Holladays in Hell - Days of Stunts,
Steve Holladay

Nov 1, 2005

You have seen Steve Holladay working, although you probably did not know it at the time. Sure, sure, he won the '68 Mexican 1000, one of Ed Perleman's NORRA TJ-to-La Paz extravaganzas. But you did not see him - even if you were actually there. He took over from the legendary Whitey Martino, far from the lights of the border and starting line hoorah, way down the peninsula at El Arco and won it all.

The Larkie 'O Show

Nov 1, 2005

Just riding the Baja 1000 sounds extremely serious to most riders. But riding for thirty-eight hours . . . on an ancient vertical twin? That sounds particularly grueling to almost any rider you might ask. But the prospect sounded pretty damn bueno to Larkin Wight. In commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Ensenada-to-La Paz race, the 34-year old Lucerne Valley (CA) Checker MC member assembled a 1967 650 Triumph - a traditional desert sled. And the test driver (he helped develop the LTV Hummer, driving it to Baltimore on the first leg of its round-the-world test run) rode it all the way to La Paz. Solo. Like, by himself. In 38 hours. With no formal pit pits and no chase crew.

US OPEN of SUPERCROSS

Oct 10, 2002

Las Vegas. The perfect venue for the first ever US OPEN of SUPERCROSS. Bright lights .... glamour .... action .... 24 hours a day. (Note: Blah blah blah .... ) It's quite a show. And that's what sets the US OPEN of SUPERCROSS apart from any other supercross. It's also tremendous show! Music, lasers, disco balls, .... and more. Two days of racing. The largest purse EVER in the history of the sport ($250,000). $100,000 to the winner. And Team Kawasaki's Damon Huffman becomes the first ever winner of the US OPEN of SUPERCROSS!

"TONY'S "E-TICKET" RIDE

Nov 1, 1999

At the recent SCORE Tecate Baja 1000, I rode with Protruck racer, Steve Scaroni. I hitched up with the Imperial Valley vegpacker to get a feel for the quality of the Protruck series in support of an in-depth status report on the growing class. My assigned race vehicle duties included acting as the right seat navigator, the obstacle warn-er, an intercom-er, a calming influence (!) on the driver, a race radio-er (including to our own Pierce Aviation aircraft!), the look-out at our "six o?clock," a (potential) mechanic, a lighting controller, and the engine health display monitorer ... you know -- P(oil), T(oil), T(transmission).
