Last month, Off-Road.com ran an article
detailing how the Search Engine giant "Lycos", had entered into a deal
with the radical environmental web haven "Envirolink". The article
focused on the fact that Lycos was promoting a brand of content that had little
to do with environmentalism, and was littered with the propaganda of Hate
Groups.
"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with Hate
Groups, and the spreading of Propaganda. Doing so does nothing to help the
environment"
Clearly the evidence is there. Envirolink is
filled with comments like.....
"Save the planet, kill
yourself"
"A rat is a pig is a boy is a
dog"
"Man is a cancer on the face of the
earth"
"If animal testing resulted in a
cure for AIDS, we'd be against it"
"In a war you have to take up
arms and people will get killed, and I can support that kind of action by
petrol bombing and bombs under cars, and probably at a later stage, the
shooting of vivisectors on their doorsteps. It's a war, and there's no other
way you can stop vivisectors."
Shortly thereafter, Lycos made the decision
to disassociate itself from further business dealings with Envirolink, a move
for which we respect, and loudly applaud them. This however, was not the end of
the story. Far from it.
"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with
firebombs, blowing up cars, shooting people on their doorsteps, suicide, or man
as a cancer on the face of the earth.
Almost immediately a cry went up from terrorist groups
like the ALF and it's supporters, claiming that Off-Road.com and Lycos were
engaged in acts of censorship. "A letter titled
"Envirolink Action Alert"
originating from the "No Compromise" mail list, hosted at www.waste.org"
was circulated throughout the Animal Rights community stating such, and calling
for donations to fund a libel lawsuit against Off-Road.com.
"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with suing
a journalist or his organization over factual content. Doing so does nothing to
help the environment"
Ironic in the extreme is the fact that Envirolink
president Josh Knauer was quoted on an AOL chat as saying.....
"Whether or not their info is true,
false, or written by felons, this is the United States of America, and the last
time I checked, EVERYONE here has the right to express their opinions."
Further, to quote the Pittsburgh Post Gazette,
"Knauer
says he does not agree with
much of what is expressed on sites that Envirolink hosts. "We don't really
have an opinion on any environmental issues."
In this journalists opinion, such comments make one wonder
what Knauer really represents with the Envirolink site. Is he an environmental
activist or a capitalist? Without "really having an opinion on any
environmental issue", it would appear that Knauer is in it for the money
alone, and that perhaps the residents of Envirolink, much like Lycos before
them, have little idea what it is that they are supporting!
It is also ironic that a group of terrorist supporters
would run directly to the legal system they abhor and ignore when they perceive
it to be to their benefit.
"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with
deception, manipulating the media, legal or financial system to achieve your
ends. it has nothing to do with the spreading of clearly inaccurate information.
Doing so does nothing to help the environment"
Thanks to the wonders of the internet, word quickly spread
about the series of events leading to the termination of the Lycos / Envirolink
alliance. Websites sprang up, and newsgroups like "talk.environment"
and "alt.org.earth-first" lit up with anti-Off-Road.com and Lycos
messages. Little in their content was based in fact, but rather on hatred,
emotionalism, and the attempt to further the radical hate groups' propaganda.
Below, we'd like to present you with a sample of the
extremism that appeared across usenet. To view the actual messages themselves,
we invite you to go to http://www.dejanews.com,and
do a search on the phrase "off-road.com".
"It will be tough to save the planet
without such tools as civil disobedience."
"Of course they won't admit that some off
road freaks had so much influence on them."
Like, we're going to pay attention to an adult
who goes smashing through the woods with his metal toys like a 10 year
old?"
"As far as doing good with the environment,
I'm a professional forester who has very fussy methods well in tune
with the likes of those dangerous radicals, Audubon Society, the
Sierra Club and yes, Earth First."
"Really! And Just what is the FBI's
interest in the Environmental movement. And just who did you
investigate and why. And where you investigating a crime = or
committing one as the FBI did in the Peace Movement to get results =
Yep folks time for you to demand your files under the freedom of
information act now! And if this clown is with the FBI = Investigate
him and his assignments = If not investigate Perjury on his part. It
is a crime to profess to be a law official if ya ain't!!!
And just what were these enviros squirming
about? Somebody good get this guys site and name!"
