test only" stations around as
well but these too are independently operated. There will be only a few
centralized emission test facilities. These will test a pre-selected
group (I think it is 15% of the representative "fleet" of vehicles on
the road) of cars and light trucks through an appointment process. This
is more or less a control procedure to test the new system.
In the event of a vehicle having large tires on a loaded mode test, the
smog technician would probably refer the owner to a referee station for
testing. Large tires and dynos do not mix. Just ask one of my techs. who
found out the hard way last week :-)

I have the gear to do it but not the time at this point. I have however
done the stuff for the Vlink and will do the Double shackle setup and
double jointed shackle soon. You can get the Vlink on Jack Alford's page
http://www.off-road.com/~jalford/. I will send you some stuff on TT3.
TT3 will I hope be on the road in a few months. I have to do a lot of
testing before rego is attained as a vehicle in its own right and am
going wheeling for 2 months late in the year and want it done for the
trip.

From: "james stevenson" Subject: ideas...>lever-type upper shock mounts
I used the same length arms for both shocks on the first suspension
setup on Tonktuf2. Then moved on to an inboard arrangement with unequal
arms. The lever arrangement allows you to keep the stock shock bracket
and extend the shock lengths longer. You can actually get longer shocks
under the front guards than using extended upper towers. With a 3rd gen
solid rig you can only extend the towers 2 in anyway. By using a lever
setup you can effectively extend the shock tower length by or more 6
inches depending on tire sizes. By using a short arm you will limit the
affect to the extra shock travel, but by upping the rate on the second
shock you can have a soft shock at the ends of the travel and a hard one
in the middle assuming the shocks have equal rate. I initially ran
RS9000's on each the main shock on 2 and the second unit on 5 with equal
arms giving a soft rate in the middle and a hard rate at the extremes.>How about a shackle reversal for the front of Toyota trucks?
A shackle reversal will help the 3rd gen tyre clearances but produce
more bump steer. Forcing the change to crossover steering. Why not just
add a shackle on the other end of the spring and a Vlink to control it.
The diff will now stay in the middle (close enough) and have heaps more
articulation. To do the shackle you can replace the existing fixed eye
mount or make a shackle the replicates the spring eye on one end an a
normal shackle on the other. I went for a double jointed shackle, by
wielding two tubes 3 inch apart. Both of the tubes replicates the spring
eye dimensions. I then used stock sized poly bushes in the tubes. The
unit fits to the stock fixed eye mount on the frame. Then you use a
stock shackle to mount the spring. You will need to add a few tabs to
the shackle adaptor so it won't invert when returning after the
suspension is fully extended.

what the "real" check involves.
Just park the truck, lock the wheel (key off and out) and try to steer
the passenger side tire while watching the arm. It shouldn't move much,
but there's supposed to be a little itty-bitty bit of play. If it's
bent, it'll have to be pretty badly bent before it's visisbly bent, but
mashed internal bushings can lead to play.
And as someone who has bent one and trashed the bushings out of another,
I've never had this kind of problem with my truck as you descibed.
It could also be a bent control arm (did you bottom it really hard?) but
again, I've done that, but never had such an experience (except the one
time I drove home on the front spool with only one hub locked... :) )

The ability of this suspension system has to been seen to be believed.
It is awesome and the front and rear articulation is the same!!. What is
not also mentioned is it is computor controlled and no matter what
position either wheel are in, the system also works by putting the exact
same amount of force on each wheel, so there is absolutely no
wheelspin no matter what condition. The vehicle just crawls out with no
loss of traction on any wheel.
I have seen it demonstrated on numerous occassions and it makes your
jaw drop, believe me. The vehicles cannot get stopped. Those pictures
going over those logs are not just to demonstrate the articulation, they
are actually driving over them!!! stop, takeoff, stop, takeoff with no
wheelspin whatsoever.
I don't know the cost but I can assure you, with this suspension you
could virtually go anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you considered doing it yourself?
Its a piece of cake!
Its a little hard doing the recommended hot adjustment the first time.
But once you've done it, its much easier and faster the next time.
It takes about half an hour, including clean-up.
Just label and disconnect the interfering hoses, remove the valve cover,
rotate the engine to TDC with a wrench on the main pulley, and check the
four valves that are loose. I recommend using the more complete directions
of the repair manual, though.
There was a string a while back about adjusting them cold. I believe it
was .009 and .011 for intake and exhaust. I tried this with success, myself.
Check in the index for sure.

From: Luke P Miller Subject: Tacoma lift
I just ran across a new Tacoma in the parking lot here at school. It had a
three inch body lift, a suspension lift, and 33-inch Muds. I'm guessing
that the suspension kit was a Pro-comp, they're the only ones
manufacturing a kit besides downey, right? Anyway, the front end kit was
fairly involved, all sorts of bracket and such, plus a sort of double
shock set-up, with the stock one inside the coil and what had to be a
shock extending up from the upper ball joint to a bracket in the
fenderwell. Sort of like a Macpherson strut, with out the coil spring like
a regular strut.
What bugged me was the underside of this kit. Maybe the owner was too
cheap to spring for the skidplates, but stuff was exposed. The front diff
had no protection in front of or underneath it on its front half. The
steering rack at the rear of the assembly was also left out in the open.
Seems to me that these two things are ripe for the picking by stray rocks.
There must be skidplates available, but they certainly shouldn't be
optional if the truck is going to be used (I doubt this one will be used).

don't forget to replace the distributor cap if you do the rotor. Check
your fan belts and radiator hoses. Has the coolant ever been changed?
Clean the battery cables and remove the intake hose and clean the

Never heard of precison tune. Are they like a Tune-Up Masters or
discount tune place? If so, save your money and do it yourself. You can
also do the fan belts yourself too. Maybe cost you $30 max for the parts
if you use good quality belts.
Your 4Runner has a belt for cam timing. This belt drives the camshafts
via the crankshaft. It does not control the ignition timing, just the
movement of the camshaft(s) that turn the distributor.
