 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
I found a 1984 4Runner SR5 at the junkyard, its loaded and they are
"parting it out". It has a manual sunroof, at least 4" of lift with
RS5000, it has headers in good shape, a webber carb, but does have a bad
transmission / transfer case, which are in the bed.
What Im realy interested in, is the dash. It has full instrumentation
plus a realy cool console mounted on the center part of the dash with an
altimeter and a slope and tilt gauge. I need to make them an offer for
the dash and counsole...how much should I offer and how difficult will
the removal and installation be? Should I trade them my old dash ?
This will be for my 1985 Plane Jane Longbed.
Thanks in advance. If anyone else has interest in this thing, let me
know, Ill get you the number.

 To: Thanks folks,
I have now in addition to removeing the Valve cover, Exaust manifold, and
 the stock Header Pipe, now
The starter has been removed. I removed the starter on the advise of Joe
Lowe and my brother Scott Smith.
They both convinced me that removing the starter would eliminate one more
 variable from the equation.
The equation being, " Loud noise emminating from the engine / transmission
area the last time I drove
the 4Runner. This 4Runner has the 22R EFI engine with "Automatic"
 transmission.
Well anyway the Starter looked fine, and the flywheel also looked fine.
So I guess this means "time to Pull the EFI and the cyl. head ?

 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
Just heard from Toyota that our region- Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona,
Wyoming and Nevada is the only region in the US to order 98 Tacomas with
the TRD offroad pkg. that includes the Bilstein shocks, progressive rate
 front
coil springs, modified camber rear leaf springs, larger front stabilizer bar,
 31x10.50
Goodyear tires on aluminum wheels, locking rear diff., fender flares, tach
 and TRD
graphics. When Toyota first brought to our attention that they were going to
 offer
this option pkg. they were planninig on only 2% of total 4x4 production, we
 thought
90% would be great. First they settled on 50%, but with some coaxing we now
are at 80%of our incoming 4x's. We will actually be getting all SR5's now
 with this pkg.
Before I had said that they were going to drop the SR5 for the new Limited
 but,
we are receiving both SR5's and Limiteds. Right now we seem to be selling
more Limiteds but won't have any Offroad package Tacomas till next week.
Sorry for the long post but it makes me angry when I hear of people on the
 list,
who bought trucks without the options they wanted because there local dealer
said that Toyota doesn't make that option.

Not an A/C guru, just a DSE (Dumb Sh*t Engineer, it's a long story, but I
once worked with a bunch of PhD physicists!) that's been there and done
that. If you unsnap the fabric from the back of the glovebox (no need to
remove it) on the upper left you should find the A/C amplifier. The
amplifier has two functions: 1) comparing compressor and engine rpm and
de-energizing the compressor clutch if they are not the same; and 2) has an
engine rpm setpoint below which the clutch is de-energized. The second
function is what's getting you. There's a small adjustment screw on the
front (all black) to set this. Start the truck, turn the A/C on and adjust
 the amplifier.
BTW, the ASSUMES the VSV which raises the idle speed when you turn the A/C
on is functioning properly. If you switch the A/C on and your idle speed
doesn't increase, then this VSV is bad and needs to be replaced.

I'm no guru, but on the ac evaporator box (big black one) under the dash
there is a small pocket (at least on '85s) that holds the ac amplifier
circuit card. On it is a small potentiometer that you can turn to adjust
the engine rpm where the ac compressor cuts in and out.

The idle speed does increase with A/C, so it's probably just the easy
adjustment you mentioned. Thanks for the quick response.

Got Ed's message first, but upon reading yours I have to wonder...does
turning the pot adjust the engine speed, or the compressor cut off for a
given engine speed? I would assume that it would just set the compressor cut
off, in which case...say I wanted to adjust the cutoff speed at 700 RPM,
would I have to tweak the idle adjust screw down, then adjust the A/C pot? I
need that sucker blowin' full time here in our summer weather, even at a
 stop light.

It might make for a quick trip to the outback, except for the fact that
you'd need another system to get up to Mach 3-4 were you can then let the
 scramjet take over. :-)

Sorry for not being absolutely clear. The pot on the amplifier is the
cutoff setting. The fast idle speed believe is set with the big white knob
on the vacuum fitting coming off the middle of the intake plenum.

You can make the compressor run continuosly, but if it spins too slow (like
what your fixin to do) you are not doing anything as far as cooling goes
just bogging the motor down. you need the RPMs to keep the ref. flowing and
your pressures up. Keep that in mind. It may work, but it may not be
designed to be effective at that slow of a speed.

Actually, I'm not trying to get it to run at 700 RPM, I just don't want it
to kick off when I'm sitting at a light idling at around 900 to 1000 RPM. I
meant that if I set it at 700, then since the truck idles at 900-1000 it
 would never shut off.

