Once a Jeep owner decides it’s time to move up in size, the next move is deciding the size, wheels, lift requirements, and go to work on getting it all installed. The one catch comes when it’s time to fit the spare tire – if it’s a 33-inch tire or larger, chances are it’s not going to fit on the Wragnler’s stock tire carrier. This is when it’s time to upgrade to an aftermarket carrier that can accommodate larger tires.

Jeepers upgrading suspension and tires might also look at adding a high-clearance off-road bumper for improved obstacle clearance on the trail. Off-road-style bumpers not only offer better approach angles, but they too can help with clearance for oversized tires.

For TJ and JK owners needing to address these issues on their Wrangler, Bestop has released a new product that combines these two popular upgrades into one unit – the HighRock 4x4 Rear Bumper and Tire Carrier. This new bumper/tire carrier, which is constructed of 3/16-inch laser-cut steel, provides improved obstacle clearance while also accommodating an oversized spare tire.

One of the most important features of Bestop’s piece is the ability to still access the tailgate. The tire carrier mounts to the bumper via a heavy-duty spindle, and it turns via two large tapered roller bearings that are adjustable and greasable. What allows the unit to open and close with the tailgate is the MIG-welded steel bracket and included heim joints that connect the carrier to the tailgate. For fit and finish, bumper, carrier and brackets are all E-coated and finished with a black powder coat. It also comes with an LED light for the tire carrier.

When it comes down to the install, it’s a pretty straightforward process. You’ll need to remove the stock bumper, snip the stock tire carrier wires for the brake light, and then install the new bumper using the stock holes. For much of the install, some of the stock parts can be resused, so be sure to keep an eye on all of the nuts and bolts during removal/install. There’s very little guessing work for the install as well, since the included Bestop directions offer a pretty clear outline of each step in the process.
