 with 31 inch mudders i know i need to change gears to about 488 with my

 was thinking about the jacobs system has anyone tried it? if so what do
 you think?

 I just found out that I'm going to be a father!  My wife is two months
 pregnant, and it won't be long before we need a 4 runner instead of my
 pickup.  So I thought that I'd put it up on the list to see if anyone
 might be interested.
 '89 xtracab: Red, SR5, V6, AC, PS, PB, Sun roof, 5 speed
 Engine:
 Balanced and blue printed block, crank, rods, and pistons.  RC
 engineering 4 mm. over throttle body, port matched upper and manifolds
 with balanced injectors.  Dan Paramore built heads ported polished, and
 reshaped chambers with Crower racing cams. Jacob's ign., custom fabed 3"
 intake pipe, and K&N cone filter.  Downey 9 lb. heavy flywheel, and
 Super Clutch.  Downey headers, 2 1/2" exhaust with 2 1/2' cat and 3
 chamber Flow Master. Remote oil filter, oil cooler, and Power steering
 cooler.  Optima deep cycle battery, and a Halmeter (air/fuel ratio
 monitor)
 Suspension:
 Front axle:  completely rebuilt and gusseted '85 front straight axle
 conversion, with Alcan 4 1/2" long travel springs and reversed u-bolts.

 Don't EVER put those chrome rust traps over/around your lock-outs.  they are
 nothing you need.  They may look good at first, but they just plain cause
 problems.

 Forget about the Jacobs doing much of anything to help actual performance.
 Try these things:
 - -better exhaust
 - -header
 These are the easiest ways to get some power.  You can get a header for as
 little as $110, and the exhaust will run you about $150 to $200 at the average
 shop.  Get a better muffler & some larger diameter tubing.
 If this still does not get you enought power to get by, you will need the
 gears.  The gears will help you out later if you go to larger tires (33's?)

 I'm gonna be picking up my new Alcans wed. and will be needing to
 lengthen my driveshaft to compensate for the 1" forward mounting. I had
 an idea I wanted to run by the list. I have a spare shaft to work with
 and was pondering the idea of welding a 1.5" piece of slip yoke to the
 existing slip yoke. I know I still only have 6" of yoke travel to work
 with, do to the 6" splined shaft. If it ends up bottoming out under
 compression it would be easy to cut a little  off the slip yoke, then
 limit droop with a strap. Is this the kind of metal you can weld? I
 would of course have it welded by an actual welder.

But now i'm hooked and trying to learn more and more about trucks.  i'm considering headers and a new exhaust system (mine is rusted out) but this truck has 227K mi on it so will need a rebuild soon.  I look forward to learning more and getting into 4x4s.

 I mentioned that I called and even went by a Toyota dealership.
 They said no-way.
 So that is  when I posted the original E-mail.
 Ken said in a reply  E-mail,
 "Just go to Toyota and tell them that you have the factory aluminum
 wheels and you need the front plastic trim pieces that go around the
 front manual hubs. I have three Toyotas sitting around the house here,
 an '86, an '87, and a '94 with ADD, so I am familiar with what you are
 talking about.   And yes, the wheels are all the same from 1986-1995."
 Right on Ken,
 I went to a different Toyota dealership and they let me look at the center
 cap options, and I was easily able to pick out the caps I was looking for.
 You can most definitely get the black plastic SR-5 center caps for a manual
 hub. I have ordered them and they should be here tomorrow.
 I also needed to order new rear caps, the ones I received are in excellent
 condition but have the new Toyota logo instead of Toyota written out on the
 cap. I believe the 87's had Toyota written out, so I want to stay as
 original as possible.
 Anybody need 4 center caps for auto hub SR-5 wheels?
 Thanks again for all the good info. regarding this issue.
 I guess now it's time to get my fingers bloody polishing these new wheels.

 What brand headers do you suggest?      price?
 What exhaust would be the best, but still quiet.       price?
 What about the Cat Convert?
 Would the Jacob's be a good addition to the headers and exhaust?
 If so do you need all of the Jacob's stuff? (I think they sell a super
 coil, some kind of computer, and something called an Omni pack.)  I am sure
 a new set of Jacob's wires, along with new cap and rotor and plugs would be
 good too.