(Editors Note: When Donald
realized he had made a grievous error in judgement by posting his
rant, and subsequently being called on it by a variety of people, he
further showed the rational professionalism that many of today's
radical extremists are noted for)
"Norm is a current off road participant.
You don't feel infiltrated by bircher kooks?"
"I'm not against doing it in designated and
VERY restricted areas. When I was able to afford a 4wd I'd go to
Oceano at every opportunity. I suggest that you all be monitored
because you are attacking the entire green mvt. That's politics."
"Fess up
to your belief in bizarre conspiracy theories."
"Off road.com is a front for the Sahara
Club. Their main ideologues are Bircher kooks, Norm Lenhart and Pat
Chicas. They subscribe to the standard int'l communist conspiracy
theories and a certain concept called "Conspiracy Control"
Ask them to deny it and they go through semantic acrobats that would
make Bill Clinton look like a tongueless babbler, all to avoid hiding
their kooky ideology.
I know how to bugger them up good. Get them
where they breath. Most of them do their habitat destruction in the
California desert. Especially the area around El Mirage dry lake bed
in the Mojave, and The Glamis dunes in Imperial county.
(Editors Note: These areas are
designated OHV areas in southern California. They are approved for
motorized usage.)
Call and get the cell phone of the local BLM
rangers. Whenever you see an off road violation, snitch their turtle
flattening, Joshua tree smashing asses to smithereens. Sooner or later
you'll get them or their sympathizers. All you need is a videocam and
a cell phone.
Make yourself know know as main off-road dime
dropper in charge. Have cameras and phone ready when these violence
freaks inevitably attack you.
Go to their events at Glamis. Set up your own
table. Video the inevitable vandalism directed against you. Monitor
desert wilderness areas and proposed wilderness areas. They are
constantly violating them or hacking roads through proposed areas to
make them ineligible as wilderness.
(Editors Note: It is common for
environmental radicals to attempt to "Incite a Riot", and
then portray themselves as "victims" in the ensuing
conflict.)
I know a group that does quiet, behind the
scenes work to protect the desert. They do monitoring of the newly
protected desert areas and report the many off-road violations they
see evidence of. But we need more people out there to catch them in
the act AND to establish themselves as desert backpackers and campers.
Then there is a power base that can lobby congress and support court
action against off-road expansion, as well as mining and grazing in
the desert.
All you enviro-freaks quite worrying about what
Lycos did. Get even.
(Editors Note: Note the hateful
intent advocated)
If you can establish your green credentials with
me I'll tell you more about the group that off road.com should fear
the most. They probably know about them already, but I won't say their
name here to avoid any added retaliation.
BUT PLEASE NOTE:
This group is NOT a monkeywrenching or civil
disobedient group. And they are NOT anti-hunting. So if you're an
intransigent AR type or a bircher spy, don't bother.
They will help us get even with off-road .com
and the Sahara Club in a slow but SURE way. Be patient my friends. By
tying these jokers up fighting for their "right" to destroy
their "desert backyard", we distract them from harassing the
rest of the green mvt.
......guys like Normie need to be watched
wherever you are.

"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with
hurling accusations or illegally stalking American citizens while they
participate in an approved activity in open, designated land. Doing so does
nothing to help the environment"
It's pretty obvious that these people are advocating
something far beyond the accusations of censorship leveled at Off-Road.com. It's
also obvious that they do not deal well with being exposed for the radical and
terrorist supporters that they are.
In their campaign against Off-Road.Com, these hate groups
posted the home contact information of our President and CEO, Pat Chicas in an
attempt to have he and his family harassed by phone, and in person. My personal
contact information eluded them, so they were left with only my e-mail address.
Is it some bizarre coincidence that since the publishing of said information,
there have been multiple attempts to add myself, Managing Editor Andi Vogt, and
in fact, every member of our staff to various mailing lists? Further, Ms. Vogt
has been the recipient of several "hang up" phone calls since the
story broke. Coincidence? I think not.
Considering the history and actions of these radical, nay
"Terrorist" groups, there is cause for concern. With groups like
"No Compromise", "Animal Liberation Front", Earth First! ,
and the "Earth Liberation Front" who advocate and carry out extreme
acts of violence against off-roaders, hunters, trappers, fisherman and others,
one can only wonder who the next victim of these terrorists will be.
