Nissan Returns to the BattlesA Titan of a Truck!

Rick Siemen
Nissan at Off-Road.com
Every where you look, you see a bunch of Toyotas, Rangers, Hummers and GM products on the starting line at the SCORE races. Especially in the Stock Mini and Stock Full-sized classes. We haven’t seen a Nissan presence since the days of Roger Mears.
Body is stock sheet metal.
What’s this? We have a Nissan once again, and it appears to be serious effort, indeed.

A lot of attention has been paid to the stock full-sized class, because these trucks are the closest thing to what you can buy that is available on the market. So Bob Graham and Jeff Vance took eight weeks to build this truck (they started with a Nissan Titan) and spent $20,000 to make it into a genuine racer. Of course, this doesn’t include all the free stuff: shocks from Donahoe Racing (2 per wheel 1, bypass and 1 non-bypass), springs from Deaver Springs, fuel cell from Jazz fuel cells, seats from PRP, the truck came from Nissan of North America, 6 Hella HDs from Hella, tires from BFG, 10 additional rims from Nissan, headers from Nisimo Racing, Nissan of Garden Grove for entry fee support and tech support, and Econo tires took care of the wheel needs
Front end is protected by aluminum skid plate and hefty front bumper.
Baja shop did most of the cage and Eddie Frias, Sonny Garcia and Bob Graham finished the truck. All other fab work was done by Eddie, Sonny and the crew. Not much has been done to the drive train. The engine is a 5.6 litre V8, stock 315 horsepower, 380 ft lb torque on pump gas. The transmission is a stock 5 speed automatic with a remote cooler to keep the temperature down. The air filter system is an eight-inch K & N cone filter with wrap, routed into the cab to keep the air as fresh as possible. Steering is stock rack and pinion and tie rods. That front differential is a Dana 44 (stock) with 3.25 gears. At the rear, a Dana 44 tracklock locker with stock gears 3.25 is run. Those axles are Currie 31 spline forged items.

Rear view shows coolers and spare tire carrier.
Other goodies include modern electronics with GPS guidance system, PCI Roadmaster radio and a 3-way intercom built into the helmets. Wrapping up the personal items is a set of Parker Pumpers. Rims are stock 17 inch alloys from Nissan, shod with BFG Baja TAs 35 x 12.5 x 17. Hooking up to the custom headers is Flowmaster exhaust. That stout cage is 1 ¾ inch chrom-moly that’s been mig-welded. Cooling is accomplished by a stock radiator, with a Fluidine trans & oil cooler with fans.
On the trailer, headed for the Baja 1000.
The fuel system is stock fuel injection with a custom 35 gallon fuel cell carrying the gas. Lighting is accomplished via Hella 4000 HID lights, two in front and four on the top light bar. Up front, the suspension is a Donahoe Racing 2.5 inch coilover and a 2.5 inch bypass shock front, that adds up to a solid 10 inches of front wheel travel. At the rear suspension, Deaver custom springs work with Donahoe Racing 2.5 inch bypass shocks rear yielding 15 inches of travel. Body is all stock sheet metal, but the under carriage features custom skid plates using 6061 T6 aluminum for both the transmission and engine.
The Titan proved to be very popular at the Baja 1000.
A little history: Bob raced with Brady Helm from 94 to 98 in Class 7s and won the 1997 points and the Toyota milestone. They didn’t race in 1999 and 2000, but he partnered up with Mike Horner and won the 2002 and 2003 Baja 1000. Brady Helm helped drive at the Baja 1000, where the Nissan Titan took a second in class the first time out. Not too shabby for a new effort in a crowded class. Keep an eye out for Nissan all this season, but look for the Titan to sport a new shiny red paint job.
The control panel: GPS and radio are right up front.
On the way to the starting line.

Night pits at the 1000.
The third seat in the Nissan.

The Titan coming by ORC Staff at Mile Marker 660.