 I mentioned that I just bought the new Tacoma Limited Ext-Cab TRD.
 Awesome machine!
 But I still have the 87 Ext-Cab Deluxe 4x4 Truck.
 I know it doesn't make any sense, but the 87 is begging me to drive it.
 It is telling me to cater to it. Bring it back to it's glory. Constantly
 saying to me "hey I am better than that fancy new truck." I love driving
 this old truck!!!!!
 The ladies like the new truck, so it is a good purchase.

 stock compression ratio. You would hardly notice any improvement if there's
 any.  If you upgrade from point type or weak stock ignition it might make a

 difference but not on Toyota. I  have energy pack in my Samurai, it also
 did not produce any noticeable improvement. (maybe it is noticeable in high
 performance engine run on the dyno)
 If you want to spend $200-$300 you might better of with the new power
 filter from K&N, it replace the filter box and piping with  a more
 aerodynamic unit.
 The header would definitely help. So is a high flow cat.

 and associated nuts got rusty behind them.

 David ,,,Back in my old hot rod days, we did our own header coating by
 heating the tubes with either a propane torch or if available, a large
 oven. After getting the tubes good and hot, we simplied sprayed the
 headers with either stove paint or just high temp header paint. IF you
 do it this way, also spray as much of the INSIDE of the tubs as you can
 also with high temp black paint. Don't ask me why , but it really helps
 keep the outer paint in better shape  .
 We mostly pained ours black, but have done a few in high temp white
 whith lasting results....

 Just about anything with a better flowing muffler & larger tubing (within
 reason) will help.  A local shop is much cheaper that pre-made kits, and you

 is clogged or otherwise restrictive.  Make sure they SHOW you - otherwise they

 Some others on the list could better explain ignition systems, but I will try
 to give a short one.  Ignition systems are thigs that can only do one thing:
 work best for that engine.  If it is performing below this, you will suffer.
 I think a Jacobs systen is a waste on a stock Toy engine.  I got some Magnecor
 wires ($60) & I love them.  They work great, and even eliminated ignition
 noise bleed through in my stereo (try their web site for some good info on
 ignition stuff www.magnecor.com).
 Good wires, good plugs properly gapped, a good coil, (and working ignitor)
 should do all you need.> along with new cap and rotor and plugs would be>  good too.
 Cap & rotor are other things that are easy & cheap to make sure they work to
 their best.
 After looking around, I say stay away from all of these companies that claim
 rediculous improvements from just adding a set of plug wires.  I had a set of
 SplitFire wires, and they came apart the first time I tried to remove them
 (only on 5 months).

My '89 has a 148K on
 the original clutch (knock on wood here.)  The last 25K has been with
 lockers, 33" tires, running with 5.29 gears.  When my clutch does need
 replacing I'm considering the Downy or an OEM.  Heck with a 148K on an OEM
 why should I mess with anything different?  Also, a guy at work has over
 200K on his clutch which is his daily driver.
 I believe Toyota does not manufacture TRD parts.

 I would disagree with the fact that the 26mm torsions "break-in" and then
 ride smoother than stock, based on my experience.  I ran the larger
 torsions from NWOR for about 2 years and they always gave a stiff ride, no
 matter what setting they were adjusted to.  When I finally swapped the
 stock torsions back in, I couldn't believe how much smoother the ride was.
 Of course I was running either 35" or 38" tires (BFG Muds or Swampers)
 during the 2 years, so my ride was not that great anyway.  I was also
 running ProComp 4" Suspension lift, so that may make my situation a little
 different also.
 Be careful of cranking up the stock torsions for more lift, as it
 frequently strips out the threads on the torsion bar adjusting bolts.  I
 have seen several trucks in this condition (And I have had to replace the
 bad bolts, which is a pain!)

 off....
 My air conditioner does not work (compressor does not engage). Jumped the
 compressor and the clutch is good. Checked the fuse behind the glove box,
 its good. Where are all the other sensors (low-pressure, temperature, etc)
 located? I'd like to check them all before I put liquid gold (R-12) into
 the system. I think its low on freon and that's why its not running.

 how they use them and then make your own decision on what to buy based on the
 info that you have received from end users.
 There were thing about all of them that I liked and I went with the Pro-Comp
 II because it looked stronger to me, But you have to drop the Diff. down-So
 you do not gain any ground clearance. I think if I was to do it over I would
 go with the Rancho/Downey Kit, you do not drop the front Diff. Or maybe spend
 the money on a solid front axle conversion w/ 4" springs and cross-over
 steering and ARB locker.