The words, actions and intent of these so called
"environmentalists" are nothing but acts of hate and should be treated
accordingly. Picture yourself as a target of these hate groups, simply because
you choose to recreate legally in the great outdoors. Picture your wives,
husbands, and yes, your children, being "monitored"
by self proclaimed "environmental vigilante" groups that publicly
support bombing cars, shooting people, and the destruction of companies that do
not follow their twisted world view.
The Unabomber was such a person. A known supporter of
Earth First! and follower of the principals of "Deep Ecology", Ted
Kaczynski used force and violence to achieve what he could not by legal, moral,
and socially acceptable means. Many innocent people, including timber industry
executive Gil Murray paid for Kaczynski's "monitori.ng and environmental
protection" with their lives
"Real
"Environmentalism" deals with helping the environment, not with
illegally stalking, harassing, threatening, and terrorizing American citizens
and their families while in their own homes. Murdering and maiming people who
choose not to subscribe to a brand of "environmentalism" based in
emotion rather than science does nothing to help the environment"
There has been another outcome to the events surrounding
the Lycos / Envirolink split. An outcome that's been long in coming, and long
overdue. For perhaps the first time since the Barstow to Vegas controversy in
the early 90's, major media outlets picked up the story and ran with it.
Articles appeared on the Internet sited CNET's News.com, and HotWired, and were
in turn sent out over the wire by Reuters News service. Publications like the LA
times and others across the country ran several versions of the story, and in
most cases, portrayed the facts very accurately. ABC and Fox news covered the
story as well, bringing the reality of the situation to the masses.
"It's time to stop giving in to green
advocacy group demands," says BlueRibbon spokesman Collins. "It's time
to realize that these selfish extremists will not consider anything but their
own 'anti human use' agenda. They won't be willing to compromise until the media
and our political representatives stop calling them environmentalists and stop
catering to their selfish demands. They are not environmentalists! They are
nothing more than "Hate
Groups!!!"
Even more impressive was the response from Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Average America, who stood up, took notice, and blasted these so called
"environmentalists" across the internet. From newsgroups to websites,
fed up citizens voiced their outrage over what the "radically inspired,
modern environmental movement" has come to represent"
On the subject of censorship, the rebuttals were many...
> Off-road.com and Lycos Support Internet
Censorship
No! Lycos drops support for radical animal
rights and environmental HATE GROUPS!
Slanderous?
Off-Road.com posted links to the vile crap
hosted at and supported by Envirolink. Now, just how can that be
slanderous?
What a joke! What hypocrisy! What arrogance! How
typical!
Off-road.com is an on-line magazine, i.e
"Publication". The author of the article is a
"Journalist".
When you can't handle the truth about your vile,
hate groups you call censorship, when in fact, you are calling for
censorship of the press.
> Help Fight Internet Censorship Support
Envirolink Today:
Shouldn't that read..
*We really screwed up.
*We got caught supporting a bunch of hate
groups.
*We lost our big bucks deal with Lycos
because we didn't tell them that we support and house radical hate
groups.
*Now we want to shoot the messenger, off-road.com.
*And, we're really pissed at Lycos because we
screwed up and got caught.
*So we'll be arrogant, hypocritical jerks and
call them "Internet Censors".
*Because we are really HATEFUL PEOPLE, we'll
post their telephone numbers and addresses on the Internet.
> @ Write a letter to Lycos asking them to
reconsider their support for
>Envirolink and ask them to not support
Internet censorship. Mr. Bob >Davis, President Lycos, Inc.
Hey Bob! You did the right thing..There is no room in our society for radical
animal rights and environmental HATE GROUPS.
"Friends of" Off Road.com Mr. Bob Davis, President Lycos, Inc. Dear Mr. Davis,
I was elated to hear of your recent decision to
stop sponsoring Envirolink. I am a frequent Internet user and
Envirolink has always been a good resource for biased information on
environmental and animal protection issues.
The site is rude, unprofessional, and loaded
with "loaded" information. It's exactly the sort of site I'd
think a company like Lycos would be proud to stay away from.
