It's really amazing what the vision of one man can accomplish. It
can set a new record for attendance at the Petersen Automotive
Museum in Hollywood CA. It can bring together the fans and legends
of the sport, on a scale previously unequaled. It can bring a level
of mainstream "legitimacy" to what many have long considered a
niche market. And perhaps most importantly, it can pay a long
overdue tribute to one of the greatest races that has ever been.
The "Baja 1000".

On Janurary 15'th, "The Checkers" - off-road racing's premiere
team, presented Off-Road.com with "The Vic VanElla Award". The
award is given to those the team believes has done the most to
benefit the sport of off-road racing. It is the highest honor the
Checkers can bestow upon a non-member.

Talk to any desert rat and ask "Who was the greatest desert racer
of all time?" After some in-depth soul searching, fondly relived
memories, and another long pull on his beer, you'll likely get the
following response....

On August 15'th, the men & women of the SNORE desert series drove north to the rugged mountains surrounding Ely Nevada for a different kind of "desert racing" The SNORE / NAPA 250. At nearly 7000 feet, the old mining turned tourist town of Ely is a far cry from the bright lights & barren landscape of the Las Vegas area. The millenia old Bristlecone pines, mountainous terrain & small town atmosphere stand in stark contrast to the rock gardens, cactus, and casinos which are part & parcel of the "typical" Nevada desert racing experience.

Once upon a time, a wise person said, "Casey, some day you're going
to be the next Walt Lott". After his successful completion of the
"Nevada 2000", the longest off-road race to ever take place on
American soil, it would be hard to disagree. Yet the success of
Casey Folks and the BITD (Best In The Desert) racing organization
is far more than the N2K. It lies in a desert racing series that
has seen steady growth over the years, drawing racers from around
the world. It lies in the American racers that have seen a
competitive alternative to the Baja / SCORE races, and it lies in a
dedicated, largely volunteer force that hits the ground running,
and makes the dream come alive.

There was a lot of speculation leading up to the Nevada 2000 on who would overall the 4 wheeled classes. With Ivan Stewart paired up with Larry Roseler, and Larry Ragland hot off a win at the Baja 500, the arguments on the internet went back and forth. Ivan- Larry, Larry - Ivan. Most people were convinced that it would be a Chevy-Toyota fight to the finish. Apparently they had forgotten about one "little detail".

There's little doubt among fans of off-road desert racing, that it's the most exciting motorsport on the planet - bar none. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most "spectator UN-friendly". Generally speaking, standing in the middle of the Mojave / Baja desert being pelted with rocks in 110 deg heat for the chance to see one truck, bike, or buggy every few minuets, isn't exactly as comfortable as a trackside seat at NASCAR. It's an even farther cry from swillin' back some suds on the couch with your buds come raceday.

SCORE kicked off the 1999 season in grand style with the 5th running of the "Laughlin Desert Challenge", a race that has become "the" premiere event in American desert racing. The bright lights, big casinos, grandstand seating and semi-short course (11 mile) format combine to provide racers and fans alike with one of the most unique experiences to be found in the realm of motorsports.
