Tom Woods Custom Jeep JK Drive Shafts - Review
By now, most Jeep JK owners have taken a peek under their rigs, only to find drive shafts that are totally unusable.
Waterproofing A Dana 44 Front Hub
The internal-spline Dana 44 front hub uses two tapered roller bearings, and a seal at the inboard end of the hub. At the outboard end of the hub is a drive-in cap that can allow water to enter, bringing grit along with it. Adding to the problem is the large volume of air in the hub.
Using CO2 For Your Locker
By a huge margin, the number one question I get asked when people see my Jeep for the first time is: ?what is that tank in the back?? The tank is, of course a compressed liquid CO2 tank. But it can be used for so much more than just filling your tires. Read on??
Reviewer's Notebook: Mountain Off-Road Enterprises Shackle Reversal + Buggy Leaf
When the new Jeep Wrangler TJ came out a whole lot of us with older Wrangler YJs developed a serious case of envy. Oh sure, the new 4.0 liter engine is nice, finally a serious rear end returned with the Dana 44 option, and many liked the return to round headlights.
Dave's Two Dollar Trackbar Disconnect System
The track bar (also called a panhard rod or bar) is used to control the lateral motion of an axle. In the case of the Jeep YJ (and many other vehicles) the track bar is beneficial on the street but on the trail it may limit articulation or even induce axle dislocation during extreme suspension travel.
True Trac Install
I had a good day at the swap meet yesterday, I bought a 3 series True Trac for a Dana 44 with reverse rotations 3.50 gears attached for $50. I need to change the gears because I'm going install it in a standard rotation front Dana 44.
Jeep Axle Swaps: Rear Dana 60
Some Jeep "heavy" 1/2 ton pickups used a semi-floating Dana 60 with a 5 on 5 1/2" wheel bolt pattern. The standard 1/2 ton pickups used a Dana 44 and the 3/4 ton pickups used a full floating Dana 60 with different wheel bolt pattern.
Jeep Axle Swaps: Front Dana 44
Scout and Wagoneer front Dana 44s are good canidates for swapping into a CJ, but shortening is required to maintain stock widths. These axles can also be put in uncut by moving the spring perches outside of the frame.
Swapping an Early Bronco Front Dana 44 into a YJ
There are many advantages to swapping an early Bronco Dana 44 into the front of a Wrangler YJ. The Dana 44 has larger u-joints, bigger ring and pinion, larger axle shafts (30 spline), beefy internal hubs, 5 on 5.5" wheel bolt pattern, and good pinion placement.

Sierra Trek '97, 31st Annual - Page 4
More loose rock and dusty conditions made Winch Hill #3 a little exciting. Half way up the climb, a large pillar of granite blocked the middle of the trail, causing me to make a three-point turn and just barely missing the mirror on my door. Closely behind winch hill #3 was "Squeeze Rock" where this slipping Willys CJ3B broke a rear axle. The Squeeze is a quick rocky climb up through a ten-foot high rock that seemed to have been blasted out enough to only allow a narrow CJ to pass with only inches of clearance on both sides.

Sierra Trek '97, 31st Annual
When the senior editors at Off-Road.com said they wanted me to cover the 31st annual Sierra Trek event, I was reluctant at first. Did I want to again go on a trail that had so savagely damaged my vehicle the year before? Did I really want to wake up at 3:00 A.M again to make it to the trailhead by 5:00 A.M.? As it turned out, the memories of last year's Trek were not fresh in my mind and the emotional pain of having so much body damage done to my newly painted Jeepster had gone. It also turned out that the weekend was free in my schedule, several of my friends were coming along, my wife gave her blessing and the new drivelines from San Jose Driveline Services were installed and ready to be tested.

Sierra Trek '97, 31st Annual - Page 2
So our day of trouble had begun. Not more than 20 minutes into the trail, on a flat section of no difficulty, I become the first breakdown of the day. My Jeepster gets a flat rear tire. This is the same tire that was sliced on the prior year's Sierra Trek event. How ironic that the same slice blows out a year later on the same trail. After taking 15 minutes to change the flat, we now find ourselves in the middle of the pack of the 65 vehicles.
Sierra Trek '97, 31st Annual - Page 3
The first real obstacle stood overwhelmingly in front of us at the trail's 6th mile. Winch Hill One consists of a very long uphill approach, which is spewed, with hundreds of 1 to 2-foot boulders for what seems to be 100 yards. The climb is so long, that three volunteer club members are used to guide you up one section at a time and then pass you on to the next spotter above. The top of the hill consists of a "V" shaped chute, which has a narrow two-foot ledge at the top. The combination of the "V" and the ledge gave the spectators at the hill a good show where nearly every rig got some kind of air time.

The Best Transmissions Conversions For Your Jeep
Over the years, Jeeps have come from the factory with some great transmissions and some terrible transmissions. In some cases a different transmission can be the best upgrade to your Jeep as far as performance and reliability. What transmission you select to put in your Jeep depends on what you find and what you have. We'll assume you are keeping your engine and transfer case and that you already have a manual transmission. Also, keep in mind these are my opinions of what will be the cheapest and easiest swap for most people. I haven't done most of these swaps either, a lot of my information came from people on-line and from books (YMMV).
Swapping T-18 into your Jeep
The T-18 is such a popular swap for Jeeps because, in many cases, it can be installed for less money than any other heavy duty granny low transmission. The reason for this is the input bearing retainer size and input shaft length are right for '76-'86 CJs for the Ford and Jeep version.
Jeep Transfer Case: NP207
The NP207 has a aluminum case and an appearance similar to the NP231. It should have a tag on the back saying New Process Gear, Model 207. This chain driven transfer case uses a 21 spline input with the manual transmissions and a 23 spline input with the automatic transmissions. The output for the front driveshaft is on the drivers side. Low range is 2.61 and high is 1.00. This transfer case is widely scorned. If yours should break, look for a 21 spline NP231 or swap transmission and transfer case at the same time. The transfer case is upsidedown in the picture showing the input (it is drivers drop.)