I understand that your decision to withdraw your
sponsorship was based on an article in a very professional online
magazine, off-road.com, which has a circulation of 300,000--much
larger than the hits Envirolink gets per day (Most hits must be folks
with an acute morbid sense of humor).
Envirolink has a harmful agenda to push.
According to Off-Road.com magazine,
"Almost every environmental organization
has declared war on our activities....It is absolutely imperative that
we tighten our ranks and act as one to gain the power and influence we
will need to preserve our sport and related activities."
There is a reason all major environmental
organizations are opposed to recreational off-roading; they want to
eliminate any form of recreation on public lands. Do you really want
to align yourself with groups that distort the issues on the
environment rather than those that use and appreciate the environment?
Perhaps you don't agree with the opinions of
every single organization that Envirolink hosts. I sure don't, that is
for sure I know. Please do not reconsider renewing your sponsorship of
Envirolink. Such a move would eliminate my respect for you. I will
certainly use Lycos over other search engines in the future.
Ya gotta love it. Withdrawing corporate
sponsorship (money), and scathing disagreements, are now equated with
censorship! There is nothing about non-censorship that says anyone has
to either fund or agree with a given argument, idea, or commentary.
Get over it.
Sorry, pal...I'm about as far from a tree-hugger
as you can get, and I completely disagree. By your logic, if I don't
support NEA funding of distasteful art, I'm pro-censorship. It doesn't
wash. Censorship is, by definition, prior restraint. What you describe
ain't it.
So, let me get what you're saying. To not be a
corporate sponsor of something is censorship??? You're still saying
anything you want. Envirolink is still saying what they want, and
Lycos is saying or not saying what they want. Where do you find the
censorship in all this??
"Finally,
lets not leave this whole affair without commenting on the wholesale
hypocrisy of Envirolink and No Compromise on this affair.
First there's the threat of a libel lawsuit
against Off-Road.Com raised in the "No Compromise" email.
This is highly ironic given that one of the issues environmentalist
and animal rights activists have expressed support for is the
so-called McLibel case in the United Kingdom. McDonald's sued two
activists, Helen Steel and Dave Morris, for libel for distributing a
fact sheet titled "What's Wrong With McDonald's?" The fact
sheet accused McDonald's of a variety of wrongdoing. After a
three-year trial -- the longest of any British trial in history -- the
two were convicted and fined $90,000. The animal rights community
criticized this abuse of the law.
So what do they do when somebody criticizes
their sacred cows? Turn around and suggest a libel suit against those
who exercise their rights to free expression, proving themselves no
better than the "evil corporations" they hate so much (the
Off-Road.Com article, by the way, doesn't even come close to meeting
the U.S. legal definition of libel - such a lawsuit would almost
certainly be thrown out as frivolous.)
Second, Envirolink director Knauer's plea
for corporate sponsors is highly amusing in a pathetic sort of way.
Both the sites Envirolink hosts as well as the content it features
directly from its home page regularly denounce "corporate
domination" and often any sort of market capitalism as
representative of an unjust social order. So what does Envirolink do
to support itself? It runs to these very same corporations its web
sites denounce for whatever funding it can get. Apparently there is no
need for these people to believe they have to be consistent in their
views and actions."
It became obvious to us that the article hit home with a
lot of people, when the letters of support came pouring in. Excerpted below are
some of the comments we received. We have not included the addresses of the
senders so as to protect their privacy.
"Thanks for writing the article to Lycos, bringing their
attention to Envirolink and all the "links" it supported.
I think most all of us want to improve our environmental awareness of
the planet and treat animals with respect but these characters go just
too far. Thanks again."
"Sounds like you folks really stirred up a hornets nest. I
wanted to say Good Job! I think you have done more to bring this
idiocy into public view in the past few days than any other action in
the past few years. Our sport has really taken it in the shorts for
some time now, but it sounds like things are starting to turn around. Events such as this are helping to
expose the truth about some of these groups.
"It's a shame so many people are fooled into thinking the
environmental movement is merely about cleaner air and national
parks."
As a reader of Off-Road.com, and more as a concerned citizen
of the environment, I commend you for your stance on the Lycos and
Envirolink situation.