We could just strap it to one of the SR-71's mothballed at Beale AFB, or
maybe the SR-71's replacement that doesn't officially exist. I know, I'm way

I got mine at the local auto parts (Discount to be specific) I use a 16 inch fan on the
stock radiator. The 16 is about an 1/4 inch too big so I let the bottom sit on the lower
lip of the radiator making go over the upper lip just a little. It doesn't look bad and
so far has worked fine. It's attached with the plastic pull through the raditor ties so
far no probs there,(USE THE LITTLE FOAM PIECES GO AGAINST THE RADIATOR THAT COME WITH
THE TIES!!!!) although about a year ago I replaced them when I pulled my motor. One
thing really stumped me for a while, that is with the fan on it made lot's of line noise
on my radio. After jerking around with it while I did two things and the noise went
 away.
 1. grounded the fan to the block not the firewall
 2. hooked up the hot wire to the power wire from the regulator at the fuse box, not the
 batt.
I think #2 is what really did it.
I suppose you could get away with a 14 inch fan and if would fit flat and all of course
if you have a V6 I have no idea how big your radiator is.
I really like mine especially since when I shut the motor down and am hanging out a the
local mud hole I can let it run to keep the motor from heat saturation, my reasoning is
every little bit helps prolong the life of the engine.
 Hope this helps
 Sheldon
 83ToY4x4
btw you can also get an aftermarket adjustable thermostat for around 10 bucks so you can
dial in whatever temp you want your fan to come on.

 To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
This is a few quick questions for whoever can help me out. When I make
a hard left corner with my truck I hear a metal against metal noise
sometimes. I'm starting to think it is the steering stop bolt that is
making contact with the truck. Is there a proper way to adjust these
bolts and/or will it hurt my steering if I try to adjust them. Do you
really need the little black caps that go onto these stop bolts cause my
broke off. Also when driving under normal conditions every once in a
while I will receive extreme vibration on the drivers side in the front
that continues until I "jerk" the steering or "shake" it out. Could
this be the constant velocity joint or is it something else. I already
checked out my tie-rods and stuff and everything is pretty tight. Any
help would be appreciated. Also I am planning on painting the truck
after I have somebody do the body work. Is it worth having somebody do
all the body work professionaly with the way the beds rot out? Somebody
told me not to even bother but I have seen some really nice older Toy's
and I want mine to join the group. Any help from anybody would be great
this is my first Toy and I've been dreaming about it up till now!

secure said shock ring in vise jaws just enough to hold it snug (don't smush
it) with the hole facing north/south... (not like east/west like when you
pressed it in.) and get a big socket like a spark plug socket... squirt WD40

To let you know how bad they worked I have had a few frineds ask to buy my old lift
sitting the garage and I won't sell it cus I don't want them to get mad at me.
The kit was really made for a big half ton with something more than a 4 popper.

I've gone through TWO kits! The weak snap is one of only two complaints I
have w/ the Kayline. The hardware (screws and stuff) is not of great
quality, and the screws tend to strip out after several remove/replace
cycles with the top. (my hardtop goes back on every year) I ended up
relacing all of the tapping screws this last time the soft top came off.

 I've got a set of Courser OTD's in 235 75R 15 that I bought for my
Pathfinder during hunting season. My new Taco has 31's, so I don't want to
screw up my odometer reading and speedo. I really hate to give up any of my
warranty mileage due to bad speedo calibration. No anal jokes please!
So anyway, I've got four of them with only 4K miles on them .They are a
really open tread design, a true mud tire. I'll peel them off the wheels
for $200 and deliver them within a two hour drive of the northern Kentucky
general area. The local tire guy wants $99 each for them new. I paid $250
for the set from a friend in the tire business. They look brand new and
even still have some of the blue crap on the letters
They are on a set of new American Racing 15 X 6 white spoke steel wheels
that will fit Toyota. I'll sell tires and wheels together for $300. That's
not as terrific a deal as the tires alone, but I may put a set of 31's on
the wheels unless the tire dealer says the wheels are too narrow for 31's.
Email if you are interested, or even to tell me if I'm asking too much.

When i first bought my 33X12.50's I ran them on the 8" rim I used for my
31X10.50's. It works fine, and actually protects the rim from damage
because of the larger sidewall bulge. Be carefull not to run them with
too little pressure though, They will lose a bead easier than if they
were on a 10" rim. When I used the 8" rim i never went below 15psi.

 I am looking at a 90 truck with a 3" & 3" lift. Is there anything that i
should be aware of reguarding the lift itself. I don't really like the Idea
of using a bodylift and in this one, i guess, when the shifter cable (it is a
5 speed) was legthened it was not done right or something because there is a
good sized hole going through the floor to the ground right at the edge of
the shift boot. I don't think that this is normal and the owner is not the
one who installed the lifts...he said that when he bought it it was not there
then he said something about a screw that is supposed to be there...Is this a
major problem..is it fine the way it is (the only thing is a whole bunch of
noise comes in through it)...or is it a minor repair?
 Thanks

What you are talking about is the hole where the shifter goes through
the body to the trans I assume. When you raise a truck with a body lift
there are some things that people dont think about and this is one of
them. We get them in the shop all the time where they didnt make any
mods to ther shifter itself. you should be able to replace the boot
fairly easily, but at the same time you need to heat up the shifter and
bend it so it does not hit on the body of the truck. Its not hard to
remove at all just get the boot out of the way and you can look at it
for a couple of minutes and figure it out. It is just to hard toexplain
 in on a computer.

Actually centrifugal spun wheels are a bit stronger than standard cast
wheels. I've never seen a one-piece forged wheel, only two and three
piece forged ones. I don't see how you could forge a wheel in one
piece due to the shape.......am I missing something?
I know my three-piece Enkeis were forged.....I've pounded a few rim
 dents out of them.
