Project Elf Part III

Unless it's an A-arm car, just about every Volkswagen-based off-road car uses a variation of the front suspension on our Project Elf. It's a textbook example of 1930s suspension design that employs a system of kingpins and link pins to articulate; hence, the king-and-link name. The system proved so reliable that Volkswagen maintained the basic system from the Beetle's birth until 1966, when it updated the design to use ball joints. While it's no high water mark for geometry, it's robust in stock form and responds well to appropriate modifications.