Off roaders have been complacent far too long in the battle to
retain rights and freedoms for use of our lands. Thank you for
sustaining an environment where our common interests can be shared and
where fanatical "green" conspiracies can be exposed. I
praise your efforts and attitudes and thank you again.
"Well, I read your discussion about the Lycos / Envirolink
flap and I am now following the results with interest. First off
congrats on breaking a couple of spokes in the anti-off-road
juggernaut. The thing that many people are missing from all of the
hype of the fringe environmental groups is that these groups are
essentially propaganda machines, following the mis-guided belief that
the righteousness of their cause outweighs any concerns for the
truth.."
Have you ever noticed that extreme liberal folks scream loudly
about freedom of speech when they want to make their opinions heard,
but they do all they can to squash voicing of an opposite view.
I guess freedom of speech in their minds means you are free to any
opinion as long as it is theirs.
I think that was a wonderful thing that you did. I went
through that Envirolink server and was shocked to see what I saw.
About time someone in the media stand up and declare
environmentalists for what they are: human haters. I don't know if you
actually did play a role in getting Lycos to remove the garbage from
Envirolink, but I do appreciate your editorial on the subject. A lot
of people are dismally unaware of what these seemingly benign
organizations really stand for, and if your editorial and the HotWired
story about it educate just a few people, then I say you did a damned
fine job.
Way to go LYCOS, Way to go OFF-ROAD !!! If you ecologists who don't
know that woods are for all animals, including humans to recreate in,
there would be no problems between Eco-terrorists and recreational
users. There is plenty of land for all of us, but truthfully, I
believe Eco's want the land purely for THEIR use and none for us.
It really does restore my faith !
I am in South Africa and constantly reading environmental hogwash -
convinced that the world has gone mad when suddenly - a ray of light !
I really was beginning to think that the whole of America had been
brainwashed by political correctness and that we were some of the last
sane people on earth - nice to know we are not alone !
I would like to thank you for the recent wake up call sent to Lycos
which will reduce funding for The Envirolink Network. I run a E-mail
Alert network for Sportsmen and I will be send them the information on
what your publication has done for all outdoor minded people. Keep up
the good work and we support you and your publication for it's fine
job.
Congratulations and a resounding "hear-hear"! I just saw
my home page which includes news items from Wired, and one of the
headlines made me sit up and take notice. I followed the link to http://www.off-road.com/media/lycos_orig.html and found one of the greatest, most convincing arguments against the
current environmentalist movement. Apparently you have succeeded in
showing Lycos how hypocritical and self-destructive their
green-friendly policy really was. They have stopped their association
with these organizations. I was doubting it could be done. The fact
that these organizations are, not only criminal, but so obviously out
to destroy the very companies that are now so eagerly embracing them,
seemed self-evident to me. I almost concluded that businesses were
deaf to a voice of reason; that they would not see the obvious truth.
I was wrong. Maybe everyone can see the emperor has no clothes now.
Thank you.
I applaud your actions concerning Lycos and the ARA websites. I
found out about your letter to Lycos via the Stickbow and Bowsite. As
a hunter these people are offensive to me and my beliefs. It is good
to now there are other groups who try to show them in a true light,
besides the hunting community.
Say if libel is the truth then they must really be hurting. I have
a suggestion why don't all the outdoor user groups get together
possibly through the Blue Ribbon Coalition and sue the Eco-terrorists
groups for all the damage and suffering that they have caused ?
I appreciate off-road.com's efforts towards exposing the green
advocacy groups. More power to you.
I congratulate your organization for it's stance against Lycos
support of Envirolink. That was a great article and I'm sure it
took a lot of time and effort to put it together. A grateful
thanks from a fellow outdoorsman, 4WD fan, and Hunter.
You have done more than I could possibly thank you for.I'm headed
out to hit the hunting boards and ask for support for Lycos and off-road.com
Thank you for bringing to my attention the Lycos situation!
The article was truly shocking! I have been off roading for 15
years (CJ7, Blazer owner), and never aligned myself to aide the off
road cause, it's time I did! It's an irrational battle being
waged........... We bother no one, and destroy nothing.
I'm tired of being picked on, with closed roads, restrictions and
limitations.........
If the outrage against the radical fringe shown above does
not convince you that America, and in fact the world has lost it's tolerance for
these acts of hate and agression, perhaps this will. Mainstream environmental
groups have turned against them as well.
