A Remarkable Life

They could make a movie about the incredible life of rock crawler Chris Ridgway. They're probably going to.
Aug 1, 2008

Ever since he was born, Chris Ridgway has lived a colorful life. Like a made-for-TV movie, his past is full of breathtaking highs and devastating lows. When he was only a few years old, the now 37-year-old was kidnapped by his father and taken from California across the country to Virginia. This was in an era when custody in a divorce case was almost always automatically given to the mother, but the senior Ridgway had different ideas and did what he felt was best for his son. Perhaps that event set the tone for the rest of Chris Ridgway's existence, because it hasn't become any more ordinary since then. In fact, Tae Lee of Weko Films has taken notice of Ridgway's remarkable life and has been filming a documentary on him for the past four years. What is it that makes Ridgway so intriguing?

XRRA ROUND 2 MAY 3, 2008 ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO
Jul 1, 2008

While the Xtreme Rock Racing Association (XRRA) Western Division season opener in Moab, Utah provided plenty of racing action, it was not without a few miscues along the way. The technical course produced gobs of carnage, which led to multiple DNFs and interrupted the action.

Brad and Roger Lovell's New Fabtech Ranger is a True Dual-Sport Machine
Jun 1, 2008

While brothers Brad and Roger Lovell are no strangers to the winner's circle, Brad Lovell's wins at the 2008 Maxxis Xtreme Rock Racing (XRRA) season-opener in Moab, Utah, and the W.E.Rock season-opener in Perris, California, stand out from victories for a couple of reasons–not the least of which is this beautiful and efficient little Ford Ranger rock crawler, designed to excel in both rock crawling and rock racing.

W.E.Rock Tries to Change the Face of Rock Crawling
Jun 1, 2008

After years of sanctioning-body rivalries and arbitrary rules changes, rock crawling is trying to change its "flying by the seat of its pants" image. Spearheading this effort are W.E.Rock's Dustin Webster and Lil' Rich Klein. The endeavor has being going on behind the scenes for months, but it was out in the open for all to see at tech inspection for W.E.Rock's season opener in Perris, California. The record number of entries suggested that the teams respect W.E.Rock's efforts. All 55 vehicles in the competition were weighed at each corner and subjected to a rigorous examination by head marshal Lil' Rich Klein, complete with the rubber glove. "Fuel containment seems to be the biggest issue," Klein commented. "All infractions have been noted and must be fixed by the second event."

How XRRA's Moab Season Opener Was Nice 'N' Nasty

X treme Rock Racing Association's (XRRA) head honcho Mike Weaver is no dummy. When he launched his rock racing series four years ago, the first event of the season was held in conjunction with the Easter Jeep Safari (EJS) in Moab, Utah.

A Rock-Crawling Revolution

In competitive rock crawling, Unlimited has always been considered the premiere class. No matter the sanctioning body producing the event, be it W.E.Rock, Pro Rock, or the reinvented UROC, Unlimited was where you found the sport's superstars, like Fabtech's Tracy Jordan, Twisted Customs' Jason Paule, and 2005 Dirt Sports' Driver of the Year and Monster Energy Drink's Shannon Campbell. As competitive rock crawling celebrates its 10th birthday, however, Unlimited is being taken over by its little brother: the Pro Modified class.

Advances in technology spurred by competitive rock crawling have allowed obstacles to be conquered that would have been considered impossible just a few short years ago. Is the technology the only thing that has advanced? We have often wondered how the average member of the Off-Road Nation would fair in competition behind the wheel of a moon buggy, or conversely, how well someone like Shannon Campbell or Tracy Jordan would do on the trail without a row of cones and a headset-wearing spotter to guide the way.