 The EGR system will always have lots of soot and carbon inside it. EGR
 stands for exhaust gas recirculation, and for smog purposes, basically
 sends exhaust from the exhaust manifold back into the intake manifold.
 These systems are notorious for getting plugged up, etc. Check where the
 EGR plumbing meets the intake manifold: unbolt the flange, and I would not
 be surprised if the passage is partially, if not completely, blocked with
 carbon. Spend some time and clean the whole system. Check the function of
 the EGR valve: a good repair manual tells you how. Basically, you apply
 vacuum to one of the ports in the valve, while the engine is running, and
 see if the engine idles rough or stalls, then you know the valve is
 working. The valves are expensive, $150 and up form Toyota. Don't forget to
 replace any gaskets you need. Also, I hear that Permatex gasket remover
 works great for removing carbon buildup---anyone ever tried it?>Anybody know why my egr plumbing has oily goop inside it?  I pulled it off>expecting to find it full of soot and carbon,  guess I got the bonus plan.

 much easier if you just disconnect the lower radiator hose. I f you do not
 have power steering it might be possible to pull it up.

 I have a complete '85 22R engine for sale. The engine was just pulled from
 my truck. It has little or no compression in the #2 cylinder(bad valve?). I
 just dropped in a used junkyard engine, and I decided I would post the old
 engine for sale on the Toyota Page before returning it to the junkyard for
 the $100 core charge.
 The engine has 175K miles on it. It still ran okay, before I pulled it out,
 but I would suggest using it as a rebuild project. It has the carb, intake
 manifold, complete long block, exhaust manifold, flywheel, clutch, most of
 the smog stuff, no alt or starter. The carb is an '87, but the rest of the
 stuff is '85.
 Or, if you need some random parts from the engine, let me know. I'll pull
 'em off for you, so long as it's not internal engine parts. The EGR valve
 is only a year old!
 Price is $100 for the engine, since that's what the core charge is from the
 junkyard. I am located in the East Bay Area(Pleasanton) of California.

 Hi,
 I am new to this list.  After being without a 4wd rig for umpteen years,
 I went out and purchased a 1987 4Runner to beat around the hills.
 Having owned a Jeep way back when, I am thrilled with where I can go in
 my stock runner.  I did build a pair of disconnects for the sway bars on
 the IFS.  Those give me much better articulation.  And I can pull a
 couple of pins when I need the independent suspension and put them back
 eaqsily for safety on the streets.
 I also cranked up the front torsion bars putting the front end back to
 stock level or a bit higher.  Low profile upper bumpers give just a bit
 more room for the suspension to move.  The addition of Rough Country's
 add-a-leafs in the rear has the vehicle sitting level.
 The rig came with a two tube bumper -- with a hitch connection.
 However, it was installed with a mickey mouse weld job which broke so
 the bumper  fell off when I drug it on some rocks last week.  I tried
 reinforcing it, but didn't get it strong enough and broke the mounts
 again when pulling out some trees.  Does anyone have a strong rear
 bumper that uses a combination of the origonal mounting brackets plus
 brackets that fit into the frame?  I want to get that bumper on so that
 I can use a jack on it when and if necessary.  I also want it strong
 enough for towing or to hook onto to pull the vehicle out of somewhere
 if necessary.
 I'll lurk here for a while.  I would like to hear reports from people
 who have installed limited slip or lockers.  I am looking, but I don't
 want to sacrifice too much, both $$ and handling/noise.  I would like to
 get some places that I can't without more traction. Perhaps I should
 replace the nice highway Michelins with something more appropriate for
 off-road.  When they wear out or end up with a rock through the
 sidewall, I will get something better suited to back-country driving.

 I tried to find extended length rubber lines for cheap, but there just
 weren't any easy options. One guy in a hyrdalic hose shop said he could
 feasibly make them, but they wouldn't be legal, and therefore didn't want
 to do it. Kind of a hint-hint, wink-wink, nudge-nudge deal that I didn't
 feel like going through. I ended up with stainless lines from Superlift,
 from Dick Cepek. The rear line was around thirty dollars, and I can't
 remember how much the package of two front lines was (40 or 70 dollars).
 They weren't the cheapest things on earth, but they did bolt right up, no
 adapters needed, and they firmed up the pedal nicely.

 What a difference putting on a wider rear axle (IFS) on solid axle
 trucks.
 My friend has Alcan springs all the way around and before the rear axle
 swap was able to back up a loading dock around 32 inches (vertical),
 with rear tires hitting frame.  Now with the wider axle he is backing up
 the whole loading dock, 42 inches vertical.
 Running 4" Alcans with longer shackles all the way around with 1" blocks
 in the rear.  He is also running only 10" shocks in the front.  Would
 love to see it with some 13" travel shocks up front.
 He also has a 2" body lift running 36 Swamper Radials.
 I will get some pictures while in Moab over Easter Safari.

 Build your own.  A friend and I built mine with 3", 3/16 wall square tubing.
 3/8" plate brackets with triangulation supports.  Has a 2" receiver tube and
 hi lift mount.  Total cost was about $80.00 which included $56.00 for the
 brackets to be cut.