After publication of the Lycos / Envirolink story, Off-Road.Com
recieved a copy of this letter which was forwarded to the ALF, and is reprinted
here with permission. We will not comment further on it's contents, but leave it
up to you the reader to decide what this means for the environmental hate
groups.
Folks at ALF:
I read your page on Norm Lenhart with sheer amazement at the blatant
hypocrisy evident .
1) The Webster's Dictionary
defines "slander" as: "The utterance of false charges
and misrepresentations which defame or damage another's
reputation." Mr. Lenhart did nothing but tell the truth.
The evidence is all online! If you are going to goad your fanatic
members into harassing someone for telling the truth, at least get
your word choices correct!
2) What's with calling Mr.
Lenhart a "Rabid anti-environmentalist [?]" What the heck
are you talking about? The Lycos issue is not about environmentalism,
but is about the opinion of most rational folks that terrorism and law
breaking is NOT a justified means of "protest," nor a
reasonable method of making a statement about ANY issue. A corporation
like Lycos, by associating itself with these kinds of sites,
associated itself with the content of those sites.
Deny it all you want, cry
"free speech" until you are blue in the face. This does NOT
change the truth of the statement. They may as well have sent money to
the organizations like yours directly. They are supporting you in
either case. I am tired of folks like you thinking of the internet as
a way to put out your twisted views without repercussions.
3) You say that "he's been
accused of being an FBI agent," as if this were some horrible
crime. I happen to know several FBI agents. They are decent people,
whose main reason for joining the FBI was to protect the country from
people who wish to hurt it and its citizenry; people like you. So if
he is an FBI agent (I don't know him personally, myself), then I hope
he shuts you down!
4) Your closing statement that
"you in [no] way advocate harassment of them," followed by
an online smiley, is as transparent as you intended it to be. It is
also just as transparent to law enforcement officials and a court of
law. Good luck using that as a legal disclaimer! =)
Finally, I would like to state
that I and those I work with are environmentalists. We believe in
preserving and protecting the earth and its creatures. We love life
and champion it at every opportunity. Groups like yours have made
environmentalism into something twisted and evil. I wish deep in my
heart that nuts like you would just go away, and let sane and
reasonable folks work out the issue, legally and legitimately.
Unfortunately, there is no
reasoning with a fanatic. So instead, I find myself spending my time
countering the bad elements of the movement instead of helping the
reasonable ones. You are doing more damage to our image and objectives
than you could possibly imagine, and it saddens me constantly.
Nevertheless, I and those I work with will fight you with every
breath; and with the same vigor we once used to oppose those who
senselessly plundered and wrecked the earth.
Kristen Mitchell GreenWatch "Watching Over The World"
The distinction between the hate-filled emotional ranting
of the Envirolink supporters, and the articulate, rational dialogue of the
supporters of outdoor recreation is self evident. Yet it is the fanaticism of
the environmental movement that has resulted in millions of acres of our lands
being closed to all but the most healthy and physically fit amongst us. The
elderly, the handicapped, disabled veterans who gave their all and more, are now
denied access to the very land they worked and fought to keep free.
Because many amongst us are afraid to voice their concerns
thanks to our increasingly "politically correct" society; Because many
politicians "vote green" when those decisions are not based in
science, but out of fear of being branded "anti-environmentalists";
Because many in industry remain silent in fear of boycotts and lawsuits from the
environmental fringe, we are in the situation we are in. That situation is not
one that reflects the facts of science, tennets of a democracy, or a benefit to
the environment.
Off-Road.com was not the first group to fire a shot across
the bow of environmentalism gone awry, but that shot was the first in many years
to be heard. The time has now come for all of us to reclaim our land, our
rights, and our very dignity. We have shown that we, as a group can indeed make
a difference. We cannot let this opportunity go to waste.
"Real Environmentalism"
deals with "Helping the environment", "Enjoying the
environment", "Interacting with the environment", and
"Appreciating the environment". To be summarily "banned"
from our public lands because of legal action, pressure, threats, violence, and
"doomsday scenarios" based on emotionalism rather than sound science
is wrong. Doing so does nothing to help the environment"
