Reviewer's Notebook - 4-Wheelers Guide to the Rubicon Trail

ORC STAFF
The Rubicon Trail is the one trail that every Jeeper or 4x4 enthusiast must try at least once in their lifetime. A test: man and machine against the classic trail that was the birthplace for rock crawling and for years defined what the ultimate in rock crawling was all about.

In the last few years tougher trails have opened to challenge the most extreme men and their vehicles and those trails continue to fund many a parts house and credit card company, but for the shear pleasure to be found in the sport combined with incredible breath taking scenery the Rubicon Trail can't be beat. Like Moab, it remains a Mecca that all rock crawlers must make a pilgrimage to.

The best guide I have seen to the Rubicon Trail to date. You will need steady nerves, a smooth driving style and a good rig to take on the trail and no off-roader would consider starting the trail without their tools. Now there is something else you should not forget to take: The "4 Wheelers Guide to the Rubicon Trail" by William C. Teie, Published by Deer Valley Press.

This is by far the best guide I have ever seen published on the Rubicon Trail. It has 62 pages of information, history, maps and pictures in a glove-box sized spiral bound book. The author, William Teie, lives just down the hill from the Rubicon, less than an hour away in Rescue California and it is obvious that he has spent quite a bit of time on this trail carefully documenting every nook and cranny of it.

The guide includes information on:

  • Geology & history of the area and the trail
  • Preparing for the trip and what to take on the trail
  • Trail etiquette & safety
  • Forest service rules & regulations
And this guide has maps - lots of detailed maps, covering every foot of the trail from it's traditional start in Georgetown to it's exit near Lake Tahoe. It also has with trail notes covering every interesting part of the trail and every significant obstacle.

One big plus is that this guide is filled with pictures of obstacles on the trail, aerial photos and even 3D pictures of what you are likely to encounter on your trip (requires 3D glasses that they provide)!

I liked this book. If you are planning a trip to this shrine of 4 wheeling or just want to see what all of the fuss is about then I heartily recommend this guide.