 This is my announcement concerning my 1987 Toyota 4Runner.  As most
 of you know, I have been spending the last
 several months designing a Ford Mustang Powered Toyota 4Runner.  I've
 completed the swap, and even tho the computer
 is running in "limp home mode" it still runs and runs great.  It has
 LOTS of power, far far more than the 22R (stock 4cyl)
 Motor ever had.  I just got the exhaust done, and have spent most of the
 afternoon giving it small tests (driving to store,
 etc.)  I've invested a lot of money into my truck, and all through the
 swap I was leary about weather or not this would
 come out to be an enjoyable truck.  I have no fears now, as it drives
 very respectfully, and has a good bit of power.  My
 Only concern now of course is BRAKES.  I'm gonna look into the best
 brakes on the market.  "Limp home mode" is a
 mode the Ford computer goes into when all is not right (I don't have
 oxygen sensors in yet, thats tomarrow).  What that
 does is retard the timing, and bumps the mixture real rich, and basicly
 makes the car run like dirt, but it will let you
 "limp" home (hence the name).  Well, I have been told that it runs at
 about 33% power in limp home mode.  If that is
 true, I'm in for a big suprize when it starts running right.  I consider
 it NOW to have the right power range for the truck.
 Its not too over powered, and sounds great.  Talk to ya all later, email

 Do you use the Weber Carburetor (32/36 progressive)?  I have this on my
 truck, and get the same problems during the winter.
 I think this carb has three different idle circuits:  fast, intermediate,
 and normal.  Fast and normal are fine as you describe, but the middle
 circuit (while its warming up) doesn't work.  I had always suspected I had
 a little piece of dirt in the carb, but it hasn't been a big enough problem
 to track down.  Maybe its not dirt, since you are having the exact same
 problem?

 This is a very bad idea,unless it is a male/female type connection.Even
 then i would avoid this like the plague.Bolting two banjo connections
 together is even worse,and it will leak.Any competent hydraulic shop
 will be able to fab you up some longer lines,with higher pressure
 ratings than stock rubber flex hoses.Make sure the hose is rated for
 at least 1500 psi.This is on area wheremore is better.I was quoted $50
 Canadian for all 3,any length(within reason).I have a chum who works at
 such a place,and he's fabbing mine right now,for the price of the
 fittings.Get freinds at such places,it'll save you big money!

 Was gonna suggest a cracked Distributer cab . I'm
 also new to Toy's , but I have gotten bad caps of the parts store shelf
 i.e. someone dropping it, etc. Look for blue/dark trace lines in the
 inside of the cap .......

 Not yet.  The host club (Middle TN Trail Runners) will be pre-running every
 Saturday in May, and I may try to tag along then.  We are headed up to the
 area this Sunday for our club's ride.
 Since I have been riding in the area for the last 4 years, I have a good idea
 of the trails, and I am also guaging this on what it was like at the last
 Rosser event.  The level 3 rides will require mud tires at least 31's (larger
 is better).  A rear locker is also recomended.  There is *some* possibility of
 body damage, though not likely if you just pay attention.
 If you want, I will be there from Friday night on - you can find me and tag
 along with the guys from our group on Saturday.  I will look for you so you
 can sign up for our trail if you want.  As to Sunday, I may try the level 4
 trails.
 Level 5 is for lunatics who EXPECT to break something every day of trail
 riding or it is not a good day.
 I will get some pics of hybrids scanned after the event & send them to any
 people interested in these crazy machines.

 I'm in digest mode so apologies if this has been covered already.  I am
 also looking at lift kits and noticed that Skjacker and Tuff Country's
 E-Z Lift (?) have teflon anti-friction inserts in the leaf springs.
 The teflon inserts seem the way to go if you want to help your leaf
 springs flex.  However, if you were to go with another kit, you could
 always buy some teflon inserts at your local "House of Plastic" and
 install them yourself.

 I'm planning on purchasing a 4Runner from around here, but before I do I was
 wondering what differences there are between the 1984 and 1985 model.  The one
 I'm looking at is an '84,  is there anything particular to that year that i
 should be aware of?

 I would guess it would be a temperature activated part on the carb rather than
 condensation.  I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the AAP
 diaphragm.  Look for a vacuum leak while the engine is cold.

Hi i have a 87 toyota 4-runner and it will not pass california smog test i have tryied everything and it still runs Way rich. the truck runs good I've tryied a new air filter tune up,swaped out the injectors,temp sensors and the timeing is perfect. can the Auxiliry air valve be to blame? please help. there is snow on the ground here and i need to be wheel'n
