 It sounds like a few of you out there have done the 20R head swap onto a
 22R carburated engine. I've been considering this a have a couple questions.
 1. Smog test in California - does this affect the emissions enough to cause
 a problem with smog tests?
 2. High Octane gas - does this swap require the use of 89 or 92 octane gas?
 I'm using 87 octane in my stock 22R with no pinging, and wonder about the
 added $.10-.20 per gallon for the higher compresion.
 3. Cost of the conversion - is it worth putting in oversize valves or other
 upgrades while getting the head setup?
 4. Power - is the whole project going to be worth it when it's over?

 Thanks to those who replied regarding the '80 engine swap.  It sounds
 like the best options for me may be either a 22R with the 20R head or
 a 22RE.
 I have another one for you.  My father-in-law has an 84 diesel Toy
 4x4 that he bought new.  It has been sitting for some time because
 the engine is shot and so is the injector pump.  The injector pump
 alone is $1500 plus.
 Therefore we have talked about doing a 22Rx conversion.  Does anyone
 have any experiece with this?  Are the bell housing, clutch, motor
 mounts, etc interchangeable between the deisel and the 22R??

 Too bad, I'd love to rebuild it as a diesel, but I have a '97 Tacoma on order.
 I hate gas trucks but have no options available in a mini in the USA, only
 trailer towing monsters.  There are others like me who are desperate to get
 small diesels; you should think about trying to find one of them before
 changing such a unique truck.

 WHY OH WHY in the world would you want to do this!??!?! when the axle
 articulates, the toe-in (or out) would change with any axle movement other than
 parallel to the truck... in other words - when one wheel goes up the angle of
 the steering setup would change - changing the distance between the 2 ball
 joints at the ends, thus changing the toe-in....  Try to fles the suspension and
 cause the toe-in measurement to change with a solid axle toy... IMPOSSIBLE!! -
 OK there are a few benefits to the cross-link, but they are only found in IFS
 type trucks...

 To: Toyota4x4  A 22r Shouldn't be yielding such low gas mileage. I would think it would be
 better than my V6 (3vZ-E). My 1989 4x4 X-CAB V6 gets 16-17mpg in the city and
 as high as 20mpg on the highway. My 4runner 4WD V6 gets 14-15mpg city and
 18mpg highway.
 Interestingly enough, on a recent trip I tried to get better gas mileage by
 lowering the tailgate. I actually got slightly worse mileage (or at least not
 any better) than with the tailgate up. This is weird because my old 89' 2WD
 w/ 22r engine showed a signifigant increase in power and mileage with the
 tailgate down. My 2WD was a single cab and my 4WD is an X-CAB. I wonder if
 this somehow makes a difference.
 I did notice a mileage increase on my V6 truck when I filled the
 differentials with Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil. I wouldn't recommend it in the
 tranny because it makes it harder to shift, though.

 list with a 4runner who replaced some sort or donut-shaped plastic piece in
 the shifter and it made it a lot smoother.
 Anyone remember this? Anyone have a possible solution? Any ideas?

 reverse?  (a la Ferris Bueller's dad's car ;-)
 My '90 SR5 Xtracab does.  I've driven as far as 1.5 miles with the
 odometer going backwards.  I considered doing all my driving offroad
 in reverse, but I'd end up with a low-mileage truck that I couldn't
 drive, because I'd be in traction in the hospital!

 Hello listers...
 As you may know I'm now on to my V-8 revision of my toy... I am fishing for
 answers to the question of gearing...  I ran the modified 22R with the stock
 5-speed, a rear locker, 5.29 gears and 35" tires.. I was fairly happy with this
 setup.  I now am installing a v-8 with the TH700-R4 automatic...  My dilema
 (sp?) is wether to opt for a Marlin dual transfer case unit during the build up
 or spend a little more money on headers, an aluminum radiator vs copper, a good
 shifter vs a camaro shifter...
 Basically in speaking to Marlin himself, he shot down my origional idea of going
 for a 4.70 transfer case in addition to the stock transfer case - he said that
 would be way over-geared!  He said I probably would be happy with the single
 transfer case for my current differental gearing unless I do serious wheeling -
 then MABYE I should go for a dual stock 'case setup.  He recommended a 4.56 or
 so gear with the 8 & a dual case unit... He explained it as such - the 700 will
 have a 3.0:1 1st gear, the x-fer is 2.27, the diff is 5.29, and the
 multiplication factor for an automatic is 1.8 - so that's 65:1 crawl ratio -
 lower than my last setup.  with the dual transfer case I'd have 147:1 !  What is
 everyone else running?  I am planning to do Moab for easter again this year, and
 want to do double whammy and pritchett canyon.  Any considerations?  should I
 save my pennies or 'go for it' - I can always do the radiator & headers later,
 but I really want to make 1 decision on the driveshaft length...

 Now that the value of aftermarket ignition systems as performance upgrades
 has been beaten to a bloody stump. I have a question about a simple, cheap
 spare igniter.
 I was out in Death Valley last January, camping at the mine past the
 Racetrack. In the morning, I was heading out to Saline Valley when my
 truck stalled and wouldn't restart. Finding no spark to be the problem,
 and broken wires not the problem, we set off for new parts. Well, the
 igniter turns out to be factory-only, according to local (within 100 miles)
 part shops. The closest dealer is in Las Vegas (200 miles), parts were $300.
 I bought everything coil, magnetic pickup, and igniter, and drove back to
 the truck. 400 mile round trip, rental car, very helpful campers who took
 me the first 100 miles to the parts shop and car rental agency. I replaced
 parts one at a time, but got no spark till I swapped in the new igniter.
 After that experience, I vowed to get a spare igniter to keep with me when
 on such trips. (I now have a spare coil and magnetic pickup, as the old ones
 were OK and go with me.) I still haven't found an answer for a relatively
 cheap igniter to carry with me. It sounds like a lot of these things
 work on a 22R, any suggestions? (I kept the old igniter, and plan to swap
 connectors off the old to the new in case the spare doesn't come with proper
 connectors.)

 Hi folks.  Ok, I have a situation with my truck and I'd like to fix it
 before it happens again!  It's like 15 degrees outside and I go outside
 to move my truck.  I start it up, go to put the parking brake in, no go!
 Won't budge an inch!  I push and I push but it just wont go!  Finally
 after letting the truck warm up for about 10 minutes it went and the
 brake light went off.  Can I fix this?  Anyone?  It seems the simple
 solution would be to grease it, but where?  I don't know where it's
 getting stuck.  Can anyone help me out on this?  Thanks.
